Kent State The Real Story, brings together the events of May 4, 1970 at Kent State University between the Ohio National Guard and protesting students that resulted in the deaths of 4 students and the wounding of 9 others. A 3-year search for photos and films has resulted in finding hundreds of rare photos and footage that follow the events of May 4, 1970. Along with the films and photos, four student witnesses share their stories, and, a Kent State historian reviews details.
The war in Vietnam had sparked numerous protests around the United States and Kent State was one of those protesting campuses. Follow the events on the Kent State University campus starting on May 1st that quickly escalated to the tragic outcome on May 4, 1970.
Featured documentary at Kent State University May 4 Commemoration 2023.

I was a freshman at KSU in 69-70. My roommate was Barry Levine in the dorm and his girlfriend was Allison Krause, so I got to know her fairly well and she was a beautiful, wonderful person. I can see myself and my friends in several of these photos. I guess you could classify me in the 200 or so hard core group that started marching Friday night. We got more and more determined to pursue our Constitutional right to protest our grievances. We were really mad about Nixon expanding the war after he said he was going to get us out. I was 19 and knew I could face the prospect of being forced to kill the North Vietnamese. I didn't think I could kill anyone. So there was definitely pressure being put on all men rated 1A and 18+. You could agree to kill or "dodge," the draft by fleeing to Canada, giving up your US citizenship. I was raised believing in the words of the, "Supreme Law of the Land," our living document the Constitution. My dad was a freaking FBI agent at one time. But from Friday to Monday the US Constitution was suspended. I didn't get killed or wounded by the grace of God. After experiencing this horrible death and destruction I was in a state of shock and I almost lost my mind. I moved to the desert in Tucson, Arizona, but it took me about a full decade, 10 years, to recover if one ever really recovers. My belief in the, "American Way," justice, equality and the rule of the Constitution, was shaken to the core and I became a lifelong radical. I'm 72 now and I still think and analyze those 4 days fairly often. RIP to my fellow students. Never again.

I recall a May 4 observance years ago where an emotional Barry Levine gave an impassioned speech about "Who killed Allison Krause?" Very moving. Now my generation is dying off and it will be up to the younger folks to carry on this tradition. As usual, I shall be there on May 3-4 at KSU for the obervance.

13 seconds of gunfire. If you watch the 8mm film you see that it took roughly 3 seconds for the Students to turn and run from the bullets heading their way. That means that the “Guard” continued to fire for 10 seconds at the backs of the retreating Students. Ironic that the slain William Schroeder was a ROTC member. The “Guard” actually murdered one of their own along with the other 3.

I was a 20-year-old enlisted sailor working in radio on a land-based station when this happened. The news radicalized many of us. There was a state of near-mutiny on our station in the following months, and we strove to make life hard for the supervisory layer above us. There was no peace for a long time. This overt act in what can only be called a war between the generations was a turning point for many of us in that age group, all around the world. It was not a pointless event. Today I choose to remember the National Guardsmen who did not fire, and the students who fell. We can only pray that Americans will never fire on other Americans, again.

I went to Kent from 1987 to 1992 as a graduate student from New York State. I lived in Terrace Hall for two years and heard the haunting tolling of the victory bell every May 4th that I was there. Your documentary gave an excellent overall perspective on the days and events leading up to May 4th. I realize this incident leaves a lot gray areas and in particular the catalyst behind who or what prompted the gaurds to open fire. There appears to be a lot of murky water surrounding Terri Norman. Was he some kind of programmmed individual or a red herring? The bullet holes in the sculpture outside of Taylor Hall remind us vividly of that fateful day.

I have attended many of the events of the past 53 years of May 4 observances on campus. One year--probably 2011--the late Alan Canfora obtained and played a recording made moments before the shooting where a clear order to FIRE can be heard. May 4 activists tried to get then US Attorney General Eric Holder to reopen the investigation. Holder refused. I think that there have been subsequent attempts as well--to no avail. I have always believed that Terry Norman played a role in this tragedy but Norman has always remained well-hidden through the decades. Norman was widely believed to be an FBI informant at that time. However, Norman has never made himself available for interviews. COWARD! Alan Canfora died in Dec. 2020 of natural causes.

James Michener wrote a well-documented book about Kent State with that description and photos. It has been a long time since I read it, but as I recall it stuck with the facts (and rumors) known at the time, and didn't try to favor one side or the other. Although IIRC the Guard came across as poorly led and not trained particularly well for civilian riot control. He also wrote about the professional agitators that would get the students riled up, but they would leave the various protests before things got too hot.

I almost guarantee the shooting wouldn't have happened if the guardsmen had removed their gas masks after running low/out of tear gas near the fence... In a gas mask of the era, just the prior movements followed by walking up that hill on a warm day in uniform would be a hot, sweaty, claustrophobic, fogged up, limited vision panic inducing event (especially considering the deployment timing and lack of sleep evidence) ... In atleast some of their minds they must've felt corned, hit by rocks and debris, and about to be overwhelmed by a charging mob... Meanwhile it was just students moving around, with the true agitators being probably quite obvious in both their location, numbers, and actions to someone without extended time in a gas mask from nearly any vantage point... But instead a volley of fire was launched by poorly equipped (for the task), poorly briefed, and possibly poorly trained guardsmen (atleast for situations like this) with possiby the first one who fired convinced they were under immediate unavoidable attack... Possibly some guardsmen opened fire because of copycating as mentioned or because they assumed they were being fired upon by one of the students after hearing the first shot by a fellow guardsman... Overall it was a terrible tragedy that could've been prevented in so many ways with our perfect 20/20 hindsight... Also leaning towards the fogging/gas mask vision issues, look at the spread of the rounds and victims in all different areas and trajectories... As tragic as the number is, the 5 dead and 9 wounded students from atleast 69 confirmed rounds fired really shows that precise aiming was extremely difficult with even a non fogged gas mask of the area, especially with M1 rifles... (had they even actually needed to do so in some sort of violent shooting or possibly very lethal student attack) Such a shame... Especially since Vietnam Veterans, both volunteers and draftees were mistreated for years in no small part because of this tragedy... 🙁

They should've used the Israeli method of dealing with people throwing rocks/broken bottles/bricks/etc. by using "less lethal" .22lr precision shots to the arm/shoulder or lower leg... I'm not kidding, Israeli went from using less accurate suppressed semi auto .22s to now using bolt action precision .22 rifles with suppressors, high grade optics, and match grade .22lr... They commonly make non lethal hits at 300yds+... Not many people in the world consider firearms to be in any way a less lethal crowd control option! Apparently that's how they can pick out only the throwers in a packed crowd without adding intensity to the chaos by using loud short range low accuracy 12ga/37mm/40mm/ actual less lethal projectiles where they could easily be overrun even while deploying CS gas in a uniform shield line... I'm not sure if it's cruel or ingenious (setting aside causes or sides for the protest just for the thought experiment 🤔) Watching most protests a few people throwing objects creates a response of CS gas/less lethal projectiles and noise which often further provokes a very large crowd of protesters vs. LEO/Military members causing more violence/outrage and a more likely scenario of less lethal projectiles being blindly fired into a cloud of gas where someone can easily lose an eye or be killed... Honestly it's a same that water was misused by racist agencies during the Civil Rights Movement, because soaking a crowd with high pressure water is an extremely effective, relatively safe way of making a large crowd wet and miserable thus ending the protest, also fireworks/incendiary devices are less likely to be deployed against people/vehicles/structures, especially with mobile remote turret water cannon trucks deployed... It also removes a target for a violent protest (usually lines of officers, nowadays in protective equipment) and does not have the escalation snowball effect of typical crowd control tools... But you know if they were used in modern violent US protests it would immediately become "racist" even if EVERY SINGLE protester was a white college kid... I went to Youngstown State about 20 miles from Kent and myself and my friends used to go to Kent to socialize and party because there were many bars to accommodate us. I was told repetitively not to bring up the subject of the shootings but only discuss them when someone there might mention that tragic event. Also, where the students were shot was at that time considered a shrine and people walked around it, I wonder if that is still the case in 2024. By the way Jerry Rubin was a loud phony who became the consummate materialistic yuppie becoming a greed machine only caring about money in the 80s.

So much love for four students yet nothing for the 100 soldiers who died in Vietnam that same week. Nobody made songs for them, only for college students wealthy to avoid service. Flowers are better than bullets? It wasn't the National Guard who shot up the town, vandalized and burned down block after block, grafitti all over, plus the peaceful act of burning down a campus building, assaulting firefighters whose only aim was to put out a fire, and use knives not flowers to slash fire department hoses. The students instigated until it became impossible to even know what to do. Students could've ended it at any time. Just curious......any trauma for the troops who died in Vietnam that week? I can tell you for a fact that soldiers in Vietnam, upon hearing of Kent State, were outraged that all this sympathy for four college students but not for them. They repeatedly asked, "Where's OUR song? Who wrote a song for us"??

Trilateral Commission did it. Brezinski ordered the kids shot serving David Rockefellers agenda straight out of fascism 101. Read Bill Greiders acct in Penthouse Magazine in late 70s but you won't find it online. Greider died in 2019 knowing I personally accused David Rockefellers right hand man at Chase Bill Cecil a Vanderbilt scion of CIA. The babies the Russians & Nazis saved bullets in WW2 by piling their parents on top of them then using one bullet to shoot down thru all 3 effectively gave entre to these same Nazis who were given important jobs in America in the 50s esp intelligence- that's how armed troops ended up killing those kids in Ohio. To this day Trilateral Commission says they were started in 1973 not before 1970 as that would make them connected to Kent State massacre & liable if transparent investigations were conducted. I wasn't talking to Mr Cecil about Kent St initially in 1980 but was actually there to ask his permission to marry his daughter who I fell in love w that year briefly- I never spoke to her again either, she still owns the Biltmore House in fact & Mr Cecil died on Halloween a few years ago his wife a couple weeks later- a cousin of Jackie Kennedy in fact.
