Keep in mind that the WWF was recruiting Hogan to return in early '98. Hogan had all the leverage in these negotiations. Smart business man...

Yeah, USA Network were pressuring the WWF to bring Hogan back after seeing all he was doing for WCW. They said as much in their own surveys they were sending to the WWF. Hogan turning heel in 1996 did wonders for him not only in WCW and TNT/TBS, but outside of the companies as well.

Hogan wasnt going to job for Austin in 1998. Getting the entire NWO before the merge would have been "too sweet" say New Years 2000, or imagine Wrestle Mania 2000 with the NWO invading WWE on one end with ECW invading WWE on the other end.

and last, In March 2016, Hulk Hogan was awarded $140 million in damages by a Florida jury in an invasion of privacy case over Gawker's publication of a sex tape: on March 18, Hogan was awarded $55 million for economic harm and $60 million for emotional distress; on March 21, 2016, the jury awarded Hogan a further $25 million in punitive damages. So for a huge ppv, he was getting a 500k signing bonus (2mil/4years)... he was getting 675k for showing up, most of the "buy rates' for the WCW ppv's were actually lower than the bonus levels they paid him at so he likely never got the buy rate bonus, but he would get 15% of a big show instead of the 675. He likely pulled a million per ppv back then, which is what I always heard, and that's not counting any of the Nitro money.

Hogan banked in WCW. But he deserved it. He was an integral part of the story that skyrocketed their business. Didn’t hurt to have WWF around to use as leverage. I heard a story from Prichard I think where he mentioned that Vince met with him in public, and knowing he couldn’t match or beat the deal gave Hogan his blessing to use their meeting as leverage in his negotiations with Turner. Life was good for the Hulkster for many years.

@@watchmyepics There’s no doubt that Hogan is a political monster and his ego must have been off the hook. But I seriously doubt he had anything to do with how sales were processed. It’s more likely that the company, in order to maintain the contract, would have fudged sales here and there. Hearing things about Hogan? I take most with a grain of salt because of relationships with other talent, office, personal friendships & problems.

I know I would love to have received even 15% of the money likely paid out of this contract while Hulk worked for WCW annually as a salary or consulting fee. Superstar wrestlers should make that much if Hollywood actors make as much or more. For example, the stars of Seinfeld were getting paid 1 million per episode in 1997, and they weren't enduring a hellish travel schedule and sacrificing their bodies. Nitro used to be one of the biggest shows on cable and Hogan was pretty much the star of the show. He should be paid accordingly. Goldberg, Hogan, Hall, Nash, Bischoff, Tony Schiavone, Sting, DDP, Savage, and Luger all deserved to make millions from 1997-2000.

Seinfeld's actors got that because they were bringing in that much..and more...to NBC. You don't get paid based on how hard you work. You get paid based on how much your bring to your employer. If a wrestling promotion could make $200 million a year with just 4 performers, than those 4 performers could make $20 million a year too. And that is what NBC was making off the backs of just the 4 main actors on Seinfeld.

Steve won the belt in March 98 against Shawn then Shawn retired. So post April 98 was when Steve became the top guy and started making the big bucks. But he said he never had a downside. He didn't need one. He was making the 150 dollar a month downside the first few years he was on top. I know from Conrad's podcast that Shawn was on 700k per year in his final WWE deal and was told no one would make more than him but then Bret was paid 1.3 million a few months after that deal which really ticked off Shaun. Then Bret famously was talked out of that deal in 97 because WWE couldn't afford to pay him. So at the start of 98 when Hogan penned this deal Shawn's 700k p/y deal may have been the biggest in the company. For sure Rock wasn't anywhere close to that amount, he was still a mid carder in 98. So comparing this deal to Shawn's is laughable. Hogan was getting more then maybe the top ten highest paid WWE guys in 98.
