Keto Diet vs. Atkins Diet: What are the Differences? Thomas DeLauer…
Classic/Traditional vs Modified/Mainstream (4:1 vs 2:1)
The classic keto diet consists of a ratio in grams of fat to nonfat (protein and carbs) of 4:1 and 3:1 - now popular keto diet is slightly modified and consists of ratios of 2:1 and 1:1
* 90% fats, 10% protein, less than 1% carbs*
The problem with this diet for anything other than medical use is obvious: protein intake is very low, which isn’t optimal as proteins are the primary building blocks of the body. They’re used to build tissues like muscle, tendon, organ, and skin, as well as many other molecules vital to life such as hormones, enzymes, and various brain chemicals. It has been found that a ketogenic state can still be maintained with an increase in protein and a slight bump in carbs. The type of ketogenic diets popular today are generally high-protein variations of the original - Protein recommendations can vary, ranging from 20 - 30% of daily calories, but carb intake is set to 50 grams or less per day, with the rest of your calories coming from dietary fat.
Ketosis and Disease Treatment:
The ketogenic diet is well established as therapy for many disease states and should be considered first-line therapy in glucose transporter type 1 and pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency. The ketogenic diet appears effective in other metabolic conditions, including phosphofructokinase deficiency and glycogenosis type V (McArdle disease). It appears to function in these disorders by providing an alternative fuel source. A growing body of literature suggests the ketogenic diet may be beneficial in certain neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In these disorders, the ketogenic diet appears to be neuroprotective, promoting enhanced mitochondrial function and rescuing adenosine triphosphate production. Dietary therapy is a promising intervention for cancer, given that it may target the relative inefficiency of tumors in using ketone bodies as an alternative fuel source.
Epilepsy Study:
A study published in the journal The Lancet Neurology, in 2008, showed the efficacy of the ketogenic diet in children. In 145 children, aged 2 to 16 years old, who had at least daily seizures and had failed to respond to at least 2 antiepileptic drugs for 3 months, the mean percentage of baseline seizures was significantly lower in the diet group than in the control group (62% vs 137%, 75% decrease) Twenty-eight children (38%) in the diet group had greater than 50% seizure reductions compared with 4 (6%) controls, and 5 children (7%) in the diet group had greater than 90% seizure reductions compared with no controls.

I was diagnosed with Stage 3C Triple Negative Breast Cancer in August 2015. It had spread to 18 lymph nodes. My Oncologist recommended a Healthy Keto diet, with IF, to me. I did 20 weeks chemo, surgery and radiation. I also have been doing keto with IF. As of last February, I am No Evidence of Disease. I know that it isn't just because of the keto/IF, but I do think it is contributing to the whole picture.

More oncologist and other related healthcare professionals need to step outside the standard of care when I comes to treating cancer, specially the dietary side. Good for you, we share your story with as many as possible as there are others who are being diagnosed have no idea as to the benefits of IF & Keto in conjunction with chemo & radiation

This is true. I'm starting to figure this out. Atkins is less complicated as well and honestly, maintenance of weight loss on KETO involves centering your diet around PROTEIN, just like ATKINS. This Gluconeogenesis doesn't happen easily at all. Thanks 👆

for me doing atkins was very effective in weightloss to be honest about a lb a day. i think the reason i feel like i should go back to atkins is because its simple keep my carbs under 20 lean protien and veggies thats if u want it a simple as possiable. the keto diet seems like alot of couinting they want you to test urself . what i was planning was go back to atkins incorporate ACV in water before each meal and also a 16/8 fasting time table in hopes for even better results. i even found even if i cheated half the times on carbs the 1st time i tried the diet i still lost weight i believe because i was still reducing my carb intake by half compared to before . now im able to stay the course . I allow a cheat meal here and there only after the 1st 2 wks of induction not before i find allowing myself this keeps me from derailing . i honestly think i would get fustrated with the counting and aspects of keto . let me know what you think.

I do agree with you, April. I did keto years back and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I started Atkins 20, which is very similar to the keto diet of only consuming 20g carbs. I felt that when I was on the keto diet, I was constantly calculating the macros and still felt very restricted, which I did not like and can’t stick to it. I did the Dukan diet before which I stuck with for a few months and it was very similar to the Atkins diet. With that diet, I was also in Ketosis. I combined all three and just stuck to eating low carbs and ate protein mainly and not being too strict on how much fat or protein I’m consuming. I’m still losing a lb each day. And I finally feel that I might be able to be on this diet as a lifestyle

I need something. Nothing has worked for me. I’m 5’ 230lbs. It’s hard to breathe, my body stops sweating within a few minutes of exercise, exercise makes me need so much sleep, I need to try something else. I had prescription weight loss. Was eating 3 salads per day, and a total of 1300 calories. My Dr said I was starving to death so I went up to 1600 calories per day and lost some weight, now I’m eating too many calories and can’t move even with low carb high protein. Something’s gotta give. I think going bulimic in my 20’s screwed me up for now, in my 40’s, diabetic, high cholesterol, high salt, low protein, smoking, and depression. It’s so hard. I stayed on a diet and exercise program designed for me for 8 months and I gave up after no weight loss. I felt stronger and healthier but no fat was coming off. Then I got Covid and couldn’t eat at all. Food with no taste is just texture and all the textures are disgusting. When I got my taste back everything tasted like bleach smelled before Covid. Bleach smells different to me now. And foods I liked are gross to me now. But I keep eating everything to see some semblance of normalcy.

Well, we were at our wits end feeling very bad physically & mentally. We made a pact to just try cutting the crap out for 1 month to see how we would do, to "get back on track" and I searched 'Low Carb Recipes' in KZfaq and his videos were the first to come up. I can't remember exactly which ones we watched first, because we watched about 10 in a row, I feel like you should just watch anyone that intrigues you by the photo or title, whatever gets you interested. We had never even HEARD of keto! So we decided to try it 100% after watching those 10 videos, and we haven't stopped since January 3rd! My advice for a beginner is IT GETS EASIER, you just have to keep going!

Buy a bottle of Keto Sticks, they are urine keto test strips, they help you make sure you're loosing weight. Test with them every day. You have to start by eating zero carbs and no caffeine for about 3 days to get the body into the state of ketosis. It takes most people about 3 days. Exclude sweeteners for the first few days also. If you're ketosing you are loosing weight so your test strip will show pink/purple color. If you're not ketosing you are not loosing weight so you're test strip will not show pink/purple color so you have to keep eating zero carbs and no caffeine until your test shows pink/purple color. When the body runs out of carbs to use for energy it switches to using the body's fat stores for energy and they show in the urine as ketones. The test strip detects the chemicals in the ketones. The darker the tint color means the heavier you're ketosing meaning the faster you're loosing weight. Read Dr.Atkins book titled Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. He explains ketosis and low carb dieting very thoroughly in this book, it's so easy to understand. Its the book my dad followed to loose 275 lb in a year and 2 months and his weight was mostly in his belly. He kept with low carb eating, he ate all the meat and fat he wanted and got healthy. He started with zero carbs and no caffeine for a few days to get the body into the state of ketosis. He bought Keto Sticks, and he tested every day. After he achieved ketosis he gradually added more carbs. He added 10 - 20 grams of carbs to his daily intake every following week until he was intaking no more than 40 grams of carbs per day through out his weight loss journey. You can stay at 20 grams of carbs per day to ketose heavier until you reach your weight loss goal. You can adjust your weightloss speed by eating more or less carbs but keeping it under 40 grams per day should keep you in ketosis, it's a recomended carb intake limit. 20 grams of carbs per day will cause quicker weightloss. Some people can tolerate a little more carbs per day maybe even up to 100 grams of carbs per day. You can try gradually adding more than 40 grams of carbs per day and see what it does to your ketosis if you want. If the body is in the state of ketosis it can not store fat it can only shed fat and other toxic weight so he ate all the fat and calories he wanted to keep himself satisfied while ketosing. There is no need to count calories as long as you are keeping your carb intake low enough to keep you ketosing. Forty grams of carbs per day is a recommended limit to keep the body in the state of ketosis. If you have a cheat day or cheat meal your body may stop ketosing because of overconsumption of carbs so all you have to do after a cheat day is start over by eating zero carbs and no caffeine for a few days to get yourself back into ketosis. Caffeine spikes insulin thus slowing weighloss so some people restrict it completely even after the first week to avoid slowed weightloss. Eating fat , especially rich animal fats , while ketosing causes the body to ketose more heavily, provides energy, satisfies appetite healthily, lubricates intestines , eyes and skin and is crucial for organ function including the brain. Animal meats should not be restricted either they are too important for replenishing the muscles and organs. Also, no colon cleansers are needed on a diet that causes the body to ketose, in fact it can be detrimental. I made that mistake and almost killed my kidneys it hurt so bad so I quit colon cleansers while keto dieting and I felt so much better. Ketosis causes the body to naturally cleanse itself including the colon. The body works hard enough while ketosing to shed weight on its own. There are veggies allowed in the first week about 1 cup per day they are practically zero carb. They are listed in Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book. He also wrote a book giving carb count content of many foods to help you stay on track. I've read both of these books. Test your urine an hour or two hours after trying new packaged foods or snacks to test their carb content honesty. Or if you prefer the keto blood testers you can use that instead or use both. Some people say blood testing is more accurate and quicker. I prefer the urine strips. I analize my ketosis the day after trying new packaged products also. Eating practically zero carbs for a few days should get your body into deep ketosis. Sorry to repeat myself but I hope this info helps people loose weight fast like my dad did. I mostly eat meat and their fats, low carb veggies and low carb fruit ,salads, nuts not so many cashews, unlimited butter, full fat sour cream and full fat mayo, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, heavy cream, avacados, Sweetleaf Stevia Sweet Drops (practically zero carb sweetener) too much is bitter so use a few drops at a time until it tastes right, it sweetens lightly but it's a life saver. These are some packaged products to help if I have strong craving for sweets: Hungry Buddha Keto Bars, Lilly's baking chips all flavors, Live Soda, Zevia Soda, Rebel ice cream, Atkins lemon bar and cheesecake bar, Two Good yogurt, Love Good Fats Bars, most of the Quest bars are ok just watch the ingredients on the packaged products claiming to be keto friendly, most of them are pretty trustworthy. Quest protein chips are awesome. Everyone's tolerance is different. There are good keto bakeries online. I pray you understand all this completely in Jesus' name. God's blessings to ya! Also, watch the Keto Connect videos called "Sweeteners Explained" or "Good and Bad Sweeteners For Keto". I tested Atkins lemon bar and cheesecake bar and they didn't slow my ketosis at all. I want to test more Atkins foods since Dr. Atkins died, I always test new low carb products and brands.

Dr. Atkins was a keto genius, he explained ketosis in his books and if it weren't for him no one would know what ketosis is. I don't know why some people are trying to deny that Dr. Atkins saved many many people's lives and still is cuz his books are still available. I'm guessing because of Atkins foods since he died but that's no reason to deny he was right. They shouldn't be trying to redefine keto dieting.

I think people tuning in for the first time need a direction and there is a lot out there. Dr Berg was a good start but then I started looking around at you and a few others out there. In order to get more people to start they need to start at the beginning at the keto and intermittent fasting videos. Then the rest of the video catalogue will make sense. 63Sonotech/US Traveler I break it down like this 😁 Eat meat, eggs, salmon, butter, cheese, coconut oil, avocado and avocado oil, olive oil, dark leafy greens, broccoli, asparagus, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts, macadamia nuts, pecans, walnuts, and get your electrolytes in, so salt, potassium, and magnesium. Avocado and spinach are great for potassium. Pumpkin seeds for magnesium. Pink sea salt for sodium (a little sprinkle on your food or a pinch in some water) Drink lots of water. That's the basic list of ketogenic diet to make it simple. You are looking for 75% fat, 5% carbs, and 20% protein. Don't worry about the intermittent fasting until you are comfortable with the keto lifestyle. When you are confident with those foods, and have been eating keto for a while, and you know how many calories you need, you can then look into recipes for keto treats😀 I hope that helps!

Listen to Ben Bikman. He's got a bunch of super good info! 3 Steps: 1) Control Carbs 2) Prioritize protein (it will not kick you out of ketosis as this video purports.. listen to Ben Bikman for more info) 3) Fill with fat (the rest of your diet should come from healthy fat sources) Just a little more info on the protein thing. The whole idea behind the keto diet or any low-carb diet is to reduce insulin levels. Someone following the standard american diet (high carb) will have a considerable insulin response to protein, however, someone following a low-carb diet (or even someone in a fast) will have no such response to protein. In fact, it would be very dangerous if we did have a spike in insulin without glucose in the blood. Again, listen to Ben Bikman for more info and to have a more reliable source of information than this Texan.

Started Atkins (again) Jan 1 and after doing the two week induction with under 20 g carbs I found videos on the keto diets and realized I was doing keto so I continued with keto and still on it. After I hit my target weight I do around 30+ carbs. My mojo is rarely over 1.0 with most around 0.7 so I'm probably around 2/3 to 1. It ran 1.5 to 3.2 when I was into weight loss but I was into butter, ghee, coconut and MCT oil plus more avocados plus lots of nitrite free bacon. It's not hard for me to know the difference as I was on Atkins when he was still running his company back when and I couldn't maintain it. Lose a bunch in four or five months and it took about two years to gain it all back and that was the best diet of the time as far as I am concerned. Previous to Atkins I did the HCLF diets and I gained it back before the holidays of the same year.. The difference with keto and Atkins or other diets? Cravings is the difference people, no question about it. I'm about 5lbs over my Army discharge weight in 1963, It's obvious why I like keto.

Thomas! Virtually every video you post changes my life for the better. Have been in some sort of keto (according to breath monitor) for a couple months. Struggled to find a way to keep fat intake high without boostng protein. Using the idea of direct ratios, I discovered 2 things: 1) I've stopped eating eggs in favor of coconut cream and 2) the "20-25 net carb" is not so important as long as the carbs are real low GI. Been maintaining a 4+ to 1 fat/protein ratio, staying in keto, intermittent fast every other day and losing weight. Was on a "clueless plateau" (was actually gaining fat back) for about a year but, since using your lessons, have lost 19 lbs in 45 days. Now only 13 lbs from my decade long goal. No way to say thank you enough.

Interesting to present my 84-year-old mother to a Keto diet where she, as a nurse in the 1950's 60 and 70's, was sceptical at first until I mentioned that it was similar to an Atkins Diet. She knew at that point exactly what I was talking about and brought out one of her old medical books on the subject. I'm still new to this and my body prefers a higher intake of proteins.

I am currently reading the induction section of a book titled “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution”. It was published in 2002. One of the rules of induction is that nuts and seeds are not allowed. On page 133 of the book there is an example menu of an induction breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The sample induction dinner is 9 oz of broiled salmon, kale topped with garlic, lemon and sesame seeds. Question: Why are sesame seeds included in the sample dinner if nuts and seeds are not allowed during induction?
@Deanriley
@Deanriley 6 жыл бұрын
Atkins got me to go low carb many years ago; the induction phase is plain keto. The downside to the old low carb ala Atkins was using too many artificial sweeteners and soy flour; so many who failed at Atkins got side-tracked with these substances.

Have been in nutritional ketosis for almost a year ... with some brief breaks to celebrate holidays and birthdays, etc. Keto absolutely works. It's a fantastic approach if you're motivated to follow a strict dietary (and ideally exercise) protocol. Three things you'll need to incorporate if you too want to maximize its benefits: 1.) measure your food & track daily macros in a spreadsheet 2.) regularly test blood BHB, at least until you know how far you can push your macros and remain in nut. ketosis and 3.) eliminate ETOH (this will effectively kick you out of keto and yield less than optimal results). My two cents.

This makes perfect sense as to why I overeat protein and ketones are gone. It's not terrible since I'm more in maintenance than anything. But I absolutely have to moderate protein to maintain ketosis. It's also nice knowing I don't need carbs in order to break ketosis so I don't have to go out of my way with carb rich foods to do so. Maybe because I'm not fat adapted (actual ketosis) yet is why this happens... but it does happen

Hey Tom, thanks for the post, very informative. Currently, my macros are set at Fat: 65%, Protein: 30%, Carbs: 5%, I weigh 155 lb and have my caloric intake set to 1,705 per day. I fast daily 16/8 or 18/6 depending on how I feel and how my morning workout went. I'm setting at about 14% body fat, which is a huge improvement from where I came from, but I'd like to get down to 11% but without losing muscle mass, should I increase my fat intake and lower the protein? Will that negatively affect my muscle mass??

Thanks for this video, I've had a lot of people asking me about the comparison between these two styles. When you say fat:protein ratio, are you talking about mass unit comparison or calorie comparison? I feel pretty energetic around a 80/17/3 (f/p/c) macro breakdown but that only comes out to about 1.5:1. Would you recommend increasing that to 3:1 and consume only about 0.25g of protein / lb of BW?
