Excellent video, much appreciated for the time you spent going into all this detail. I think the ability to have 30 gun profiles alone is worth it to me for the elite, the rest of the extras are just a bonus. The range card and multiple targets is pretty nice too.

Been wanting a Kestrel. There have been a vast amount of increasing capabilities since the days of the 3000 series. It has been a situation of "paralysis by analysis" to get whatever newest model currently available. The ballistics model is best for me. The Horus reticals are great but my setup is more simplistic. A regular, round dot, Mil-dot is for me. Those football shaped reticles are rediculous since measurements are determined from a percentage factor of calculation. Each football dot having a 25% of a Mil with the thin line having a 75% of a Mil. Round dots have a simple 1/10th calculation. Each Mil-dot having 2/10ths measurement and an 8/10ths between the dots. May finally take the opportunity to get a Kestrel.

Lucky I stumbled into this video again. Yesterday finally pulled the trigger on a kestrel, the 5700 elite. Once I watched this video and did about 2-3 hours of surfing ended up cancelling the elite order and placed order on the standard 5700 ballistic. For me, what the elite offers was not worth the 300€ at this point. And like this video said, if I ever seem like I want the added features, I can just upgrade it for the 300€

Hi so new at all this and don’t want to sound ignorant but after watching your great video here’s my setup. Begara b14r and Ruger precision rimfire but main rifle is bergara, I do have quite a few different ammos but probably will stick with just a couple. Nrl22 I’d say max distance 450. So I see main difference Is range card and target card and of course 3 gun/ammo to 30 gun/ammo. One thing I’m not sure is in ballistics on non elite is there .22lr ammo information. I do have a magnetospeed v3 coming so I can get true average velocity. I have no intentions of any bigger guns or probably any more. So I know you probably get asked all the time but in your opinion which would you go with. Thx Sean

Sam, awesome comparison. Extremely helpful. Thanks so much. At about 6:30 in the video, you said that the Ballistics does use Applied Ballistics as the solver, and that it's a misconception that they don't. I just went to Kestrel's website and in the product page for the Ballistics model, they specifically state that "The 5700 has ballistics software, but it's not Applied Ballistics". What's up with that? Seems from my perspective like it definitely does use AB for the software... Why would Kestrel say that it doesn't use AB?
@PanhandlePrecision4 жыл бұрын
red_dot_scott It doesn’t say that on Kestrel’s website, but an outfit that sells Kestrels still has it wrong. They’ve been told, but I don’t think they’ll ever fix it. Kestrel’s website is kestrelballistics.com

My Kestrel database (phone app) lists the Hornady ELD-M 140 grain bullet BC at .291. In this demonstration I noticed that you have it listed as .310 in your Kestrel. Is that because of a truing exercise that you have applied? or are you using one of the multiple lot numbers listed in the database? A bit confused...Another great video...Thanks

Yes on the truing. It's what we used with four Krieger barrels chambered in 260 Remington last year.

If you are in the Northeastern part of the US where magnetic declination is 21 degrees, your direction of fire will be off. Question: If I change VAR in the weather menu to reflect the magnetic declination of my location, will it be reflected in the ballistics section and in my captures and calculations of a firing solution?

Thanks for all the great content. I'm a hunter (not a competition shooter) and recently purchased a Christensen ridgeline 300WM. Its shooting really nice with a .33" group at 100 yards. I was about to purchase a kestrel 5700 elite but one of my buddies just got a sig 2400BDX rangefinder. I like the idea of not carrying an extra tool/instrument. My question is, should I go with the Kestrel or a ballistic rangefinder like the sig BDX or the Leica ballistic rangefinder. Are temperature, elevation, and wind that important? I know wind is important but it can vary quite a bit between where you take it with the kestrel and where the animal is. I hope not to shoot further than 600-700 yards.
@codyblack14982 жыл бұрын

I have the elite version. Is there a way to set the wind direction to be based on the compass rather than the target? Meaning can I say the wind is north west and then use the live capture to give target direction and have the kestrel adjust the wind on it's own?

No. Simple degrees or clock positions, either entered manually, or with a wind capture relative to DOF.

I have been using the 4DOF app and like it. I know Kestrel makes a 4DOF model. If you are shooting Hornady bullets I assume the 4DOF Kestrel would be a good choice. But, if you're shooting a larger variety of bullets that Hornady doesn't have in 4DOF (like Nosler Accubond), it would seem to me that the Elite would be the best option because it isn't just tied to bullets within the 4DOF app. Am I thinking about that correctly?

@MKChase-uj9vx3 жыл бұрын
As somebody that shoots, but does not shoot anything like ELR, what is your view on Kestrel v Strelok software? Is it simply that the Kestrel integrates the software and the hardware into the one device, or is it that the Kestrel does so much more than Strelok ever could? I mean, would a more basik Kesterl combined with Strelok not give 'average Joe' the same outcome? I sometimes feel like Strelok is a taboo word in certain circles because it has shaken the hardware manufacturers to the core. May well be showing my ignorance here.
@PanhandlePrecision3 жыл бұрын
I like Kestrels because they’re fast, easy, and durable. I started with Exbal on a crappy little pocket PC, then BulletFlight on several iPhones. A few months after trying a Kestrel, I ditched all of it. There was never an accuracy issue between those three, just an ease of use.

Question: Does data input include barrel length? Ballistic models and the calculators they are used in are pretty useless when they are based on data from a single barrel length, especially the longer-than-usual barrel lengths used by ammo manufacturers to test their ammo.
@PanhandlePrecision2 жыл бұрын
Barrel length itself is not an input. Twist rate of the barrel and the velocity it produces are. Different lengths can produce identical results, and similar lengths can produce different results.
@fog89692 жыл бұрын
Got it. Thanks. Presently playing with an 11.5 and finding actual results significantly different from online calculators, including Applied Ballistics. Before I buy, I just want to know that the calculations that the Kestrel puts out are going to be dependable. If I'm going to have to work off of my own calculations instead of depending on the Kestrel output, it won't be entirely useful to me. Of course, I'm probably missing something about it all. I'll figure it out.
@PanhandlePrecision2 жыл бұрын
@@fog8969 Actual MV and how well the barrel stabilizes the bullet you’re using is what you’ll need to pin down. If you input an accurate MV and BC to the Kestrel, it will give you dependable predictions.
@fog89692 жыл бұрын
Roger that. Thanks.
@fog89692 жыл бұрын
Since I don't have the equipment to measure MV, I'm working on using manual iterations or Solver or Goal Seek in one or more Excel ballistics calculators to estimate MV from bullet drop data collected from just two or three shots. For example, zero scope to 50, then take and measure shots at, say, 100 and 150. Then manually iterate or use Solver or Goal Seek to iterate MV to find the MV that produces those results. If that worked to estimate MV at some acceptable level of confidence, then use or at least further test that MV for expanded info.

I have had the 4500NV HORUS for at least 8 years. I find it hard to learn to use and harder to get the ballistics to match real world shooting. I have shot it out to 1,000 yards and there are more factors than what that meter is apparently telling me. I noticed in this video that the two meters you scrolled through sitting side by side had different readings in every screen including the time. That is not reassuring me that the new meter is better. You are also likely using two meters that are newer than the one I have. I will take this video with a grain of salt at this point.
