I can't believe I haven't reacted to this yet! Say no more, it has been done, and it was fantastic. Kevin O is in the dictionary next to talent.

I'm beginning to believe that Kevin has found a way to tap into the Matrix and load whatever skill he wants at the drop of a .... beat! Talent doesn't begin to approach what he is capable of.

From what I hear the only thing he wasn't great at (meaning at professional level) by the time he joined PTX was singing. He could rap, beatbox, play sax & cello, beatbox while doing cello, speak a very difficult foreign language fluently, was an all around great student, all achieved by an amazing work ethic & near inhuman level of multitasking. The thing he had spent the least time on was actual singing, but as such an overachiever of course he didn't stop there. So after joining PTX he got lessons (from Avi mostly) until he was confident on his singing too, & that's when they started having him sing sometimes also. His role as beatboxer in the group doesn't leave much room for that, but he's doing it more & a lot in his solo work now.

I was all prepared to put this in perspective, thinking "Kevin's great, but this was a Salute Our Talented Youth show and we shouldn't apply inappropriate adult standards"... and then I heard him. I've been a saxophonist in my time, and I'd have been proud to play that well on my university degree recital. I'm floored. Clearly he won't let himself do any of his talents less than superbly. That indicates countless hours of practice. And, we know, similar hours of cello practice. While excelling in his studies to the point of getting accepted at any top university he chose. He knows no limits.

He had just graduated from Yale with a pre-med degree when Pentatonix contacted him (after seeing his KZfaq video of him celloboxing) to come to California to join them in the Sing Off 2011

I can't believe I haven't watched this before! Thanks for reacting. If I had seen this back then, I certainly would have thought he'd go far, as you said. I probably would have assumed he would study music at Yale, though, and of course I wouldn't have known his parents are medical professionals (and now his siblings too!), so I imagine I would have expected a musical career for him. But of all his musical talents, would I have thought he would become world famous for beat-boxing? Don't think so.

KO is just a wizard - pretty sure he's not from this planet :) Wonder what would have happened if he then went and got the cello out !! Thanks Jerod - always a pleasure to re-watch anything that applauds Kevin or Pentatonix. When the heck did he get time to learn all these different instruments to this level...and learn how to speak fluent mandarin ???

Thanks for this reaction. His ability with both the cello and sax is really amazing. He doesn’t just play them but he excels. I wonder why there aren’t more recent videos of him on the sax. Really interesting to see where he was at this stage. It kind of explains how we got to where is is now. Kind of interesting that he found fame as a beatboxer!

I've played in bands and orchestras for years, and I'm here to tell you this was amazing. His vibrato and tone is stellar! It seems that he has given up the saxophone, and that is just a bummer! @@vidsorama2 His degree was in East Asian Studies, but he did complete all pre-med requirements. There really is no "Pre-med" degree, you just have to complete certain classes to be considered for med school. Most pre-meds major in biology or chemistry or similiar, but he fell in love with the Chinese language and changed his major from music to East Asian Studies. He is awesome-smart, talented, and a good person.

That's not the case. He had just graduated from Yale and was preparing to go to med school. When he told his parents he was deferring med school to give PTX a shot, I think they were indeed a little bit worried, but as you say, it all worked out.

@@JoSedunary But that's still not correct. First year of pre-med is freshman year of college. He had already graduated from college (Yale) when PTX formed. So no, he had completed all of the pre-med requirements while getting his college degree in East Asian Studies. Regardless, I think we can all agree that it was a fortunate event that he decided not to go to med school and chose to be a professional musician instead!
