Why would the Browns extend Andrew Berry BEFORE they know the final OUTCOME of his "mortgage the farm" trade for DeShaun Watson? Now I hope Watson pans out, but it has not worked out to date. If this trade continues to go sideways it will easily be the WORST TRADE IN BROWNS HISTORY and in the top 5 worst trades in NFL history. Certainly seems irresponsible to extend him this soon.

It's not like Berry made that trade without the rest of the front office and ownership being on board. It was an organizational decision.

Maybe because they’re judged on all moves overall and they see value in stability. Both will have offers at the end of next year and they may have less chance of keeping both or either.

It’s not anywhere as bad as you think. It’s the Haslams money and the picks had a 25% chance of panning out Even if Deshawn doesn’t win a superbowl are you suggesting anyone drafted since the trade would have? What free agent that has hit the market since him at QB has been available?

For all we know, this decision was not pushed for by AB himself. Certainly not one he made unilaterally, as Nicholas's comment already addresses.
