I want to say they labeled it a 3412 instead of 3406. Every Tech should put together a simple pressure test kit for fuel, oil, trans pressure readings is vital for any troubleshooting, diagnosis.

44 degrees on the first day of summer sounds heavenly. I'm over summer already.

On my 3126B I've found a lot of components I've replaced have had updated part numbers and are vastly different from the old parts I took off. In every case when I've done that, it's fixed the problem and I can see where the changes they made were improvements. The oil pump and oil filter housing are two examples. It's part of why I don't mind spending the money at the Cat dealer to get the latest and greatest. And that "3412" is missing 6 cylinders :)

God I'd want this rig just to drive it. It's so clean.

7:11 Cylinder liner was like “Aight ima head out”

Had 10 trucks used for heavy haul with C12s. They all needed cylinder packs around 350,000 miles. Cat changed something in the computer and some went to a million miles after that. The biggest issue we had was leaking front structures. The steel plate to block behind the front motor mount would leak. Those were traded in for C15 powered tractors.

That is a really nice HDT RV hauler. Hope he does not have more issues. I think they stickered it wrong shouldn't be a 3412. Stay safe and healthy Sir.

Put a few drops of engine oil on the exhaust manifold for a quick check of coolant in the oil. If it bubbles- coolant. If it lies there and smokes, all good.

I like to check them first also There can be a reason that they are out of adjustment If you just loosen them all off you will miss that. Love the videos keep up the good work

I don't do diesels anymore, so it's always fun for me to watch your diagnostic logic and the little tricks of the trade, like the RTV silly cone gel getting hard while eating burgers and pizza. Those air bag jacks look so simple, but I wonder about their reliability. A truck airbag is one thing, but a cheap Chinese knockoff airbag attached to a cheap Chinese metal contraption is a horse of a different color. Keep safety in mind when using new tools and equipment. I see what's wrong with that engine for smoky red. They misspelled Cummins.

Seen the relief valve stick in the FTP, I always check it. When Cat came out with the new design FTP, did not have the updated line. Had to fabricate a fitting to make it work. Coolant in the oil on these. Replace water pump first, if that don't fix it, replace head gasket. Two styles of head gasket depends on head and block design. I would call Cat and tell them you only got half of your replacement engine.

I'm certainly not going to say you're wrong for this application, but some uses of RTV (which vulcanizes at room temperature) specify a cure time before you tighten to final torque. If you over-tighten before it's cured (or partially cured), you effectively just squeeze it out of the joint. So you *may* get less leaks if you install and tighten to 1/2 way, and then come back after lunch and torque to spec. Again, I've seen that on RTV and other sealants like Honda-Bond... but not claiming to be an expert.

CAT forgot to send you the other half of that 3412.

They gave it 6 imaginary cylinders? Should have more horsepower now, just like the neighbor kid with his stickered Honda.😁

Awesome tech video Josh this one was challenging with many opportunities for faults. I am certain the builder of this truck loves his one of a kind RV hauler. I swear when my F450 dies I’m going to build one similar to his build and not have these crazy new pickup truck prices invested in a 5th wheel puller.

Those Jack's are pretty handy, I got one awhile back when u first got it, workd well for lifting axles on low boy to do brakes

A shortcut for paint overspray masking: use aluminum foil to wrap hoses, belts, etc… Easy on and easy off.

Nice! Excellent video. I gotta say, that sure doesn’t look like no 3412! That reminds me of a time quite a few years back, I got a set of new head bolts for a 3400 Natural gas engine and they came brand new in a sealed container from Cat with no threads cut on them! Lol. The rest of them were 100% good, just missed a step in production I guess.

When you checked the two drips of oil from the drain plug it did look thin

Take the gears off the shafts in the transfer pump, keys or gear should be worn if they have that much movement. Look in side of the gears slot probably enlarged.

I wonder if a second oil sample is in order, what are the possibilities that the pump was losing fuel into the crankcase?

if you suspected a coolant leak you should have done the head bolt check for a leaking head gasket, the key way appeared to be sheared on the fuel pump drive gear, any time you have the valve cover off on a c12 you should inspect the cam followers, especially number two cylinder.

Good fix, I don't like Vevor much but I like the jack, those things can be hideously pricey.

The oil level issue could be if the engine was cold and the level was checked too soon after it had been running. It sometimes takes an eternity for cold oil to come back to the oil tray in some engines.

With the fuel pump, i had one on a Detroit 60 series that had close to 1/4 turn of slop in it. 😅 replaced it and truck fired right up perfectly

They put 3412 valve cover on a 3406 that is embarrassing, come on factory workers take some pride in the greatest cat engine ever made. I love a 3412 just as much but those mistakes make me question quality control.

How'd they stuff 12 pistons in there? Must have double the power now.

Some of the coolant canisters do have fine screens in them to catch casting sand and other debris in addition to the extender pellets. Some does not mean all obviously.

A trip to Midland Michigan (Dow Chemical country) will teach you all about room temp vulcanization. At one point they had a huge display at the airport.

I just got a Vevor 2kw variac for variable AC voltage and I'm waiting on a Vevor AC vacuum pump.. Seem like decent stuff for a decent price to me so far

Did they send you half of a 3412 or is that the result of CAT’s shrink ray technology? I really hope the guy (Iikely the boss’ nephew) responsible for the stickers doesn’t get to touch any of the internal parts of the engine.

Oh C10s and C12s I hate them so much. I had 2 trucks with them and the oil leaks out of the front structure and it cracking near the compressor and the cam followers killing the cam. I'm glad i got rid of them

I have question, sorry not quite about the video. I have started watching your videos and i love them! I just started a diesel mechanic job about 4 months working on school busses with no knowledge about mechanics really in general and they know this. I typically won't get any engine experience unless something were to go wrong and then i get to learn. I was wondering if there is anything without going to school atm to kinda fast track some engine experience without spending loads of money?

Smokey Red's new engine is not a 3412. If it was, it would be a tighter fit in the frame.

When you were manually turning the pump gears showing the slop, the bottom gear is moving on the shaft, shaft not turning, looks like it's keyed. Bet that key is nearly sheared for some reason.

Green antifreeze? Maybe perforation of liners or erosion of o-rings on liners. I have never seen correct green coolant for diesel engines. I could be wrong but my coolant was always red. Isn't a 3412 a marine engine of fairly high horsepower.

I see what's wrong with the engine for Smokey Red. The breather tube is on the wrong valve cover. It should be on the back valve cover.

Around here the steer axle can't weight over 12,000 lbs.
