The amazing loner Kevin Ayers sadly died on 18th of February 2013.
He wrote the most delicate songs.
Enjoy this concert from London on the 28th of April in 1992, only one month before Ollie Halsall, Kevins guitarist and close friend, died.
It's a private videorecording, and the quality is not the best, but it has historical interest.
Please support Kevin Ayers' legacy by buying his extraordinary records

I was there. Met this girl Paula from Liverpool. After, we went backstage and knocked on a door. Kevin Ayers himself opened it and let us in. I, being mexican, got talking in Spanish to the three musicians in the band other than Kevin and Ollie, two boys and a girl, all argentinians. They shared a joint with me. I told them they talked funny and they fell about laughing as they mimicked my accent saying '"you talk funny" Ha-a-a-ha-ha! Good times, good times.

It's sad enough this video! Kevin sings his beautiful songs in a kind of sorrowful way,and Hollie plays as if there was no way out. It's a concert of a great ,great melancholy.

The Kevin Ayers catalog was a big part of my musical upbringing from Joy of the Toy onward. An eclectic mix of eccentric English songs almost like a musical trip through alice in wonderland with a ever so strange banana obsession!!!! I got to see him live in 1975 at the Astoria in London with Andy Summers & Zoot Money just before the punk thing kicked off & just about when Summers met Stingo & Copeland to do their pretend punk band. As a musician myself I recorded a cover version of May I for my brothers funeral as he was a big fan. Ayers songwriting was always very amusing and he even got quite poppy in his later material. He never quite broke out commercially partly, I think because he was so laid back himself. He was always surrounded by a group of very talented musicians from Oldfield, Summers, Coxhill, Bedford, Wyatt, Halsall etc. Whatevershebringswesing and Confessions of Dr Dream albums are stamped in my head from a young age. He was a one off with music full of vision and humour but possibly fuelled by the occasional substance, mainly red wine. A bit mad but a memorable talent. Too old to die young!

Thanks Kevin, fine music, fine attitude too! Saw Soft Machine Atlanta 1968 with Hendrix at Municipal Auditorium. An all day affair, two sets of shows. Soft Machine was Ratledge, Wyatt and Kevin. I still think S Machine and Kevin Ayers have large group of Ga/Atlanta fans from that concert. I am sure one of them. Thank you and RIP, friend.

He’ll never be a has-been. New fan here, I wasn’t even born when Kevin was recording his classic albums but I can assure you that for me and my peers everything he ever did is pure gold and pure magic. His music has inspired and comforted and literally saved so many people (myself included) who are young enough to be his grandchildren - surely it means something. Thank you, Kevin Ayers, both your life and your music mean a world to us! Forever grateful 🙏🏻♥️

hmmm...without dope we'd have very little good anything (musically). Then of course there's psychedelics. Some folks are allergic to penicillin, does this mean we shouldn't have antibiotics. If you cannot keep from killing yourself with dope, you are a real fuck up and likely would become addicted to sniffing glue or booze or cocaine or whatever. The nod scene is a place where musically, happy mistakes are made and new things created. The unconscious state of dope lets in something special.

It's a real bitch to dig those outside the mainstream and to only have video evidence of quite awful quality left of them when they go. As a fan of Frank Marino it's great to finally have something special of his to watch and Ollie was a comparable guitar player, but to be honest this should have gone to the recycling centre, not uploaded to youtube. I admire those of you who can sit through all of it, I can't, bye, bye.

I'm not sure I quite get KA. With the best will in the world the songs are languid cowboy-chord cycles and the voice never rises above the level of lugubrious. The band is OK but Kevin himself seems 'off the pace' as they say in football, under-rehearsed. Only the presence of Ollie Halsall - always inventive and lively in his playing even when playing very straight in a simple song context as here - lifts this video into the 'watchable curiosity' category. I get the impression Kevin Ayers appeals to a certain type - ultra laid back self-contained middle-class opters-out, possibly from Canterbury :-), who like a smoke. LIstening to this I find is like waiting for something to start happening, though I sense his fans don't want or need much to happen, just let the cool guy in the corner say his piece, when he gets round to it, that's enough. I'll give him that though, he has 'cool' coming out of his ears.
