I could too! He reminds me of guys I grew up with and looked up to. I hadn't seen anything about him for awhile until I saw him do an interview on another youtube channel then saw he had a book out so I bought the kindle version after reading great reviews and I can say so far just from the 1st few pages, I think its going to be one of those books I can't put down!

Really enjoyed this video! Got my A&P in 1970, after 4 years as a helicopter mechanic in the USAF, and another few months working at a small Cessna dealer. Took written at the FAA office, withe the practical examiner coming to the shop. Three years later, after a grueling 9 hour day at the FSDO, I was the youngest AI they ever certified. Traded maintenance for flight instructions. Those were the days!

@@FlyingNDrivingyep, pretty silly situations at time but I did really enjoy his book, he worked his way up in aviation by becoming an A&P like I did. His “tolerance” for risk it quite a bit higher than mine which makes his stories pretty interesting.

great story. In 1978 I learned to fly at " Dallas North airport" in Plano, TX; an airport that has disappeared into a condo complex. It was just South fo Aero Country. In the late 70s, anybody in the middle class, if they wanted to, could learn how to fly and own small aircraft. I paid $12/hr for the C150 and $3/hr for the CFI. Those days are gone.

I paid $10/$10 (plane, instructor) for my ticket in 1973 while in high school. You are absolutely right about the cost today. My dad was a carpenter and on what he earned back then not only did he raise a family and buy a home he also owned a 1962 Comanche 250. Most of his friends that hung out at the airport on weekends and had airplanes were construction workers like him. As a blue collar worker you couldn't do that today no matter what.

Some of the biggest problems within the aviation industry is government, lawyers and the education industry. Education industry is a problem not only for aviation but virtually everything else in as much as it consists of paying someone a tremendous amount of money for being indoctrinated and then given a piece of paper. Thank you Kevin Lacey and others like you. That is how I did id some 60+ years ago.

Sweat equity is the way, hard work is rewarding in so many ways. Back in my youth I drove a airport fuel truck, not sure why they let a kid drive a truck around aircraft but I loved every minute, met an amazing man who had a 1948 Fairchild 24 and spent my off hours rebuilding the Ranger 6 engine with him. He was so patient with me learning safety wiring, had to redo so much before I got the technique down. I learned to fly in that airplane, flying into the Nut Tree or the Half Moon Bay airport for lunch. I never got my PPL due to me going off to college. I have to say that I learned so many life lessons from that experience, much greater than just aviation but how navigate the world, how to be a man, a gentleman, to be useful and make a difference. Thank you Al Kaler for giving me direction and being an exceptional role model.

In 1980 we could rent a Cessna 152 for $15.00 an hour wet at a local FBO. Add a pilot and it was $25.00 an hour. At the local college flight school you could get a half hour free for washing one of their Cessna 150’s. Teledyne Continental would pay for your flying lessons and they’d let you take one of their Cessna 172’s for the weekend along with a Shell credit card and you just paid a flat fee based on the Hobbs hour meter. God I miss those days!

In the early 90’s a 152 was $35 an hour wet. Now the avgas cost that much.

Kevin Lacey was my favorite "character" on Airplane Repo. He was the only guy who knew how to FIX airplanes and then fly them. I'm sure a lot of that show was pure fiction or re-enactments, but Kevin was still my favorite guy.

These stories are great. Sounds like aviation was a whole lot more fun, welcoming, and cheaper back then. In the last 20 years, it seems there is a big push to keep anyone who isn't interested in flying professionally out... Kinda disgusting how many people are onboard with this sentiment. I'm in AZ, and it's hard to find a place where you can get a BFR if you're not enrolled as a student in some program. The places who aren't doing this either won't call back, or their planes are junky and a little concerning.

I agree with Kevin- as a student you should know starting out how to work on an airplane like a Cessna 150 type to know everything about the plane ! Then learn to fly it as well- I flew one but never had the opportunity to get my license full on..

I think the program like the one Kevin has setup is awesome... Wish I had been able to be around "old heads" like him doing a program like that when I was a kid... Also as far as the having issues with the A&P shortage or having A&P's that actually want to work... There are plenty out there with some great experience and darn hard workers... If only it wasn't such a PITA to transition from military service to civilian maintenance..

"Aircraft Repo" was one of my favorite shows - what always amazed me was how he had the skills to fly so many different kinds of aircraft. I also had wondered if Kevin Lacy was related to Clay Lacy. I worked for Associated Air Center over at Love Field until the company shut down in 2017 and one of our regular customers was Clay Lacy. I guess is safe to say that BOTH Clay Lacy AND Kevin Lacy are aviation legends. Clay Lacy made a very good documentary movie in 2005 called One Six Right showcasing the Van Nuys airport and of course Clay Lacy was involved in movies, so that's why I have wondered if Clay and Kevin were related.

That was priceless Kind of like the hay days of avation Using a prop from another aircraft Only kid could do that and having a vet see his prop missiy And helping kids to grow in life is priceless as well Remember the college were I received my private pilot license from was around 1500 in flight cost. A WW 2 vet head of the avation Department and teacher as well Have to love life at times remember getting to learn how to spot trailer's and never been in pick up much less a 18 wheeler. Much less ever back a trailer Just a hour or two of training at most and let loose. Was amazing what real drivers could do in just a minute at most taking me 1/2 hour to do. God you have you have to love war story's as they say from a mother to a dish washer There just amazing His book is just got to be amazing

As someone who grew up in GA and spent almost 40 years as an AMT for a major airline at a major Maintenance Depot the A & P Crisis is real. I predict that it will get a lot worse for GA because they will be competing with the Airlines for the Available A & P's in the market. A senior AMT at a Major Airline now earns about $60.00 / HR plus Benefits. GA cannot or will not be able to compete with that. The Major Airlines have a huge number of A & P's Retiring in the next 3-5 years that will create an even bigger demand for A & P's.

Just got my A&P in April.. I’m currently Active Duty AMT with the coast guard. With 60$ an hour it’s hard to want to stay with the military. My future is looking good but uncertain 👍🏻

@@CalVlogz In your situation I would apply with all the Major Airlines starting about 90 days before your discharge date. The Majors are currently experiencing a very high number of retirements and will be for the next 3-5 years.

I used to know a lot of older pilots who thought the third wheel is always at the back and did not understand what all the fuss is about tail wheel. I think it might be the insurance doing that. For a pilot trained in recent Cessna, it is less difficult to transition to tail wheel than someone train in regular car and have to drive with a clutch. turbines are even easier to fly than piston , especially the new ones with FADEC, but they have more aux systems, if you can fly a well equipped Bonaza, you should have no trouble flying a Caravan by just reading the manual the night before. A big problem with older turbines is hot start, FADEC took care of that.

Hard to find qualified people when the pay and workplace treatment are bad. People lives are in the hands of airplane mechanics, it’s not about looking cool, they’d shold be paid their worth since they’re not just turning wrenches but are literally responsible for ensuring aircraft are safe for so many souls on board
