In a thrilling race, world record holder Kenenisa Bekele beats his renowned competitors at Weltklasse Zürich 2006 at 5000m with an incredibly fast final lap - 53.03 seconds.

Finally another video of the phenomenon Kenenisa Bekele. As one German commentator once remarked, when Kenny is fit, anyone hoping for gold can only be disappointed.

Songok gave Bekele in his prime a really good run. He chased him at the World Cross Country short race (4 km) earlier that year too, but Bekele knew he would win. This was Songok's fastest race of his career. What a great race.

Yes, Eliud seemed to have lost a lot of the finishing speed that he'd used to defeat Bekele and El G just 3 years earlier.

After doing a bit of research this is what I've found: Fastest 5000m with a sub-58 last lap: 57.78 - Kenenisa Bekele 12:37.35 (2004) Fastest 5000m with a sub-57 last lap: 56.77 - Haile Gebrselassie 12:39.36 (1998) Fastest 5000m with a sub-56 last lap: 55.4 - Haile Gebrselassie 12:41.86 (1997) Fastest 5000m with a sub-55 last lap: 54.66 - Dejen Gebremeskel 12:46.81 (2012) Fastest 5000m with a sub-54 last lap: 53.03 - Kenenisa Bekele 12:48.25 (2006) (This race) Fastest 5000m with a sub-52 last lap: 51.94 - Bernard Lagat 12:59.22 (2006) Does anyone know what the fastest 5000m with a sub-53 last lap is? Man do I want to see more of the Golden Leauge races from the 2006 season. Bekele was in a league of his own that season.

His Golden Leauge streak and times that year were simply unreal: Oslo 2nd - 12:58.22 Paris 1st - 12:51.32 Rome 1st - 12:51.44 Zürich 1st - 12:48.25 (with a MONSTROUS final lap of 53.03) Bruxelles 1st - 12:48.09 Berlin 1st - 12:57.74

if you noticed. Bekele decreased his speed to save energy for the last lap .kipchoge could not do a sprint because the race was too fast.

it's amazing to think how fast he could have gone in this race. Such inconsistent laps must have taken a lot out of them and it ended up still being a fast time. 68s followed by a 67s then an amazing last lap of 53 (which he only started to kick at 350m). If he had just done the last 3 laps at 60s which i'm sure was quite doable he would have been at 12:40

I believe Mo has gone 51 when dipping under 1250. But not certain Oddly enough Mo and Hicham have some of the fastest closers than anyone in history. No surprise with Hicham!

@@rgdos1162 Not really, being perfectly honest. Mo has impressive top speed and a strong finishing kick, I'll give him that. But his habit of running miserably slow times followed by a lightning fast kick just didn't make for interesting races. His actual "fast" races were fairly sparse, in comparison to athletes like Hicham as you mentioned.

@@rgdos1162 Bernard Lagat beat Bekele in 2008 I believe with a 50.08 last 400 and may have run sub 50 if he wasn't blocked by lapped runners he slowed down for. For Lagat, that was his PR, and he ran JUST under 13 minutes, but with a 50 second last lap, it was evident that he could have run faster. It was his first 5k I think, or second. Needless to say, that's the fastest last lap I've seen in a 5k. I'd say 13 minutes is still a fast time

@@robinbauer1975 yeah that is crazy! He ran them within 9 days of eachother! Not to mention he won the double world cross country championships that year. There was also the 2004 Olympics in Athens as well. It was a very busy season. On the other hand Cheptegei had no important championships in 2020 because the pandemic shut down everything. Tokyo olympics was postponed as well. That gave him plenty of time to train. And new technology helps too. But yeah I can't find Bekeles 26:20 anywhere
