This Week I'm taking you north into the Paul Bunyan Starte Forest. It was a great weekend. On Friday I was stressing about finding a camping spot. The forests have been so full of campers this year. I have been having a harder time than usual finding empty sites, especially along rivers and lakes. I called by friend Jack during my lunch break on Friday. He suggested heading up to Paul Bunyan State Forest and parking in a wooded pull-off. Thats exactly what I did in last week's video, and it would definitely work out, however Jack suggested taking the e bike up to a beautiful vista where a fire tower once stood. I decided to locate a few potential spots before heading up there. I was so happy I made the drive. I found 3 spots in total; the first one had signs saying no camping. That didn't make it into the video. The second spot had potential I may have to check that out some weekend. The 3rd was an absolute beauty!
Saturday was a wash. It rained most of the day. It wasn't a hard rain, just an annoying mist. I'd hear claps of thunder every once in a while, but it never turned into a soaking rain. The humidity and dew points were crazy high. The air felt so thick you could chew on it. Saturday night I wasn't feeling like eating. I was tired, wet and spent the majority of the day sweating. Thats when the true potential of the truck camper shines. I turned on the air conditioner, took a shower and spent the last few hours of the day watching KZfaq. Don't get me wrong, Saturday was still an awesome day camping on the lake. I attempted to catch some fish. I cleaned up the campsite and rebuilt the fire pit. Toby and I went on a few walks, and I really got to see the beauty of Northern Minnesota.
I hope next week I can come across another campsite just like this one. Thanks for coming along on the weeks adventure.

Wild roses/primroses not sure what they are but so soothing to my soul. Baby bird in the nest? Life affirming in these dark days. Peaceful, calming lake shots. One day we will see you catch a whopper, hang in there! And as usual, you being a decent human and making every spot you stay a better place. Been awhile since you have said “It doesn’t get any better than this.” Good to hear. Entranced by the red glass lantern, and want to help you buy more. It's been hanging out on the kitchen table with me and the girls for some time. I would look at it while editing and say.....tomorrow I HAVE to bring it into work and mail it out. I'm glad it finally made its way to you. I hope you were able to check out Jack's videos of that island. Between his videos and mine you will get a good look at the remote area in which it was found. Up on the very top left of the photo are the GPS coordinates of the lake. You can zoom in on Google Maps to find the island. I'm such a dork when it comes to old stuff and the stories behind them. I spent years camping at that spot, Its an old army corps of engineer campsite. You get some traffic, and the sheriff will check on you. Thank you for taking care of my favorite spot back home. They allow you to occupy one of those sites for up to 14 days straight before you have to move.

@Kenny There is 3 Good sites down there. The first one you visited we called Bowtie because of the shape of the lake. Nice site, can be a fair bit buggy at night. There is another one on the main road heading towards the Camp Ground that is a drive through site with a hill, We called that one Horseshoe. Nice site for tent but hard to get a good spot for a truck camper. The one your at in the video everyone calls McGregor. There is fish in the lake, just mostly at the other side of the lake where it gets deeper. Out there, there are some other campsites but they are down ATV trails and not really excess-able to those with a camper. Also, the gun shots you heard probably was people shooting down at the gravel pit.

Corps of Engineers knows how to build em. Camped with the Corps all over the place until I can't do it anymore. Great places to camp.

Thank you very much. I got lucky with him. His breeds balance him out so well. He's got the confident strut and beautiful eyes of the pit bull. The staffy in him wants nothing more in life than to make me happy and be right by my side. The bull dog in him makes sure he takes a lot of naps throughout the day. I remember in the beginning, so many people said, "Enjoy his naps now, he's gonna outgrow it and be a handfull" but his favorite thing in life is to cuddle up and snore while laying his head in my lap. His training has been going really well. He really wants nothing more in life than to make me happy. Could you imagine if people could love like dogs! The world would be a lot different! My favorite time of the day is walking in the door when I get off work to find Toby waiting to cuddle on my lap.

Dang, what a great spot! I am a disabled senior who had planned on doing what you do, San's the camera, in my old 1970 VW bus. But life and the pandemic got in the way I no longer have my beloved quaint gypsy wagon, but I get to camp out vicariously through you. Bless you for all you do! 😊

Tuesday is my regular day to watch my three and five-year-old granddaughters all day while their parents are at work. They are fantastic little girls, but It certainly is nice to be able to come home and decompress on a vicarious camping trip with Toby and Kenny. Thanks again guys!

I am 62. Alone but absolutely not lonely. I live in my own head and am happy with who and where I am. I go to work every day, give 100%, and come home to my dogs and peace and quiet. I am a Corrections Officer at a Max Security facility. Stressful at the best of times.

I could not do that job! I was a CO with the county. Being in a Super Max would be a completely different level. It's the experiences I've had in life that keep me looking for solitude as well. Be safe!

@@KennyOfAllTrades I am in Illinois. Menard is trending towards Supermax status. Tamms Supermax closed years ago and now the State is shutting Stateville Max down and sending them to us (Menard CC). We have a closed cellhouse remodeled and ready to reopen. But we have no staff to man it. IDOC pays extremely well and we are AFSCME Union facilities. If you are interested in a well paying, Union career, I would recommend applying to the Illinois Department of Corrections, specifically Menard CC. I CANNOT AND DO NOT SPEAK FOR IDOC OR MENARD CC. MY STATEMENTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL OPINIONS.

We take our camper to the family lake compound ( Pokegama Lake;) in Pine City every summer; just love MN ( his wife (me) is a NM native. We marathon watch your videos, especially with Toby now!! Your fishing is becoming great entertainment for me. You find the secret fishing spots that I usually find. So secret, even the fish dont know where it is. 😅 My wife thinks your secret ingredient for breakfast is beef jerky. And that you are making chipped beef for breakfast. Just got home from finally going on a "camping trip" for the first time in years because of health. We got a little cabin in the woods. But we also bought a pop up last weekend, and are going to be using it a ton this summer. You motivate me to get out in the woods. I love your videos, and as always, great job man. I lived in Minnesota many years and went to these places I see in your videos with my camper “Tilly.” For the life of me, I can’t remember a lot of specifics of the places, memories have faded into a general impression and feeling and love of the parks and wilderness, but some experiences remember like yesterday. I wish back then it would have occurred to me to videotape a lot of these experiences however, times and technology were different back then. You have a great opportunity to document all of your fun times and have a lot of good videos to look back on. What amazed me about Minnesota is how lush and green and thick everything was after the bleakness of winter, though I enjoyed activities as well. The places with the fondest memories I have was lake Vermilion.

Kenny, that was a beautiful campsite. That close to a beautiful lake is amazing! I'm surprised the leeches didn't produce some fish for you. The Blue Fox #2 that I sent you not only catches Trout but all & any panfish. Last Fall I caught the largest Crappie of my life on one. They definitely work when nothing else does. I've seen where you have getting plenty of rain. Until three hrs ago we have been the opposite. Dry for the last three week with temps. in the high ninety's, the lawns have dried up. As always, Thanks for bringing us along.

Thanks Rich! I appreciate the help and support! I'm thinking about hitting a trout lake this weekend. The trail I is always a mess... but it's super sandy and should drain out. I'm hoping it is not holding a ton of water. It's about a 4 mile rutted path off the main forest trail. If I can make it to the lake, I'll try that lure. If it's not raining, I'll get the kayak out. I should call in sick Monday and smoke a few trout sunday over the campfire. That would be a cool video....unfortunately, I'm not the type of guy who calls in sick. Lol Thanks again for the donation. Love the PB, my go to to get away from this crazy world. Yes it does get ATV traffic including me, but I am more the 10mph kind of guy. Most ATV'er are decent but you get a few speed freaks. If you travel those roads enough you will notice memorials along side the roads for the ones that learned the hard way, speed kills. Love the tobe

Love the way the trees ring the lake. What a beautiful scene. Patience is a virtue. Rain may have something to do with it. That lantern is a pretty find. Check for spiders b4 using outhouses. That lantern may not smoke up the way cheap ones do. Nothing like a good campfire to relax by. That truck that turned around may have been Corps related. Rangers often check on campers for safety. Nice feature of those campgrounds.

Kenny…great video but have one suggestion! As a avid cyclist and Mtn Biker…I ride many trails such as the ones you do…consider wearing a bike helmet! Trees…mud….gravel….ATV traffic….just a good idea! Take care!!

Kenny, those lakes most likely have plenty of fish in them, it is all about Location, just like real estate, Location, location, location; It is true what they say & I know from experience, that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water. The hardest part of fishing is finding the fish! There was just probably no fish in the section of the lake you were fishing. Anyway, Great video, enjoy watching them every week and look forward to them, Keep them coming! Absolutely Love when you bring Toby the dog with -Such a cool dog!

That is a beautiful pond ! More wild roses and a wild iris .. so much to see ! Your antique lantern with the red glass are hard to come by nice find . Even though it rained it was very peaceful seeing the raindrops falling into that pond . Loon calls and a swan thanks for taking me camping tonight . Hope you and your family are out of harms way because of that dam break and flooding because of all the rain !

Yes, then rains up here is causing a lot of flooding down south. It's looking bad in that part of the state. The Mississippi has not gone above flood stage here yet.

Thank you very much! I really enjoyed editing this one. Sometimes, I don't like watching my videos. I see it over 100 times before it's finally done. By the end of the edit, I hate the sound of my voice, the things I talk about, and the way I look. But I didn't hate this video.... that probably sounds weird...

@@KennyOfAllTrades Not weird at all. In my mind it’s called craftsmanship. You want your product to have the best content, shots, sounds, choreography, etc. You’re honing your craft. A photographer takes thousands of photos to finds the perfect elements. Musicians- thousands of hours of practice for a few minutes of excellence. You spend all this time working on something because you are passionate about it. Make no mistake; you’re an artist & a craftsman. KOAT channel has grown leaps & bounds since I started watching….which has been almost since the beginning.

I remember going camping with a friend down in Los Padres forest. We had our trucks parked off of a spur of the main forest road, a well used campsite. Being wakened up at 2 AM by a group of four cars. Hunters. Pulling in and setting up regardless of the fact we were already there. Remote is better.

I also picked up a antique lantern for $20. Mister went to a Amish store to replace a part. Then repainted. Works great. Wish I could share a picture.
