From February 11, 1983. Von Erich defends the NWA Missouri State Title against Greg Valentine on a card that saw Ric Flair and Bruiser Brody go to a 60 minute Broadway. This footage, as is quickly apparent, came from Japanese television. All-Japan was on hand that night to capture Giant Baba winning the PWF title from Harley Race.
It should also be noted that Valentine was at this time the United States champion in the Mid-Atlantic region, making this a match between the holders of what were widely considered the two most prestigious regional belts in the NWA during this era.

I grew up in East Texas and Kerry was one of my childhood heroes. Watching this match just takes me back to how charismatic and loved the man was, and I find myself getting sad that his poor life choices destroyed such a promising career.

This is a fine example of what real Pro-Wrestling looked like. Brutal and real enough that you knew you wouldn't want to be in that ring. No frills. No bullshit. Just real Pro-Wrestling at its finest. Never to be seen again.

Yep. It was the true #2 belt in the NWA structure. Of course, this was mainly due to the fact that the NWA was headquartered in St. Louis and if you did well in St. Louis that immediately put you on notice.

I saw a shoot interview with Valentine where he talked about this match. Apparently Kerry messed up the planned finish so they completely improvised the small package for the pin at the end. Worked out great. Really can’t tell where the screw up was.

When it seemed like it was some secret illegal fight event, held in some hidden away underground area owned by the mob....where men could be men, smoking, drinking, and coloring while watching some good wrestling fights...I love the down and dirty atmosphere of 70s to early 80s pro wrestling....when it's target audience was men, who enjoyed being, and feeling, manly 💪🤨🚬

The three Von Erich brothers where the most innovative and talented wrestlers that ever stepped into the business. They worked stiff and realistic more so than some of the so called superstars in the NWA. Yes, Kerry got a bad rep, but damn he wad so talented in his good matches. Kevin was the most acrobatic high flying wrestler ever. David would've elevated WCCW to the level of the WWF with his wrestling ability and charisma had he lived. Kerry, Mike, and Chris perhaps would've lived better lives if David had lived. I believe David's passing sadly unraveled the family in moderation. It was just bad unfortunate karma. I still love those kids. I'll never forget them.

Everyone went through Missouri because Bob Geigel was the NWA Prez and it was considered very prestigious. They didn't allow anyone to jump off the top turnbuckle. So is the case with Kerry,he was a big, muscular and strong guy at the time, but when compared to today's strong and big wrestlers,he looks like a midget, compared to Goldberg at his prime,Jotista(gaytista, batista), wrestlers sure have gotten larger and being muscular is part of the deal...McMahon and Patterson have a lot to choose from the menu.
