I’ve had my hands in the PlayStation Portal PS5 Remote Player for almost a week now, playing non stop over WiFi and testing differentiate situations to see how it runs…and it might have surprised me.

Love my Portal. I was shocked. My initial impression at the reveal, was “This is horse poop! Why not make a dedicated handheld.” But then I thought about how much I tried remote play on my phone (too small), and iPad (too awkward to use in bed or couch). So I bought the Portal and now I’m finding I’m putting way more time into my PS5 gaming.

Same here, I understand that I love gaming but what I love more is accessibility. The easier it’s for me to play, the more hours I will sink into it. I still have a 4K gaming PC that I’m rarely using because of being on a desk.

Feel the same with remote play on my phone. Steam deck remote play is very good and I was using that, but you get random screen flashes for up to 2 seconds long. I got the portal on day one… the experience in been great. No issues. I’m planing to use in house only, been a dad handheld gaming gives me the freedom I need. Traveling im taking the steam deck.

I don't understand why people aren't just buying a Steam Deck (or other pc handheld) instead. Playing the games natively will give you a much better experience. Not having the video and audio cut out or having the controls wig out for a second making your character do things you don't intend like wasting extra amo. Native is just so much better.

I can't speak on others, but I know personally I don't want to have to dork around with any technical things. I want to turn it on and for it to work. I don't want to have to deal with installing software etc. I know this CAN be easy, but I just want the most streamlined experience. @@bland9876

Awesome video man! I figured out that you can use KZfaq and even sign in on your Portal, but it has to be through your PS5's browser. Unfortunately though, you can't watch videos in full screen and it will be maxed out at 1080p (obviously). It's still cool that it works at least.

The main reason I won’t be getting one is my main use of my current handheld is doctor appointment, and the hospitals have Wi-Fi that needs to be verified by connecting to a browser and putting in a login and password problem though the Portal doesn’t have a browser so it can’t connect to a hot spot like that which is a very common setup for hospitals, schools and businesses. Since it has no native games such as a Switch does if you are in a situation where it can’t connect it becomes useless. I do realize for others it might serve their needs.

Been playing the portal in Tampa while my PS5 is in Orlando using my phone’s hotspot and even playing like that it’s been smooth so this is definitely what I wanted…once I’m back home gameplay is even better and so smooth with no lag using my WiFi at 500 download and 20 upload speeds and my PS5 wired which I think is key to have a solid no lag connection.

I’ve enjoyed my time with my portal so far. Like he’s mentioned a few moments here and there where the stream gets a bit fuzzy and frame drops or what not. It was one night I played 2K, MW3, and Madden back to back. Played until I got the low battery indicator. Always been a fan of remote play and have used the backbone controller with my phone to take advantage of remote play I’ve never been a fan of the having to remove my case to use the backbone(they’ve now fixed this). Depending on my schedule it’s just easier to handheld play my games. The portal isn’t for everyone and that’s cool but I’m glad Sony came out with a dedicated device. Hopefully they can build on this in the future.

I mean, the screen and controller help DRASTICALLY with people who are just in the Sony ecosystem. The biggest issue with remote play devices is the comfort...and the dual sense is imo the best controller to come out this generation. Yes the steam deck OLED can be played offline but i simply do not play games on PC except the insanely rare indie and emulation moments... Portal is for those PS5 only ecosystem players, also being able to grind for trophies/grind for levels in RPG/Combo practicing in Street Fighter and the occasional shooter make this well worth the price as you can do it in complete comfort. If you play multiplatform? get the steam deck OLED..if you're primarily a Sony player? buy the portal..no brainer.

@@bland9876 Is that not dependent on the PC? and ecosystem revolving around friends/Fam whoever playing on PC aswell as exclusives? no im not waiting a year or more to play ps5 exclusives. I have friends who game on PS5 and what you said doesn't fix the cramping problem that comes with playing a handheld..every handheld. this is not a PC vs PS5 convo, this is a what's the PS Portal got that the Steam deck etc don't. If you don't have hand cramping problems and primarily play on PC then easily the deck is the choice simple as that..
@bland9876
@bland9876 7 ай бұрын
@@shownon there are PS5 exclusives? Are you sure your not thinking about Nintendo? As far as I. Aware they are the only one with exclusives anymore. The Deck is actually designed to not cramp your hand unlike the Switch infact most PC handhelds are designed not to cramp your hand. If your friend ar buying PS5s instead of steam Decks (no idea why they would) then you can still cross platform play with them. Fortnite being the most famous example. Ps Spider-Man and Uncharted run amazing on the Deck.

@@bland9876 No my point is i 98% of the time i play my games on PS5, I don't like playing on PC unless it's to emulate. Steam Deck no doubt is a phenomenal device but having tried it i can't go long with it withour cramping my hands albiet i can go AWHILE(friend let me borrow his for a couple days) on it but jumping from dual sense to the Steam deck is a big jump. Dual sense feels like home, having the 8 inch screen build in etc just makes this an instant buy for me, especially being an rpg/fighting game head.

Another important thing is that Sony is also forcing you to buy their earplugs/ headphones because apparently, in your future, Bluetooth is not a good thing. If you want a device that can do remote play and also play games, there are a lot of handled devices around. Valve just release the Steam Deck OLED. Plus if it supports 120hz might make things better, for example playing fortnite at 120hz on a tv is very noticeable on how bad it looks. But on my Fold 5.... I don't think we should encourage overpriced bad products because they are ''good enough''

Adding some kind of improved near-location casting, like WiiU, including an actual case, Bluetooh audio, better speakers, an OLED screen, letting it run some basic video streaming apps and the like, Sony could have done more to justify the cost, or even increase it. But even a positive review is a hard sell for what it does, and more importantly doesn’t, do.

When the Pulse Elite and Explorer were announced with the portal. I thought the PlayStation portal was Sony's new stupid idea and I didn't consider it after a while seeing sky high prices on eBay. I definitely pulled the trigger and got one at MSRP in my local Best Buy. I picked it up yesterday morning played last night and so far. I've got a great harmonious experience. The gameplay has been amazing I get to play in my bed. And if I have my mother's friends visiting or family and they're all in the living room taking over the TV. I can also play it in my mom's room so far. I have enjoyed my PlayStation portal. Just keep in mind. This is not a standalone device that offers you stand alone gameplay. You do require a decently strong internet connection to play your games and you'll be able to play every single game of your digital library. And that one disc you left inside your PlayStation 5. If you have the disc version do I recommend it? Yes, I do if you understand thoroughly what the PlayStation portal is and what it does and no if your intentions are to do portable gaming everywhere, then I'd recommend you any of the portable gaming PCs out there like the one made by Valve and Asus including Lenovo or just pick up a Nintendo switch

@@bland9876 damn dude, you’re obsessed with telling everyone to get a steam deck. You really don’t have to reply to every single comment. There are several reasons why someone may want a portal instead of a steam deck. The Playstation Portal would be awesome, if it was released back in late 90s or early 2000. Since technology in that time frame was not multi-purpose use and just one dedicated device Printing, scanning, faxing and photocopying were all separate products in 80s and 90s. Now they all in one products with wireless connect technology capabilities. Don't get wrong Playstation portal doesn't need to be all-one product, but could had use some more innovation. Some examples, 1)New Playstation 5 Slim with Wifi 6 technology included aswell with new release of Playstation portal. No internet required to play inside the home (connect wifi6). 2)Micro SD card expansion for retro gaming download service of top 25, PSP ,PS1,and PS2 (offline play). 3) A Real Offline portable device and with some features that work without needing internet to function.

If it could use other streaming services then I think it would be a must buy, especially at its current price point. As it is though I think for most people something like the Logitech G Cloud would be a better choice as not only can it stream from your PS5 console but from PSN Premium, Microsoft's XCloud, from your PC. Not to mention the G Cloud is also a capable Android tablet. The G Cloud might cost more than the Portal but with all the extra stuff it can do, I think it's probably better value.

I love my portal. Have been giving me the opportunity to continue to play my system when not in my room or home. I have not had any real issue. Sony gains nothing by making a stand alone handheld, in fact they lose. All it will do was take away ps5 potential customers. It will bring out the same games for both systems which just becomes more work and not that much of a gain. That’s why Nintendo did what they did by making their home entertainment system also portal. To not lose customers one way or the other.
