Hikitate geiko is a way of practicing that higher ranking members of the dojo should become familiar with.
The literal translation of hikitate is to “pull up” or “pull up to stand.” Figuratively, it has a lot of meanings, but one of the most pertinent to kendo is to encourage someone or raise their spirit.

I'm reading a research article on Setsuninto and Katsujinken and trying to understand the philosophy behind them and here you are talking about Katsujinken. I was meant to come here and watch this video ;-D Thank you so much for all the content you make Mr. Shin.

Before the advent of modern attitudes to martial arts as a means of self-improvement, there was a harsher/more martial definition of katsujinken. That is, by killing one person, being able to save the lives of many. Not really the kind of philosophy one can promote in modern times, but a part of the history of the concept of katsujinken, nonetheless.

This is such a wonderful video, and I feel like all the advice you give can be applied to any Sempai - Kohai relationship, irrespective of whether the context is Kendo or something else.

Thank you so much for posting this. Being the highest ranking person for a large number of miles in any direction and still only being a San Dan, I have fallen into a pattern of talking too much and I think it has affected our membership numbers. I will think on this lesson hard and rewatch the video. Thank you again, I greatly appreciate your videos.

I can see that a senior at the club I attend struggles with this, he doesn't want to talk so much, but has to explain things to us beginners. In those first few months, when he spoke less the results were quite comedic (we made a mess of things). Still when he got us into kata again and again and again speaking gradually became less necessary.
