We have been observing and documenting the construction of BRT stations and other supporting infrastructure along Thika SuperHighway.
This documentary is the first of many we plan to release about Kenya's quest to have a sustainable system that will enable residents of Nairobi and the neighbouring towns move with ease. A system seeks to significantly reduce the city's traffic menace.

As a Kenyan im proud of my country and the Matatu sector and moreso with the contribution it has and continues to make in our transport sector..However they have to come to terms with the fact that times are changing and competition is nigh that is much more structured and organized.That said i still think the former still has a role to play but have to change tact esp attitude wise.

I don't think there's enough space for that, I've only seen them making staircases but no place for people with wheelchairs

It’s really unfortunate that this has not been thought through. Modern infrastructure without thinking about the disabled is a big drawback.

at 22.49, this guy who lives in Huruma and lets his goats wander across the road to GSU area. He has been doing this for years. I grew up seeing goats from Huruma crisis cross the highway. It is now a super highway and with a BRT coming on board. That man (or woman) needs advice on how to manage his/her livestock in the city. Same for Maasais who bring their cows on Ngong and Mombasa roads. Not forgetting hawkers using pedestrian walks and side roads for business. Times have changed and so should they. But hey, A VERY INFORMATIVE AND WELL PACKAGED HOMEGROWN DOCUMENTARY. This is our 'National Geographic' for our infrastructure. May all Governors from Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nakuru see how to transform their cities and not wait to get too crowded before they re-plan their roads. Above all, let's us ensure cleanliness in our cities. And when our cities are clean, avoid saying 'it is like a European city', coz you are out of order. Cleanliness is next to godliness and has no color.

Great reporting. The workers seems to be using inefficient tools. They need automated tools as well as real harnesses for safety those ropes are not good enough. I am in Construction BUSINESS some of these tools they are using are not efficient obviously the Contractor is responsible for supplying the correct tools to the workers. I do however, admire the hard work these workers show just being let down by the Contractor in an effort to safe more money for their profits.

That's very true. I saw them using spanners and that should not be so. Harnesses could save them in case one is knocked by those spinning I beams or accidentally looses a foot. Safety first.

the traffic on the main highway is caused by buses and minibuses cause they insist on picking and dropping customers even in rush hour If they're in their own lane the rest of the traffic should flow a lot smoother/more efficiently every day

@@j.o.g.s8179 The role played by matatus is them being unreliable and unsafe... So what happens, they make many people buy or put cars on the roa....and that's how traffic snarl ups shape up. Most developed countries are working on policies that encourage people to leave cars at home...that's BRT, trum services, subways and NMTs...if people don't feel safe in public vehicles they end buying private cars swimming the road.

Thika road was constructed without plans for brt. Brt was an afterthought. Fitting it in includes deforming and robbing thika road it's former beauty and shape. It also weakens the foundational strength of T.R if not properly executed. I will miss the green grass that was btn the roads. Anyway I blv BRT benefits outdo the few negative aspects. Kudos!

Hate these bridges setup in the middle of a highway. They'll only add up traffic jam in an already congested highway. Besides, Thika road is literally back to it's oldself... two way lane. Meaning more traffic at peak hours. They should've installed electric buses instead. BRT buses will only bring more congestion. These designs should've been considered before building the actual highway. Thika road will become the new mombasa road. Hectic jam, confusing lanes and more congestion. Especially at pick-up stations.

Losing one lane to BRt is going backward and will mess up smooth traffic flow both side of the road.GOK designers opted to go the lazy route.

People will lose their life due to accidents. This is criminal design . There was a similar lane like this in London from Heathrow but without bus stop, it become redundant then abandoned.

The Idea is good in principle but practically it will creat more congestion on the road due to closed lane. The exit routes for brt buses will also not work well. Brt lane should have been put on service roads with bridges on where service lanes touches a roundabout. We have better designers if only they could be given a chance
