If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

Hi, thanks for the review. I have to admit I just streamed it quickly and I was not really impressed by his singing…. But after your video, I listened to it more carefully and this is indeed a very nice record, even on the web it sounds nice. I’ll grab it soon in vinyl…

I really enjoyed this album, maybe because I had known the expectations about Kenny’s singing, excellent release from New Land! I agree, it needs to be played more to appreciate. Thanks for the video!

I don't think it's important whether Kenny Dorham has perfect intonation. Everybody knows that he is not a jazz singer. However, he is a trumpet virtuoso with an exceptional grasp of the bebop language, better than many jazz singers. It's crucial to witness how a master jazz instrumentalist hears and vocalizes the melodies of the Standards in his mind. This approach is distinct from that of a typical jazz singer, making it truly unique.

I was about to say - a lot of people dislike Chet Baker's voice as well. I really don't mind this, and I think some of why it's jarring is because he didn't really do other recorded singing releases (that I'm aware of at least). Is his voice perfect? No. But honestly, part of the charm of Jazz is that it doesn't have to be. The entire album feels very intimate to me, like just a friend singing at home while hanging out - imperfections and all.

Thx for the video! When you play recent releases like this one do you use your mono or stereo cartridge? Curious since I presume this was cut with a stereo cutting head by Kevin gray

Yes so firstly that’s accurate. Kevin Gray would have used a stereo cutting head, although he has stated that this method doesn’t make it any less mono. Now as far as my playback, I used the stereo cart because of that stereo cutting lathe and then summed it with the mono switch (I listened to it toggling back and forth, with the primary difference being changes in gain). Also for what it’s worth, my understanding is that almost every mono record from at least the late 60s onward was cut on a stereo lathe so the benefits of a mono cart these days would really be mid 50s to late 60s pressings (not to be confused with year it was originally released!)

How is about pressing quality? Have a non-fill issue with Newland's Howard McGhee release (even on the replacement copy) thougl Pallas pressed. Cheers Klaus

@@robbiedetroitstigermanviny8883 MMJ had a licence to reissue 2,000 or 3,000 copies, most are long sold out, the last batch was released in 2019. The 2x45 series stuff that is left just didn't sell out, if it's still available.

I guess some labels have too much money to spend when they can afford to reissue a title like this. Dorham is without question one of the great trumpetplayers in jazz but (ironically) this title blows and not in a good way. I'm not a big fan of vocal jazz in general but can perfectly see why people like Chet Baker for instance and I certainly recognize the quality of his singing. Dorham here sounds very unpleasant to my ears and I can't imagine many people will like this.
