One of the greatest live bass solos ever captured on vinyl. This is an example of a bunch of musicians slipping into a groove and staying there. That takes not only the technical ability to execute it, but the musicianship and trust to pull it off. Doesn't happen much anymore.

One of the most stunning singers - in ANY genre - of the 20th century. Met the band briefly after a gig in Minneapolis in '77. Jon Camp was an incredibly nice guy, and Annie was not only very sweet, but DROP-DEAD gorgeous. 🥰😍

Fyi Carnegie Hall is located on West 57th Street in Manhattan in New York City in the United States. It is one of the premier classical music venues in the world. A concert in Carnegie Hall is as prestigious as a concert at the Royal Albert Hall IMHO. I was lucky enough to sing there as a 7th grade school chorister in the Spring of 1974 and I have never forgotten it. The album Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall was a favorite of mine during my teenage years. I literally played the groves off of it . Radio station stations WNEW- FM and WPLJ- FM played cuts off of it all the time especially Ocean Gypsy and the excerpt from the Song of Scheherazade. Both of those songs feature Annie Haslam at her angelic/ethereal best ❤😊.

Carnegie Hall is the premier music venue in NYC. Andrew Carnegie was one of the great robber-barons of the 1800’s. In addition to Carnegie Hall there is a Carnegie Mellon University. This music was the soundtrack to my life in the 70’s along with the band Kansas.

Renaissance was my very first concert back in 1975, the Scheherazade and Other Stories album was just released. Great band, I fell in love with them, this song was their encore. One of the things I loved about listening to Annie's voice is that, unlike all the opera singers with her range, she didn't feel the need to add vibrato to E V E R Y S I N G L E N O T E coming out of her mouth to show off her control (like they do) & I always appreciated that a lot. She'd add it when it was appropriate at the end of a sustained note, but never excessive...

Wow, that was even better than I expected, and I'm surprised that I hadn't heard it before. Annie's voice was the best I'd ever heard it. You need to get her on your show. We really were spoiled, Jim. And it was the spoiled child in us that made so much that came after disappointing and unacceptable. Folks that hear the music that came after, first, will harbor no such bias and are thus better able to accept the music on its own terms. But it may also damage the ear in the process. I saw Renaissance with Al Dimeola here in Charlotte, and had every other album they produced, surely. It was not an ideal paring. They started with Al, so Renaissance seemed sleepy in comparison. Here, look at a railroad flare. Now look at this candle. Better to start with silence and build. Nother great show for the books. Come on Annie! Give Jim that interview.

The original vinyl indeed sounded exactly as bad as in this video. Normally I'm not into remasterings, as most of them have overblown bass, treble and dynamic compression. But the Carnegie Hall album is much improved on CD.

Yes, the vinyl version sucked from day one (I had an early copy). But somehow I prefer the vinyl though, as you said, the CD sounds way better. Maybe because at the time my audioset wasn't that good and it burned into my brain tthat way. Oh, and listening the vinyl through headphones is even worse 🙂

They release a 2-CD compilation in the 90s...and it includes this version of Ashes are Burning. I don't know if it is remastered though. Pretty sure the sound quality is simply due to available tech of the day. Today's AI could probably clean it up a lot. Check it out to get a lot of their biggest tunes.
