Trajectory validation is an important step for successful long range shooting. Truing your ammunition, rifle, and scope to the ballistic
solver ensures more first round hits at distance. In this video, we show how to adjust the Kestrel 5700 Elite to match our 300 Win Mag
drops out to 1100 yards.
Check our video list for more instructional videos on the Kestrel 5700 Elite.

You have always helped me with this stuff, more than any other source. so thank you for that. I have a MV Adjustment, (Trajectory Validation) question for you; Went out to my 1000yd range facing north, (zeroed my Creedmoor facing south), Hit 10" high at 1000yrds, confirmed with three shots. Adjusted MV successfully. But that threw my other distances off more and more the closer I came in to 200 yards. (then if I adjust for 200, my 1000 is back off. (tried with G7 and Litz curve)

Almost a full MOA at 1000 yards is quite a bit to be off. There are a lot of things to check, including scope click values, perfect zero, range conditions, parallax, muzzle velocity, etc. I would be hesitant to adjust MV in a solver to account for that much at 1000 yards.

Panhandle Precision Thanks. I’m going to try everything again this week. Start from scratch. Do you usually select the “AB CUSTOM CURVE” option , or the G7?
@PanhandlePrecision

Craig Melchiano I use the G7 BC straight from the Kestrel’s library.

Panhandle Precision Last question I promise. (This is very helpful.) So I. General how is it possible to adjust where you’re hitting down range, and it not effect the closer distances? Seems like if you fix it “out there”, it’s going to throw the close ranges off.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 5 жыл бұрын
Craig Melchiano It’s not possible. That’s why it’s important to double check the basics before making big adjustments.

You've been very helpful. I have another question for you. I have 7 profiles in my Kestrel 5700 Elite LINK. I sent them all from my iPad via Bluetooth no problem. when I cycle through my guns they all have ballistic solutions above, but my MK12 rifle says "nanD" for Elevation? do you know what that means?

Once you have gone through the process of trajectory validation (cal mv) and found that the adjustment delivers an accurate firing solution, are you done, or is this something that should be done across varying environments. I'm thinking through the process of me updating my MV temp table will the new data during the temp changes over the next month. Would it impact the output in a way that I should on a cadence perform trajectory validation. Love the videos and really like the velocity you get with the 260 terminator. Once the barrel on my 260rem is out, it might be time to swap over and get more out of my 140 bergers with that cartridge. Thanks for the guidance!
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 7 жыл бұрын
The trajectory validation is taking all the small tolerances in scope click values, bullet B.C., sight height, etc. out of the equation. Once it's done, you shouldn't have to adjust again. If the M.V. changes with temp., it should be a linear correction according to the difference.

Your videos have helped me very much for years. Thank you very much. I have the Kestrel 5700 Elite/Link and went shooting today with my .300 Win Mag with 220g MatchKing load. i was zeroed/confirmed at 200, then went out to 400, 600, and at 800+ I had to start adjusting velocity like you show here . Then I was on out to 1350yards, but when I came back within 600 yards I was off again. Do i need to have a profile out to 600 yards, and then another one for 600out to 1350 yards? Should I adjust BC? Thanks
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 7 жыл бұрын
No on the multiple profiles. Maybe on the B.C. A velocity change to sync up a mid-range trajectory will have a bigger affect on a long range trajectory. Have you read this? :panhandleprecision.com/trajectory-validation-ten-steps-success/

Great videos, on my Elite I see Cal DSF as well as the Cal MV. Do you think one gives better overall accuracy in calibration over the other? Same results? Keep up the good work.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 7 жыл бұрын
DSF is only used out in the subsonic range of the shot. If you don't validate to the distance shown in that screen, it won't change anything. Ideally, MV truing should be done where the load goes transonic, but it will adjust if validated closer. For what I do, MV truing works fine.

Sorry one more question. My readings for my other profiles are all working nicely. However I keep getting a reading for "Density Altitude" . I can't seem to turn it off. The Baro is reading 29.00 and my altitude is 900 feet, but I'm getting readings of Density Altitude of 2696 ft. My results are good so I'm just ignoring it. any ideas? Thank you.

great videos thanks very much. question regarding the truing of mv. when you save the ACTUAL moa and mv, does the kestrel keep it for that range? with that temp, etc? and does it use that corrected value to determine other ranges? i hope it does, because i would like the kestrel to keep the ACTUAL TRUED values i enter into it. thanks again, and keep up the videos... much appreciated.
@SnowDog183
@SnowDog183 7 жыл бұрын
disregard. just ran the experiment. it does keep what you enter, and it does recalculate all ranges based on the trued value. what is interesting and a problem with all these calculators is that if you true at range A then range B will be wrong. Then if you correct/true range B, then range A will be off and maybe also range C. thanks again for getting me tinkering.

I had the same issue. Had good data with engagement out to 650yards. Further out I sent a few rounds from what the kestrel projected at each target and made corrections on my scope. Wrote it down and moved further out. Maybe Sam could do another video that touches just on this subject. Sometimes it’s as simple as a muzzle velocity change to impact where you want it. As the bullet slows down at further ranges the bullet BC changes so playing with the BC can help. I would only change one at a time to narrow down what the bullet is doing

Great videos thank you. Quick question just to clarify. I developed a new load, zeroed my rifle at 100 yards. I chronographed my load with a Magnetospeed which gave a 2710 mv average. My range goes out to 600 yards. I inputed all the environmental conditions into my Kestral 5700 AB. The Kestral advised a hold of 3.9 mils which hit low on target. I adjusted to 4.5 mils which gave a center hit. Now I trued my Kestral following your video and adjusted the muzzle velocity to 2621 fps which adjusted and confirmed my dope to match the 4.5 mil drop. This has now been adjusted and saved in the gun profile. This range trip was at 80 degrees. My question is, four months from now when temperatures are in the 50s will the Kestrel give an accurate dope when environmental conditions are entered. Or should I at a minimum create a muzzle velocity curve based on the 80 degrees corrected muzzle velocity and use that. Or will this simply get me close without re-chronographing and confirming dope at distance? Thanks and I appreciate any advise.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 7 жыл бұрын
The Kestrel automatically adjusts for air density using air temp and pressure. Once it's trued, it won't matter what the pressure and temp are as long as your ammo is temp stable. Why are you inputting conditions?
@kellyl593
@kellyl593 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. Sorry to clearify I was not manually entering the atmospheric conditions. The Kestrel did that on its own. I just corrected the mv to match the dope to the 4.5 mils needed for a center hit. I'm using Varget powder which should be pretty stable. Just want to be certain that once trued the Kestrel will provide accurate dope in varying conditions.

Does the K5700 allow for ballistic BC truing like Advanced Ballistics does on the phone? What I mean is 3 different ranges and hold overs vs the 1 data point in the video. I ask because on my phone AB can create custom drag models.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 7 жыл бұрын
On the Elite, you can choose between G1, G7, or AB custom drag curve. You can also adjust/true with Drop Scale Factoring.

But why would you have to "true" the ballistics solver if the ballistics software is accurate? I measure my bullet speed and input all data accurately, yet I still have to "true" the software? What that really means is the software sucks, doesn't it? If your inputs were accurate and the output is wrong then the software sucks.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 3 жыл бұрын
You’re not truing the software, you’re truing the inputs. The output is only as accurate as the inputs. Inaccuracies or stacking tolerances with BC, MV, ES within the MV, scope tracking, reading conditions, etc. will cause more problems than software. The software doesn’t suck.
@w.harrison7277

@@PanhandlePrecision My software allowed me to choose Berger 215 grain bullets, so why wouldn't it already have the bc dead on? And I input barrel length and all that. And a kestrel will input accurate environmental data. So where are the inaccurate inputs coming from? Its because I don't see input error that I blame the software.
