Ken Shelley won the bronze medal in pairs at this competition with his partner Jojo Starbuck, but he also competed in the men's event placing 9th in figures and 5th in the free skating for an overall 8th place. You could argue that he deserved to place much higher in the free when you consider that John Misha Petkevich and Patrick Pera, who placed ahead of him in the free skate, both made errors. Also ahead was Jan Hoffmann who was only 15 at the time. Shelley was only 19 himself but despite a heavy competition schedule of pairs short, pairs long and two days of compulsory figures before this day he skated brilliantly; completely captivating the French crowd who made their displeasure at his marks very clear!
The commentator here is the brilliant Dr Eva Pawlik, 1948 Olympic silver medallist and 1949 European champion who became the first female skater to become a TV commentator.
