The expansion of the Eastern Bypass into a dual carriageway is 86 percent complete, with the Chinese contractor expected to finish the job in January 2023.
The 28-kilometer road, which stretches from City Cabanas on Mombasa Road to Ruiru, has been under construction since November 2021.
The contract for the Sh12.5 billion key road was awarded to China Communication Construction Company Limited last year.
“The expansion of Eastern Bypass into a dual carriageway is 86 percent complete with completion of works date set for January 15, 2023,” said Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) on Wednesday.
The multi-billion-shilling project is aimed at easing the growing traffic jam on the key road that links motorists from the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa-Nairobi highway to Thika Superhighway, bypassing the congested central business district.Treasury documents tabled in Parliament show that the State borrowed Sh2 billion to expand the road in September 2021.
The Eastern Bypass was constructed as a single carriageway, but since its completion in 2014, considerable urbanization and commerce along the corridor have occasioned significant traffic volumes.
The Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern bypasses are set to significantly cut the time motorists spend on unending traffic snarl-ups as they transit through the CBD to their destinations
The Southern Bypass allows traffic from Mombasa, destined for western Kenya and Uganda to bypass downtown Nairobi, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the city’s central business district.
The bypass starts at the junction of Nairobi-Mombasa Road and Likoni Road, about 10 kilometres south-east of the city centre and loops through Nairobi National Park to Kiambu County.
The Northern Bypass starts from Ruaka trading centre on Limuru Road, overpassing Banana Road through Runda and Thome estates.
The 31-km bypass then proceeds to Kahawa West and eventually to Ruiru, through Kamae, where it joins the Eastern Bypass.
The Western Bypass allows motorists to drive through several towns, including Gitaru, Wangige, Ndenderu and Ruaka.
The link is the fourth and final ring road in the Nairobi Ring Road Network Masterplan.

I always love your videos brother keep up the good work I have a couple questions. Number one I was just curious about what does the word Uhuru mean? I have asked some of these questions to other people and especially t Kenyan citizens and no one seems to know the answer and most people get offended at the questions. Ok, who did they borrow the money from and is it any way for us to find out the conditions of these loans? I asked this because I see many people in Africa complaining about the government's and corruption. But I always wonder if you don't understand the system in which your leaders operate how can you judge whether it's corruption or if the world system is corrupt. Example Africa has been reported for years to be in debt and not even able to pay the interest on the debts they already owe. we understand this was to keep them under control AKA indirect rule along with education and religion, which all the major leaders who were assassinated during the independent era of Africa have said. So if we know this from history who are they borrowing the money from if they can't even pay back the money they already owe? what are the conditions when the loans default because, they will. I say they will not because of my lack of belief in the Kenyan people but because that's the whole reason the money is given you don't long a man who's been in debt for 50 years money unless you want the airports you build or some of the other services that's critical to the sovereignty of a Nation. My second question is this infrastructure that's built, is it built to make the citizens life more convenient or is it to ship resources out of the continent or country. I see a lot of complaining about the congestion and traffic in African countries so maybe this is the perceived reason or the actual reason for the building of infrastructure or the loaning. I already know China is building the roads they use it's machinery and I understand that I would do the same. but does any of the construction benefit can your citizen other than sweeping up after. My third question is what are the resources that Kenya trades on the global market I think it's tea and coffee but I'm not sure are there any natural resources other than agricultural products? My other question is I have read that some of these roads were not really thought out and they are crossing migration paths. when you read things about Africa is it is an over exaggeration to give a particular view at times so I'm wondering if this been discussed in Kenya or is it just something to say the animal people in the world have made up?

@kim1570
@kim1570 Жыл бұрын
Uhuru is a bantu word for freedom, in KiSwahili and isiZulu. I'm very very (!) surprised to hear that the Kenyans you've asked this question don't know the answer! The word is in our national anthem, in both the KiSwahili and English versions, and the fact that we had a president named Uhuru should have led people to search out the meaning of the word. About the rest of your questions, you're right. This is debt enslavement in the name of 'development'. Don't get me wrong.. we still need these highways, railway lines and whatnot, they've really improved our lives in many ways, but the issue is always the over-inflated costs of the infrastructure projects. We have projects being done at thrice the cost it should otherwise have taken to do them, because the 'big people' in charge like the cabinet secretaries and such have factored in their share. In other words, corruption. Whenever we try to obtain details on the loan contracts between the govt and, say for example, Chinese contractors, those details are hardly ever publicized. Just do research on the SGR contract details debacle. That story has been in the headlines for the last few years and we still don't know what the govt put up as collateral. I do agree though, we need to get serious about obtaining info on the contracts because this is our childrens' futures being auctioned off with multi-generational debt. Kenya's main exports are agricultural exports and tourism. The official story is that we don't have too many minerals like many other African countries, and even then, I don't think we're being given the real details about exactly how much forex we generate with the few minerals we have. Some years back, a now-deceased politician called Jacob Juma tried to auction off a niobium mine (Mrima Hill at the Kenyan coast) to an Australian company. The deal was intercepted, but little is know about the state of the deposits today. So many of these things are shrouded in mystery and the average Kenyan is caught up trying to put food on the table everyday to focus on these other things. I'm not saying that this is an excuse, I'm just explaining how things are. There are rumours that Kenya has a lot more mineral wealth than we're being told about, but because we've already established ourselves as an agricultural-export and services economy, people don't look into the minerals issue, because again, apathy. About roads crossing migrations paths, I'm not too knowledgeable with that. You might have to look up maps of our national parks and the major highways to see for yourself. But that is a tricky issue, seeing that much of Kenya was initially a savannah (and still is), yet we have to figure out how to accommodate a growing population with better infrastructure. Going back to the SGR issue, it passes through the Nairobi National park which initially was met with resistance from environmental groups, but the engineers came up with the solution of raising the railway line many meters above the ground so that the animals can pass freely underneath. So there are ways of solving these problems. The question is whether we're willing to apply ourselves in doing so. I hope that helps.

One shortcoming about the construction of roads in Kenya is that they lack landscaping or beautification. So the edges are not only dusty, dirty, and muddy but ugly. It's simple common sense. In the USA they have; The beautification of Highways Act. All road constructions must comply with it. South Africa, Rwanda and Namibia are leaders in this.

@@QuantumBiz Which good?A road that was poorly designed by KULA is anything good?Are you serious?So we give KULA accolades for designing a road that has turned out to be the fastest killer in Kenya?Instead of advocating for the disbandment of KULA and Kenha,Kerra,Krb and firing of all their directors you are here praising mediocrity?How many times will we lose innocent Kenyans due to poorly-designed roads?Eastern bypass was a total waste of taxpayers money,same as outering and other useless projects Uhuru's regime did.Nothing can change that.

What's with you son? Uhuru's regime did some good work as far as infrastructure is concerned. Building of roads opens up those areas for development. Please give credit where it is due. Every regime has its strengths.
