Watched it while eating frozen coconut+peanut butter+shredded coconut keto cookies. On a sidenote, olive oil is actually very good and healthy, just as olives, especially for keto. Extra-virgin olive oil has one of the highest smoking points, among all oils, while avocado oil is the highest smoking point among all oils, the only other thing that's better than avocado oil is ghee. If you don't have avocado oil, or ghee, or extra-virgin olive oil, you can mix both butter and olive oil and cook on slow fire, in order not to hit the smoking point.

Awesome video. Great to see another high level martial arts athlete doing paleo/keto style diets like myself. I want to prove to the world that high level athleticism CAN be done on ketones. The work of Stephan Phinney PhD & Jeff Volek PhD in “The art & science of low carbohydrate performance” is definitely requires reading. Highlights the sports performance enhancing benefits of a ketogenic diet, its essentially a giant scientific review on their studies of this subject. “Deep nutrition” is also a great book to look into on this subject, although the other is better imo. Spot on, sir. As a Primal Health Coach, and someone who's been studying nutrition, and experimenting with various methods for the past 8 years -- I approve this message. Having a health coach can help shave off years of figuring it out (as with anything else). Just look for one that isn't dogmatic, who realizes that everyone is different, and knows not everything will work for everyone. Genetic testing and getting a comprehensive generic report can help with that, too. For me, it mostly told me things I've intuitively figured out over the years. There were some surprising things in there, as well.

I have had great success with keto for weight loss, but I find it very difficult for endurance when going for long rolls. How are you finding keto for endurance for hard training sessions? I find my gas tank drains quickly and I am not able to be as explosive. On the other hand, when it's moderate intensity, my endurance is fantastic. I feel keto has helped my body adapt to fat burning and moderate intensity excercise (around 140-150bpm heart rate) can easily be sustained for long durations, but I really struggle to keep up when I get into peak heart rate ranges over 165bpm. So far I've been doing intermittent fasting, with a weekly 36h fast, with low carb intake of around 50g of carbs (usually sweet potato) before a hard training day works well, but not sure if that is optimal. Btw, first comment, but I love the channel. Thank you for the content and the motivation to keep training and improving.

I actually messaged Chris Irvin one of the leading researchers for the Ketogenic diet pertaining to athletic performance. I asked him about doing BJJ and not having the explosive power needed at certain times and he informed me that to reap the benefits of Keto and perform explosively it takes several months to fully adapt. So continue doing BJJ as you usually would, deal with bonking out explosively. Put sea salt in your water, take exogenous ketones as a pre-workout. Stay under 30-50 carbs per day. Eventually after many months your body will just click and you should be able to perform optimally. Fact of the matter is a higher belt levels require those glycogen stores far less than white to purple belt.

Generally speaking IF works to some extent because of IF being calorie restriction (that's why IF doesn't work better when calories are controlled) and to some extent because it helps with circadian rhythms. You won't get rid of glucose from your blood because it'd send you into a coma. Insulin (in humans) is not a storage hormone. And most doctors get surprisingly little education about diet and training. That's why we have dieticians and PTs and kinesiologists. Generally, certain people fair better on certain diets much like certain people are better at BJJ and others are better at kickboxing and some can only stomach boxing. As for why people are obese - number one always will be calorie count in versus calorie count out. Many vegetarians have minor deficiencies in certain micronutrients so eventually either their metabolism slows down a bit or they move a little less which creates a slight caloric surplus accumulating over time as fat. Other people eat way too much simply because it's vegan - so calories don't count. I've seen fat vegetarians chugging juice and eating vegan cookies like there was no tomorrow and their answer was "it's vegan". The actual data, if we keep track of calories shows 0 difference between keto and high carb. For many people, keto works because they feel full on it. On the other hand, some people fare poorly on keto. Personally, if we want to talk about good complete diets since a few months I recommend Vertical Diet by Stan Efferding. It's scientifically sound, developed mostly starting from athletes and from there Stan developed a lot of ways it can be tailored regarding carbs/calories. And his approach is probably 99.999% scientifically sound, he even gives quite a lot of explanation why while carbs aren't bad, people may feel bad on high carb (carb sources are different, much like you mention fat sources are different and it's important).

Kind of surprised by some of Prof. Ryan's comments in this one. The anti-vegetarian arguments are honestly just silly. I mean, for every vegetarian he knows that's overweight from eating too much bread and sugar, I know 4 or 5 omnivores that are overweight...because they eat too much bread and sugar. I won't even get into the topic of land use--the ethics or sustainability--for agriculture vs cattle raising. Those last 4 points--eat fresh, eat organic, eat a lot of fat, and don't eat a lot of sugar--are solid for anyone regardless of what diet they might follow, and probably can be attributed to the bulk of his health improvements (great that he was able to address the threat of diabetes without resorting to medication).

Another interesting Video. One thing I often wonder about. There are quite a few Muslims who train BJJ that observe Ramadan. It's wild that these guys don't eat or drink water from sunup to Sundown. They have a good meal before and of course have a big meal when they break fast in the Evening. I'm not sure if they reschedule training during the month or not. I imagine they grew up and got used to it, but I couldn't see going all day with no water, unless I did absolutely nothing.

from the few muslims i've known, they just go through life as regular during ramadan. think about it, it's just a sunup-sundown intermittent fast. they also do it "dry." i've done a 24hr dry fast once. felt weird, but it was totally doable. i read something that the average muslim actually GAINS weight during ramadan since they tend to eat a lot during their feeding hours, more calories than they would typically eat when not in ramadan.

Then again Ramadan is also a Holiday as in they don't work, I've spent some time in the Mid East/ South West Asia and the heat and humidity on the Gulf can be Brutal. Diet is such a big and deep topic and there are professional athletes and medical doctors and phd nutritionists in support of almost any kind of diet. It's hard to say anything is really definitely right or wrong. I think a big part of that is that people's bodies are different. I have a training partner who is quite muscular and lean at 50 yrs old and he's a fanatical vegan. One stereotype for vegans is they're low testosterone- he seems more like he has high testosterone for his age. I like low carb, almost keto, I just find it too much of a hassle to get rid of the last bit of carbohydrates. So lots of animal products and I lost about 50 lbs of fat in my 2,5 yrs before getting my blue belt. The argument that agriculture for plants is harmful to animals too is wrong because a farm cow for consumption eats like 20 lbs of plants for it to produce a pound of steak. So you didn't think that through. I like animal products I think they're good for me but for animal welfare and the environment the vegetarians and vegans definitely have a point.

You state many truisms, but... A cow raised on a ranch grazes when grass is out and hay when it’s not. Just like bison, deer, and elk, they can eat naturally off natural, I disturbed plains. It all grows back without any help from man, and the animals don’t disturb the root systems of the grasses. Hi Ryan, I want to give a few thoughts. I agree with the comment talking about being plant based, with info from Essylsten, Ornish, and others. You asked about the four doctors you mentioned. I don't know too much about Dr. Fung, but I think I agree with him a lot on the fasting. I do want to comment on the other three though. I'm afraid they do not have the weight of the science behind their claims. Beans do have lectins, but I have yet to find the person who likes to eat them while they are still hard, seems quite baffling. The lectins are gone long before any reasonable person would enjoy beans. And you don't need a pressure cooker, as Dr. Gundry claims. The tests have been done. And beans are the number one food indicative of longevity. A research topic here is the "Blue Zones". Dr. Baker displays limited knowledge of nutrition, and has posted his bloodwork online, and he is prediabetic as well. There is no scientific evidence supporting carnivore diets, and the evidence does in fact show that the more whole plants you eat, the healthier you are. Plants are not poison. We've figured out thousands of years ago which ones not to eat. Those either killed us or made us sick, but they do not cause chronic illness, especially not our leading causes of death, that honor goes to animal foods. Processed foods are bad for you too, but animal foods aren't a nutritional necessity. And the diabetes is caused by the fats damaging your cells ability to use your insulin. Processed sugars just compound the problem. Thanks for listening, let me know what you think.

@@KamaJiuJitsu You're welcome. I don't mean to be divisive, but it is frustrating sometimes to see how widespread misinformation can get, especially so quickly. It sucks that things such as money and bias has to get in the way of the truth, but it all just comes down to who is skilled enough to pick apart the good from the bad. All in all, the science is clear, but you have to be skilled in order to not be fooled by someone with bias or monetary incentive. It's like BJJ, you know there's stuff you don't know, and that stuff you have to work at to understand and be better at. Anyway, good luck with your nutrition studies, I know it can be confusing.

@@7lets Dr.Here's the bottom line: the only diet that has been scientifically demonstrated to reverse heart disease, to slow, stop, or reverse early-stage prostate cancer, and to reverse aging by lengthening telomeres (among other benefits) is a whole-foods plant-based diet low in both fat AND refined carbohydrates. No one has ever done a randomized trial proving that a high-fat, low-carb diet can reverse heart disease. We now have 40 years of science that shows it actually makes it worse. It's not just fats or carbs--animal protein is harmful and plant-based proteins are protective and healing. For example, in a study of over 130,000 men and women, animal protein intake was associated with higher premature mortality from all causes, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and the most common types of cancer. Replacing animal protein with plant protein lowered the risk of premature mortality. In another study of over 6,000 people, those ages fifty to sixty-five who reported eating diets high in animal protein had a 75 percent increase in overall mortality, a 400 percent increase in cancer deaths, and a 500 percent increase in type 2 diabetes during the following eighteen years, whereas plant-based proteins reduced risk of premature death in all of these categories--again, a double benefit. I'm sharing this not because I feel particularly dug in on one camp of the diet wars and want to score points for my camp, but because I think the science is overwhelming and while you may lost weight on a keto diet, I don't like to see my friends leverage their long term health in the process. The above research can be found in Dean and Ann Ornish, UnDo It! How Simple Lifestyle Changes can Reverse Most Chronic Diseases (2019). There's lots of great research on the benefits of fasting (especially the work of Dr. Valter Longo. I've had great success in losing weight using fasting and a whole-food plant based diet.

Dr. Caldwel Esselstyn, peer reviewed in Cardiology. Dr. Dean Ornish, more peer reviewed work than I can list: JAMA, Lancet, Oncology etc. Blow your mind, watch Forks Over Knives. Also, I believe diet is on a spectrum... what works for me may not work for you. I went from my Dr. wanting to put me on a Blood Pressure and Cholesterol med, to saying: keep doing what you're doing and you won't need meds.

Good for you. Dean Ornish saved my cousin many years ago after he had two heart attacks in his 60s. He died in his 90s! Now, Dean does not eat pure vegan. He does eat some fish and maybe low fat dairy. I eat "vegan with seafood, mostly fish." Yes, whole food - high plant. I also do IF. Just pay attention to your nutrients. Many people eventually get into trouble with a pure vegan diet. Just because it is better than what you were eating, it may still have some problems. I hope I don't come across as being critical, just as information in a discussion. I don't support strict paleo, keto, or carnivore. I'm talking as a lifestyle, it's different in the short term.

@@Docinaplane Dr. Ornish has a great book on the subject... "The Spectrum" Which, the TLDR version is: Eat healthy to the degree you need to be healthy. For some, this may mean throwing in a salad now and then. For others, this may mean daily fruits and veggies. For others still, with a family history of most males dying before age 45 from heart disease (which is my hx), this may mean eating a while food plant based diet. The peer reviewed science from Dr. Ornish alone supports this, in addition Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. McDougall, Dr. Neal Barnard... etc. It's more than just, I'm a Dr. so do this... it's, here's the scientific evidence, it's reviewed, and published. This is the standard of science. This works for me. I am aware of others this does not work for. As KamaJJ says above, you need to figure out what works for you. Gundry is the closest to having a more conventional diet, but he says what to stay away from (i.e. processed foods, tomato seeds and skins and other nightshades, beans (unless cooked in a pressure cooker), fruit not in season, all bread except for sourdough, milk only from golden guernsey cows or goats, but eat a lot of avocados and olive oil). but even Gundry says to eat grass fed, grass finished beef, pasture raised chicken, wild caught fish.

I don’t listen to doctors unless they have many papers and are well versed in the nutrition community because doctors are given no training on nutrition, many of them are speaking without having done the studies or even looking at them. I went vegan because it’s the best diet without question for the environment, the fact that it has helped me gain over 60 pounds of muscle in under 2 years is just a bonus! I’ve had the best gains of my life from going vegan and proved all my friends wrong when they told me I’d be skinny for the rest of my life

@@messi444444444444444 I call bullshit. Received wisdom is that a man can gain between 1-2lbs of muscle per month naturally. That is 48lbs in two years. What cycles were you on?

A whole foods plant based diet is the healthiest diet for humanity. All the pier reviewed science is overwhelming in favour of that! Anything else is just bro science unfortunately!!

Disagree with just about everything. I've done paleo and keto. Now vegan for 2 years. Feel no different between any of the diets. My blood work is great. Still lean and muscular. I think you're all overthinking it. Just avoid processed food. The results you see when changing to any of these fad diets are usually because you stopped eating fast food and sweets. That goes for vegetarian and vegan diets too. Humans have been eating vegetables for so long. What, suddenly their the secret killer? Ridiculous. The longest living cultures in the world are not on paleo, keto or carnivore diets. They're eating mostly vegetables and grains and maybe occasionally they'll have some animal product. Don't over think it. Don't eat crap. Exercise regularly. Get enough sleep. And socialise. Love all your Gracie Jiu Jitsu stuff Ryan. I hope more people watch your stuff.

You vegans are the most closed minded group of people. There is a militant vegan who wrote a book I read. Lierre Keith. “The Vegetarian Myth.” Good book. Sorry, I’ll never go plant based. You can, though.
