hi!! i would love to 参加 this series, as i am an international school student from hk who sounds a lot like abc but ive never been to america haha. i can also speak canto and mandarin
I don't think simply "Chinese" accents can be used for determining whether people are natives or not. ABCs can also have slight accents since they would most likely prefer to speak English at home with their parents who are most likely gonna be immigrants. Edit: First of all, hi to everyone who left a reply! They're super interesting to read :) I shared this comment because I'm ABC and speak Chinese with my parents, and this was actually the reason why my parents preferred to speak with me in Chinese in the first place. I speak in a mix of English and Chinese with my Chinese friends since I find it difficult to explain certain terms that are common in one language to the other or because I might not recall the proper term at that exact moment 😂
@ninja_whale3 жыл бұрын
Highly agree with this. I think this is also interesting in the context of what does "native" sound like, and can we allow that definition to change as demographics change? This is especially interesting to me in the context of the Chinese-X identity and diasporic thoughts that many Chinese-Canadians/Americans around me have expressed at some point :P

Agree, also people from different places in China got different accents, like I speak Uyghur and Mandarin, I clearly feel my accent goes to another way. In Spanish class, other Chinese kids say “Hamburguesa” as “hanbergaisa” but my accent be like “Ghambürrgiasa”.Also you can notice different English accent between cantoneses speakers and Beijingers.
@Commander_HW3 жыл бұрын
actually no, I speak chinese with my parents and chinglish with my chinese friends, then just english to everyone else. I'm from the the northeast part of the china and I don't have that part of the chinese accent(东北口音) anymore, and most ppl thought i'm from the southern part of the china or something. And sometimes it drives me crazy that I can only speak 100% chinese with my parents cuz sometimes I might not be able to explain something just in chinese for example things I have never seen or heard of when I was in china, so I can't explain it in chinese as well, like if you ask me to explain how car loan and mortgage,investments etc then I will not be able to explain it well and my mom will give me that sarcastic look and say " You are chinese! And you can't speak chinese well!!!! 你太让我失望了!"

In Sydney there is a new Asian-Australian accent emerging in certain regions especially in schools that's quite interesting. Some of these people are born and raised in Australia, and mainly or exclusively speak English so they are definitely 'native' speakers and yet they have a distinct but equally valid Australian accent because they grow up with other Asian-Australian friends, so I definitely agree that it's not accurate to use accents alone as something to label people. Language use and accent is a very interesting topic!
@chenwang42783 жыл бұрын
@@Commander_HW "loan" is "貸款“, "mortgage" is “按揭”, and "investment“ is “投資,” all of which are pretty common in China.
