During the session for ‘Don’t Pass Me By’, The Beatles were interviewed in the studio by the presenter of BBC radio’s weekly The Kenny Everett Show.
The recording begins with just Everett and Lennon, explaining that two incomplete songs had so far been recorded for The Beatles’ next album, one of which, Starr’s first composition, had been written “in a fit of lethargy”. Asked to pick a record to be played, Lennon chooses Harry Nilsson’s version of River Deep, Mountain High, which leads into a parody of Leadbelly’s Cottonfields.
Everett, clearly concerned that the interview so far is yet to yield much usable material, asks whether the success of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band had set the bar too high for future recordings. “It only got high ’cause everybody said how high it was,” Lennon replies. “It’s no higher than it was when we made it.”
Paul McCartney then joins the interview, and they improvise a jingle for Everett’s show, after which George Harrison and Ringo Starr also enter the studio. Starr records another jingle, followed by McCartney’s lounge singer versions of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Christmas Time (Is Here Again)’.
Following a playback break, producer Tony Olivestone takes the microphone and describes the scene in the studio as The Beatles play a variety of instruments in the background.
The interview was broadcast on BBC Radio 1 on Sunday 9 June between 10am and midday. It was later pressed as a 7″ vinyl disc by Apple for promotional use in Italy, as Una Sensazionale Intervista Dei Beatles.

John is hilarious witty. It sounds like he just discovered the slide. I get the feeling the Beatles was one part circus, one part mental institution and that these particular 4 guys and a producer that were uniquely suited for stardom and each other. The world would have been so much poorer for it had they never existed as they did. How many artists did they inspire? Countless and the pleasures have been endless. Thanks for posting this.

on vinyl i have the david wigg interviews called "the beatles tapes." very insightful. a two record set with each side dedicated to one beatle. lennon even foresees his own assassination, in a way. he says, to effect - i act like a clown because if someone takes you too seriously they might shoot you.

Creativity overflowing. No time to stop and sort it out with a visiting journalist, regardless of whether he’s BBC-which in 1968 GB was ALL airwaves media. Any other rock/pop band interviewed by BBC that day would have dropped everything for the interview. Ppl today who didn’t witness it cannot grasp how the Beatles captured the music world’s imagination. Their followers were in every market of the entire world. Vlad PUTIN turned out in Moscow 18 yrs ago for a McCartney tour concert. They were unique and their story is unique.

Have you finished any songs? No, we’re halfway through the next incomplete song! Hilarious example of Lennon’s witty humor!

Apparently they were completely fed up with each other but during the interview got to their old goofy form then right when the interviewer left they went back to their grumpy selves.

Ummm…apparently…they were not completely fed up with each other. What came next were White Album, Get Back/Rooftop, and Abbey Road….oh and grumpy little tunes like, apparently, Hey Jude, Let It Be …. What a strange (completely fed up) comment, apparently.

Interesting comments on Sgt pepper from John. I could understand why he wouldn’t listen to it after making it, you’d be sick of it by then, must’ve been an arduous task. Most over rated album ever too imo, and possibly Johns too. I’ve heard he called it Paul’s album in derogatory terms.

musicians don't listen to their own music like actors don't watch their own movies. like you said, they spend so much time on these projects its work to them. its a job. all we hear and see is the result of that job.

I’m not sure if you have any idea of how Lennon used to approach some of his songwriting? It may seem like gibberish to you but it’s really not that simple.
