I do both photo and video and since the fx30 is $700 cheaper, and has a lot newer technology, it’s clearly the better camera. Even for photo

I do think it's worth mentioning that A7IV is notorious for over heating because it's not really built for only being a video camera. The FX30 has a built in cooling system to handle hotter conditions for larger format. Which is a fairly decent problem if you like filming for festivals or concerts in high picture profiles

The Fx30 has an amazing auto focus and color science. For video I’ll choose the FX30 and for photos the A74😊

Great video! Indeed The A7IV has a nicer and sharper image across the board! I had a lot of doubts, but not anymore I'm definitely going for the A7IV in 2023. I know that this one also takes better pictures, so I'm also going to go for the more expensive full frame lenses! I don't know if this camera still overheats, but the image quality has convinced me!

I do only video. The FX30 is my first pro camera; I love it! I film mostly outdoors and on the run. The AF is smooth and quick.

To me the sensors make the difference. I can rarely control the lighting conditions with my work. Apsc just falls apart quickly when on low light conditions.

I bought the Fx30 and I regretted it, I couldn't sell it because it was difficult to sell second hand in Turkey. I was angry at myself, thinking I had made a mistake. I came across this video. Thanks for the comparison, FX30 definitely gives a more cinematic image, even in photo shoots. Additionally, having an APSC sensor as the second camera gives the opportunity to use different depths of field at the same focal length. "There is no mistake"

I do notice that the A7IV has a softer highlight roll off, however 3 things. 1) If you use 125 ISO (lower ISOs) instead of SLOG3 800 ISO, 4K 120 in the FX30 is actually very clean. 2) FX30 has 240fps HD which is awesome shooting action and wildlife. 3) in action sequences and wild life I struggled to notice the crop difference between 60fps and 120fps 4k / 240fps HD because I was always trying to get the tightest shoot with the zoom anyways. BTW you do have 120 HD in the the FX30 without crop. In a 4K timeline you won't notice the difference

I wish Sony moves all Alpha lineup to FX3/30 body design. I hate the power button on FX series, mode button. Other than that love it. I dig the dark grey and black combo plus squarish aesthetics. At the same time I love the viewfinder, screen and dials on my A7R5. If I were in market as a video shooter I would pickup FX30 over A7IV just for 120fps.

Just bought A7M4. Superior to FX30 no doubt, big sensor helps a lot. But yeah, it overheats occasionally. In last shoot, in 2 hours shoot, 2 times I had to use my cars AC in full blast mode for 4-5 minutes to calm it down.

Nice comparison and video, thanks for sharing! For me the decision is clear. I am a current user of the great A73 and if I upgrade, it would be an A74 (if I do it now) or a future A75. Its an amazing all rounder camera. I would only consider the FX line if I do more video works. But for a dedicated video shooter I can see the appeal of the FX line. But I would still think that if you are a "one" camera person, doing both equally, the A7 line would still be better!

I upgraded from the a6500 and have a bunch of apsc lenses so I got the fx30 . I’m a videographer and never took a picture with my a6500 and never will with the fx30

your sharpness test has different points of focus in the two cameras, the comparative is not fair. The FX30 Autophoc is faster, the a7VI is intermittent. FX30 is a range of films, A7IV is a hybrid range. . like comparing. .? thanks

This was me recently, and I ended up getting the A7IV on Xmas eve. No regrets and super glad I did, not to mention all the instant rebates and discounts I got, thank you Jesus! Honestly for me, the better low light performance and DOF is just more superior with an FF. That was the selling points for me, all the other features are a bonus. ✊

I use my a7iv paired with sigma 18-35 1.8 for 4k60 so i have similar result with 28-75 2.8 tamron full frame , but i have to say in low light I can keep the sigma and dont push too much the iso ,yes it a heavy lens , I hope sigma delivers a native lens and lighter for apsc.

Pretty good video and comparison overall, thanks. But something seems janky with that autofocus/tracking test for the a7iv. I own a A7iv and have also watched quite a few other reviews and the tracking eye auto focus should be really close to the same between the two. 🤷‍♂️

Simple. Go A7 if you will take pictures, go FX30 if you're primarily a video shooter. The active cooling will save you on hot days.

Great video. I have a question. A7IV have APSC crop at 60fps. So imagine I like to take 60fps video so I can always slow it down in post later. Do you recommend buying the FX30 over the A7IV ? Because I heard that A7IV at 60fps is now true 4k and not oversampled 7K anymore, and FX30 is still oversampled 6k because there's no crop.
