In the US, modern #2 diesel is pretty close to #1 kerosene since they remove most of the sulphur. WINTER DIESEL is even closer to kerosene, as it is usually at least 50% blended-in kerosene - depending on how far north, and how late in fall / winter you buy it. Blends are changed seasonally. I have a dozen kerosene space heaters and two kerosene furnaces - one furnace does NOT require electricity to run ( 51,000 BTU ). I run diesel AND kerosene in various space heaters. Depending on several factors - the main issue with modern fuel is whether it is DYED or not. DYED kerosene and "Off road" diesel will clog up the FIBERGLASS wicks. The heater in this video uses a fiberglass wick. I do not know if his additive will prevent clogging with dyed fuel. There is another kind of kerosene or "oil" heater that uses ALL-COTTON wicks. Cotton wicks do NOT care about dye or diesel - they just work. Therefore, I standardized on heaters that can use these wicks. The brands include Perfection and Aladdin. In addition, the "Moonlighter," "Omni-15," and "Rainbow" heaters CAN use all-cotton wicks. These last heaters can also use fiberglass wicks. ( I have two of these, they are smaller ) All-cotton wicks, however, are more of a pain, as they deteriorate and have to be "trimmed." Therefore, they get used-up and have to be replaced more often. Also, you cannot leave a heater on until it runs out of fuel - or you burn the wick even faster. However, the Perfection heaters can run on all kinds of relatively marginal fuels. The Aladdin is much pickier and requires cleaner fuel. As for fuel prices - here in New Hampshire in winter of 2021-2022, Clear kerosene at the pump is $3.79 and regular diesel is $3.39 at same station. ( I have to drive 45 minutes to get the clear kerosene ) I had 250 gallons of kerosene delivered to my house for $3.29 / gallon. The kerosene prices seem to be more stable than diesel - but it's nice to have options. As for additives - I use 91% isopropyl alcohol, or denatured alcohol. Usually about an ounce per tankful. I do that primarily to sop-up water in the fuel, if any ( though I use a Mr Funnel to trap water, first ). Also, a trick I learned to extend wick life a little is to pour a small amount of alcohol on the all-cotton wicks to facilitate lighting - otherwise, as the wicks age, they tend to not want to light until you trim them. With judicious use, I regularly get one full season out of each wick - which are on almost continuously for 3-4 months.

I read that you have to use 91% isopropyl alcohol. Not 70

I just bought Kerosene at $6.65 a gallon here in NY, crazy! I am going to switch to diesel, but wondering if it’s ok to mix the diesel with whatever Keri is left in my torpedo heaters, or if I should burn all the kerosene first.
@RusticTrends
@RusticTrends 8 ай бұрын
Not sure if its ok to mix. But if you look up what places have K1 It might be cheaper.

One bit of advice for people changing the wick ... you'll be tempted to fold the seam in and start pushing the flat part of the new wick onto the teeth first. Don't. Fold the flat part in and start from the seam. Makes it much easier when you get to the other side and are trying to flatten out the lump.

Kerosene is $7.50 in Memphis right now. Diesel is $3.38. I have a 23k btu heater I like to sit next to outside on chilly nights. Giving diesel a try as this thing burns thru kerosene.

It works quite well for me, as an emergency fuel, use 3/4 diesel + 1/4 gasoline in a cotton wick. With that it burns very well.

Aleady been doing it for 10 years... Home heating oil And have the same model kerosun radiant 8 ... I don't add none of that garbage you people like to put in with diesel. Straight from the can to the heater.. Just do a complete dry burn. Put enough in to how long you are going to burn the kerosene heater.. I always run it dry and never turn it off in the middle... YRUSIC YOU can go write ahead and put the extra crap in i just burn it straight. and no issues. i have 10 cerosene heaters and not have one issue burning HOME HEATING OIL (FOR THE IDIOTS THAT DON;T KNOW WHAT IT IS) (RED DYE OFF ROAD DIESEL FUEL) i CAN STRESS THIS ENOUGH TO PEOPLE!! burn the damn thing dry. and just add enough DIESEL to how long you intend to burn it. Then leave it go out.. Better yet once it goes out, put the wick up on hight and relight it. iT WILL burn all the crust shit off. aND DONT PUT IT OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CYCLE.... just let it burn completly out.

@@RusticTrends tHANK YOU much RUSTIC.. KEROSENE $4.15 a gullin or 5 gullins of the worthless shit for $30 AT TRACTOR SUPPLY OR $6 thats a bunch of shit... I put in my choice of words because lot of people just don't understand the nice words. I had to do some research ruin a few wicks myself til i do some different kleaning solutions. and so far what i done has been working very well. BURN DRY THE DAMN THING. then put the wick up on high and light it up again.. may stink but well worth it and the wick will last for years... I been on my wick for 4 years now... I dont know what you pay for your diesel. but i been burning the RED DYE DIESEL AT $2.00 A GULLIN. ANd no the RED DYE does not affect the performance of how its burned. Just met for offroad use nothing more... NO WONDER i want to burn DIESEL FUEL and people like you want to do it to.. KEROSENE is just bout worthless to me.. just a complete expensive FUEL that i dont need. YES DOING THE EXTRA FEW STEPS just to save money is well worth it.. PUTTING UP WITH THE STINK of dry burning the thing.. And doing anohter lightup then start all over again....

Look under my name you should find a video of me doing a red dye diesel test on a FANCO SERIES 22... IT seems like it doesnt matter what kind of kerosene heater you have with a wick with fiberglass wick... Just do what i mentioned in my first comment and you should not have no issues... Just put enough in the amount you will be burning it. Let the thing burn completly through the fuel and let it burn itself out.. Then turn the wick up on with the mantle in place.. If it doesn't like try few different areas with a cigar lighter, if it doesnt lite at all, it should be good for another round of HOME HEATING OIL

@@RusticTrends I know here in the UK home heating oil ( 28 sec ) is not the same as road diesel. I'm sure it would work in these heaters 28 sec or road diesel. I have been informed by a lorry mechanic that Maxol fuel is the cleanest about as he changes filters and one fleets filters were always good, they used Maxol. Probably be good for these heaters too. Now burning different fuels is fine until you check out the heavy metals and other substances they produce, that's another story altogether. Heating Oil can have a high sulfur content of 2,000ppm and is not the same for every state. High sulfer content is not Good. If you're were living in an area like Pennsylvania in 2015 you'd have been poisoning yourself slowly. Pennsylvania's home heating oil may have a much lower sulfur content now but that I don't know. So really what works well for one person may not work well for another as their source of even home heating oil may be different and possibly even quite poisonous. Unless you have the right test equipment who knows what you're breathing in. Just because a carbon monoxide alarm doesn't register anything does not mean it's safe. Just My two cents but hey, don't take my word for it, do some proper research and evaluate your own risks as we all have to do anyway I guess 👍 Nice heater!
