another great tutorial. Kerdi membrane is much cheaper than the Kerdi board, but cement board is such a PITA to work with.

Thank you 🙏🏼 ya, it’s much heavier than foam and creates a lot of dust. Although I prefer it over drywall because drywall has paper

I just finished applying Durock to 5 showers. Phew! I was about to start taping the seams. Glad I saw your video. That saves me some work. I do plan on an all Kerdi system including the pans. I am curious how you did that modified seal around the diverter valve.

Can you install horizontally starting at the bottom and overlap on the way up?

Yes, as long as you have a minimum 2” overlap between sheets that will work. I’d dampen one wall at a time then apply my thin-set and embed the KERDI. I’d move from one wall to the next with this method until finished with that sheet.

@@MrDpl096 yes, in fact, this is a curbless shower. You can use drywall or cement board. But always dampen them right before mortar application

Considering a hybrid system. - Durock with alkali resistant mesh tape / screws - AquaDefence on shower walls with laticrete fabric in corners/seams/niche - KerdiTT pan with AquaDefence with the laticrete fabric in the corners 2 maybe 3 coats of AquaDdefence with ample dry time between. Seems to like to bond to anything and I've seen some videos, I just wish I could see a pro install. Thanks for all your efforts!

I’ll be honest, I don’t do hybrid systems because there are too many unknown variables. It’s fine for some folks, but I prefer using one system and learning/obsessing over how it works. I don’t accept money from Schluter or any other waterproofing company. So my views are based on what I want for my clients. If I was in your situation, I’d use KERDI-BOARD for the walls, especially if customizing a niche. I’d use the TT pan and waterproof with ALL-SET, KERDI-BAND, and KERDI-KERECK corners. I’d let the thin-set cure for 24-48 hours based on the temperature and humidity at the time of installation. If it’s very humid, I’d wait a little longer for the thin-set to cure. Then flood test. I totally understand the concerns over cost and methodology. Feel free to ask me any questions. I’d be happy to help

@@HomeRepairTutor Sound advice. I think I'm going to stick with Durock and everything else Schluter/Kerdi. I did my tub aurrond with Durock and AquaD/fabric membrane and it's been solid so far. My main concern is adhering to the Kerdi pan. Either way, thanks :)

@@userfriendly06 gotcha, I would use ALL-SET to bond the KERDI and KERDI-BAND. Then wait at least 24 hours to flood test. But you can reach to me any time if you have questions.

@@HomeRepairTutor Yes, definitely using allset after watching TileCoach's video testing allset in the glass box for 3 weeks. Seems like it makes a big difference and that was an extreme example that would likely not happen but its good to see it perform so well.

How soon after kerdi membrane installation is it ready for tile setting?

It depends on the temp and humidity. I wait 24-48 hours before the flood test. After the flood test, you can start your tile

Watched many of your videos. Love your style. Is there a reason to use cement board if using Kerdi waterproofing? If Kerdi fails then the whole shower failed right?

I like cement board instead of drywall if you’re using KERDI. Drywall has paper on both sides. Cement board has no paper, it’s all inorganic. Thus, there’s no food source for mold to grow. If I have the choice between cement board with KERDI or KERDI-BOARD, I choose KERDI-BOARD because it’s lighter and easier to customize. Also, I use the extra KERDI-BOARD to build curbs and custom showers niches. So ultimately I try to be as efficient as possible by keeping extra KERDI-BOARD for future projects.
