For a 5-6 years old camera, the 5D4 holds pretty well over time. Yes, it's older and it's normal that new cameras get better and better. But the 5D4 is still a serious camera.

I would say an used 5D4 is the best deal today. Money vs performance is best. I would not worry about RF lenses. Even so, EF lenses should sell pretty cheap soon.

My main camera is the Canon R5. Unfortunately I had to send it in for repairs due to a loose hot shoe. My 2nd camera is a 5Dmk4, but I decided to buy an R6 because the mirrorless AF/live view is just great. After shooting w/ the R6 for 2 weeks daily I am happy about everything except for the resolution. I think this camera is made for people who mainly shoot web-content. If my clients want to do print ads etc, I grab the 5d4 purely for the resolution.

I own both, and even though I love the great features of the R6 over the 5DMK4, I'm keeping both. The 5DMK4 is a war horse build to last and I'm used to its buttons, dials and wheels. It's been a great camera for 3 yrs for me.. But I also have to admit that the focusing system, the eye detection, the EVF, and the flip screen of the R6 are game changers for me. Thanks for the good video 👍

@juanjaramillo1854
@juanjaramillo1854 3 жыл бұрын
@@seancoombes3446 - Hi Sean. All I have is EF "L" lenses and they all work flawlessly with the adapter. Focusing is fast and accurate, I would say this was the feature that appealed me the most when I rented the R6 before I bought it. I'd advice you to rent it first if your in doubt but I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I was debating between the R5 and the R6 just because of the sensor resolution as 20MP were not too appealing to me, but I have not had any issues with it and I have done some (moderate) cropping with my pictures with great results. Well, I could go on but I think this answers you question, Sean. The R6, in my opinion, is superior to the 5DMK4 I've been using for several years and I simply love it. Hope this helps and I if you need any extra info, I'll be more than happy to help. Good luck 👍

How do you feel about the image quality and the difference in resolution? Does the noise level and sharpness of the R6 compensate for the drop from 30 to 20 Mpx?
@juanjaramillo1854
@juanjaramillo1854 Жыл бұрын
@@muresansergiubohdan - At the time I'm responding to this question, I no longer have the 5DMK4, I sold it as I completely transitioned to mirrorless. I continue to use the R6 and, in relation to your question, I don't miss/need the extra 10 Mpxs of the 5DMK4. I still regard that camera as a great one but the DSLR days are gone for me. The R6 has always met my expectations in sharpness, noise and low light conditions, pretty much in every field except in one: cropping from a far subject like birds. To compensate, I bought a canon 100-400 mm L lens with a 1.4x teleconverter and results have been fantastic. There was a time I felt tempted to get the R5 because of this reason, but as somebody wisely wrote somewhere in a video comment here..."you don't need to get another camera, you just need to get closer". That comment made me change my mind and saved me about $2000 dollars...I have not regretted doing so 😉

Thanks for that comparison. Ultimately, your first question is if you need to make any changes. If you've mastered your 5D and you're getting the results you need, put the wallet back in your pocket. If you're a pro and you do a lot of video, perhaps the 5D is now your back up camera. As a pro once told me: 'there's a lot of expensive equipment out there capturing mediocre images'. Yes, it is refreshing to see Canon finally innovating again (thanks to Sony), and with competition intensifying, it means innovate or die. So, the R6 you have now will probably get to the '5D phase' a lot sooner than your 5D did. With Sony discounting their models on a regular basis, you can bet the R6 (and R5) will be declining in price too...and more than 300.00. So if you don't really need it right now...be patient. In the meantime, let's see what Canon does with the R3 !!

I'm not so sure about that price development. I own my 5D mark IV three years now, and the price difference between what I paid and the price now is € 200,- The R6 stayed on the same price level pretty much the whole first year. I think Canon is counting on the loyalty of users just because they already own the glass. (Although with that in mind I feel they should have thrown in that EF-RF-adapter for free). I for one are still using my EF lenses and I don't plan on replacing them since I think they are absolutely wonderful and I still use the 5D IV alongside the R6...

For me, it's not a close comparison at all. The thing is, with the R6 I get image stabilization with my old EF 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2, makin them so much more useful for me. Also, the autofocus is just amazing compared to the 5D series. Both these big-aperture lenses were really hard to focus correctly, as the focus plane is extremely thin, and it is curved. Now with this excellent AF, I get perfect in-focus shots across the entire frame 99% of the time. The improvement here is simply massive. As a stills photographer, there is no question at all which one to get.

Really appreciate this. I've got/love my 5Div as my primary body with a 7Dii as the backup. I've found that I never pick up the 7Dii anymore - for me, the 5Div does a better job in all areas of my photography (birding, airshows, dog shows, watersports). Because of this, I thought it might be a good time to step into the mirrorless world IF the new body would be complementary to the 5Div or vice versa. From what I've read and what I saw in the vid - that isn't really the case with the R6. In many ways, they sound like they are very similar. With the exception of the autofocus, the pluses for the R6 aren't game changers for me, which makes me think that at the current price point, the R6 isn't a good investment for me.

While Canon don't recommend 'dangling a camera by fingertips', they recognize this dangling as an important factor for comfort. So, Canon has been designing their cameras considering many situations which includes dangling the camera by only one middle finger. 'Canon Imaging Plaza' channel told this point in their video on March 1, 2021. I think R6 isn't a successor of 6Ds, but real sibling of R5.

What usually works is loosely wrapping the neck strap around your wrist, while 'dangling' the camera in your hand. I never had a situation where the camera actually dropped on the floor, but I did have a slip on a stair case covered in moss, where my immediate reaction was to hold camera close to my body, bruising my shoulder. So I guess it's part of the initiation process on walking around with a camera. I personally hate using neck straps, it's fatiguing after a day's walk.

If you're a hybrid shooter the R6 is a no brainer. But if you focus mostly on photos the 5D mkIV, to me, still has the edge. I own both and the R6 feels like a toy, I don't like the button displacement (and the size of rear dial), the lack of a top display and the cheap feel of the body. I also like more the optical viewfinder over the electronic one. Sure, AF is inferior in the 5D, but, to me it's not that much of a difference all in all, unless you use servo most of the times. It's also important to consider that if you use EF lenses they're gonna feel really unbalanced on the R6 because the adapter. Last but not least: if you use adobe softwares and you also like the look of canon camera colors or, like me, you start to process from one of the camera colors, you're gonna be disappointed because there's no support by today and it's likely there's never going to be any. You'll be forced to process R6 raw files starting from adobe proprietary color profiles, for some people it's not a problem but this is something worth to mention. By today the only R camera that has this feature on abode softwares is the R. So, well, I'm keeping both bodies but as my main camera I still use the 5D, but consider that I shoot mostly stills. The R6 is my backup body for perfect AF needs and excellent high iso performances

Try the 5D4 in live view and you will see that the focus is on par with R6. At least for stills. For videos it won't make much of a difference either. When using the optical viewfinder focus you are actually using a 20+ year old technology and cannot expect spectacular results.

Thanks for the information, it was interesting hearing your take on this current photographic dilemma. I also spent a large part of my photographic life as a sports photographer. The difference is that when I started in photography there was not even autofocus never mind digital. The way of the future is without a doubt mirrorless, but DSLR's still have some life left. Probably because am really old, I still prefer the naked image in the DSLR viewfinder. There is one point you did fail to mention. The cost of new glass. Canon RF lenses have more than doubled in price over Canon EF lenses. Also the R3 will be out in a couple months. If the rumors are correct. The current pricing of the R5 is about a grand too high.

In testing a Canon R6 I was very impressed with it's capability's. So I rented one for a video shoot, it shortly ended up back in my camera bag. It automatically stoped recording after about 3 minutes in 1080P, the video screen kept blacking out off and on, and auto focus was off target. The next day I tried it again before returning it, and everything worked fine. It may have been operator error, or just a spastic R6. One disappointment is that doesn't give you the All-I option in 1080P.

One thing to keep in mind is while mirrorless cameras are great for simulating exposure before you take the shot you do need to be cognizant of the settings because in my experience when I'm under extreme fast moments, you can crank up your iso to increase exposure without realizing you turned it enormously because it's doesn't stimulate noise. Or if you turn down shutter speed too low and your subject is too blurry due to subject motion or camera shake since the simulation cannot approximate that

Thanks for taking time and compare these to great cameras! It's totally valid comparison for people who have FF DSLR and think to upgrade to FF mirrorless. If I have 5D Mark 4, I rather stay with it. But if I necessary need to upgrade for any reason, I would go with mirrorless. So in my case, I have 11 years old DSLR crop body and decide to upgrade. I just purchased both Canon factory refurbished R6 on holiday discount for $1700 and Canon RF24-105 L 4f lens for $720 from Canon online store. BTW, I believe with a new Canon R6 firmware upgrade there's no overheating issue anymore.

Thanks for this! Many reviewers don’t realize that this is a dilemma for consumers looking to upgrade from canon aps-c because of the identical price alone. Many reviewers understandably pit the 5D against the R5, but for me that’s just not an option: I wouldn’t have considered the 5D were it not for the recent price drop. Also, many of us don’t have a single deciding factor like ‘if you do video, obviously the R6’. It’s more like: ‘if I got the R6, I might get into video more’. Thank you for this short and very effective comparison. I've been a 5DMk4-shooter for almost five years and I just recently (two weeks ago) bought the R6. Don't miss the "missing" 10 MPs at all, love the increased lowlight quality - and the new autofocus just blows me away. From my point of view your result (12 by 10) looks too close because I give by far the most weight on the AF. So for me the R6 is the way better camera although I love my heavy duty 5D4 with more than 400.000 shots and no issue at all. Will never sell it and still use it for studio work or good daylight conditions. But the R6 will be my new workhorse - may it wind up as solid as the 5D4.

@@kingofpresets8437 Hi, thank you for the question. Unfortunately I can't answer it because I haven't tested the difference in skin tones yet. And I doubt that I will do this in the future because I don't feel the need for comparisons. Maybe because there is no big difference. And picture profiles? Tell me if I'm wrong, but I think those are important for capturing videos only. As I really never do this, it's not relevant for me and I can't answer this question either. Sorry for not being as helpful as you hoped, but over all I'm more interested in capturing moments than checking technical details. What I actually prefer in a camera is a certain ruggedness, good ergonomics, and a fast and accurate autofocus. That's what I got with the R6. Have a nice day :-)

I have found that because of the rolling shutter with electric shutter and waking time of the electronic view finder, I use my R6 as a second body. My 1DX is always ready to fire. I find that the auto tracking of the R6 is good, but sometimes jumps to other people in the action. And I always worry about my R6 in bad weather, where as I never worry about my 1DX with tough weather.

BUT my R6 died of Error 70 on its first wedding. So it went back to be replaced. I haven’t opened the new R7 bod yet as it came yesterday… CLOG3 10bit ruins the computer so it’s Proxy time.

Thank you for making this comparison video! I'm a live music photographer that wants to spread out into broader event coverage. My main work is in graphic design and painting miniature figurines, so I'd just been using the same Pentax K-m/K-2000 and its two kit lenses (my mom bought for the family back in 2009 😅) for the past 13 years. When the pandemic hit, I was 2 years into (finally) covering concerts professionally. I shot my first show back this past October, but that gig drought made me realize that I had outgrown that old Pentax. Suddenly, luck struck this holiday season, and I had the opportunity to afford a new camera rig from scratch! My gig photo colleagues were keen on both of these models (even a Sony loyalist said so!), so your video right here sealed the deal for me! I've had the R6 for about six weeks now, and even just practicing with it on product photos for my miniatures has been everything I was hoping for. Can't wait to take this with my f/2.8 zooms to my first 2022 live shows next month!

@@sylvoniaa Hey Pixie, if the question was meant to be directed to me, then I do not think 5D4 is bad camera whatsoever, but the R6 has autofocus advantage, tilting screen - big advantage for video, but I found myself using it super often for stills too. Just the reality of not having to manually choose autofocus point no more is a huge plus for me. Honestly since upgrading from 6D it is like day and night shooting experience. The tilting display is perfect for low angle shots of smaller dog breeds like ours are, and eye-level photography of kids is great with it as well, I barely ever use viewfinder now. Overall, if the budget is not a limiting factor, I would go for R6 any day over DSLR. Good luck choosing the right machine.

It's weird that Image Quality wasn't on your list. For me that's the most important factor. I find the 5D series produce nicer looking images than than the R series. I literally sold my R5 and bought back a 5D mk3 because of this reason.
@kevinraposo

the term 'image quality' is highly subjective. I disagree with your assessment, and prefer the image quality coming out of my R6. how would I assign a point to a category based on personal opinion? much more effective to break down 'image quality' as a combination of sensor size, megapixels, dynamic range, rolling shutter, low-light performance, and lens options, all of which were individually referenced in this video
@ihateunicorns867
@ihateunicorns867 3 ай бұрын
@@kevinraposo Those things are definitely valuable things to know about, but they aren't what I'm talking about. If you judge a camera by dynamic range, low-light performance, rolling shutter etc, Leica would come bottom of the list. I don't think it's entirely subjective, but it is arguably a hard thing to quantify. Maybe it's just me. I largely prefer the EF primes to the RF ones too. I have the RF 50mm f/1.2L and while it's optical 'perfect', it lacks the character of its EF counterpart (despite the softness and chromatic aberration). It's like if I took a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 and shot it at F/4 at 35mm, and I took the EF 35mm f/1.4L and shot it at the same settings, the Tamron would be sharper, cleaner, with less distortion, less vignetting etc. But the 35mm L lens would produce a nicer image. Why is it better? I couldn't break it down to explain it. It kind of just… is.

Also the less megapixels of the R6 means a large pixel pitch which would result in better low light performance. This might help in the real estate photos as it's quite dark. Also it might help with sports as you can then boost the ISO higher and thus maintain a fast shutter speed.

I will say that while I do not really like change, the wonderful AF system of the R6 is tempting me. While most of what I do now is indoors (girls volleyball and dance competitions), we still do quite a bit of baseball/softball, lacrosse, and a couple horse shows. I wasn't sure if switching to the R6 would make sense since it is the same MP as the 6D. After looking at the high ISO performance and video quality you provided, it's sold me. I don't need R5 level stills for most of my work so this looks like a great fit. Well that's weird. I've used the MK IV, R and currently the R6. The focusing isn't even close and the video just destroys the MK IV. The ISO performance is way better and my workflow is way faster due to smaller files and dual SD cards. Even though the images have lower megapixel the images are sharper. I could easily under expose 3 stops and not worry about anything (even at high ISO). I rarely miss focus and damn that 12 fps and nearly unlimited buffer is sweet. RF lenses are amazing, used the 100-500 loved it. I've seen a lot of EOS R and MK IV user switched and they haven't regretted a bit. Wonder where the few people you said are from DPreview or Reddit? Anyway I tried googling I and I found non lol. Give me a reddit link or any forum link then.

Of all the features mentioned, the 3 that matter the most to me as wish they had it are on-demand video after other shooting (no surprise video shutdown), a built in GPS, and use in hostile weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures. Not a single Canon camera has ever met these 3 requirements, only 2/3 at best. As time passes and my photography becomes more of a recreational choice rather than a professional requirement, I find a calling to other modern image capture technologies.

You can do this with 5dm4 too using AF point selection Button just a trick for some one who does not know. @@Teightrsalad My guy, what does that have to do with anything? He said the rf mount is the future, and that was a response to that. While it may be the future mounting system, it has very little to do with the present with the amount of ef lenses on the market new and used is insane. What does that mean? really good prices because of the abundance. We are also still talking about the 5d mark iv vs the r6 as the center point and that being the reason to upgrade. I personally dont think that the rf mount being the future is reason enough to upgrade to the r6, I am sure many opinions differ and that is fine. if dropping that amount on a new camera is justifiable by you based on image quality if that is your primary use of the camera, or video abilities then by all means go for it. When I make a major investment, I usually make sure that it isnt an incremental upgrade for my use. If we are talking picture quality and that is the main reason to upgrade then it most definitely falls short of that mark. Not saying that the 5d has a better picture, But if it is still good enough for the majority of photographers then why upgrade? The picture quality improvement is negligible, and I dont find the r6 an adequate upgrade to the 5d mark iv if that is ur current shooter. That would go to the r5 and I think that would be a more worthy upgrade. At the end of the day if the r6 checks the boxes for you and improves your daily life then go for it. There is obviously a market for the camera. I personally think it is more of an upgrade for someone on something other then a 5d mark iv, but not for a current owner of one, unless you do a lot of video, and I would still go for the r5 if that was the case, as its price point is close to what the 5d mark iv was at release, and a 5 series.

I recently got a 6D Mk II as a second camera for when I am shooting with my 5D MK IV and took it out on it's first serious shoot on a November morning outside in the pouring rain, on the 5D I had a 70 -200 and the 6D had a 24 -70, I hardly touched the 6D all morning and shot virtually everything on the 5D, both cameras had Think Tank rain covers on so I was happy that they were not getting the full force of the weather and the 5D performed fantastically as it always has under conditions like this, the 6D however didn't, it started behaving eratically, functions wouldn't work and it quickly packed up all together, I thought it had bricked so I was looking at an expensive morning, fortunately, after two days drying out it was back up and working perfectly but I will never try to use it in the rain again, even with what I think is the best rain cover on the market. If the R6 has the same weather sealing as the 6D, I could never trust it to work in the conditions I often shoot in, luckily I kept my old 5D MK II so I always have a second camera I can really trust as a back up.

I can tell you that I have shot with the R6 under light rain without issue, but I do not believe the weather-sealing is as robust as the 5D4. I probably wouldn't feel comfortable keeping it out in a torrential downpour

I still use my ancient 5d3 for stills. Tried a bunch of Sony cameras. I really cannot give up the canon color science. May want to switch to r6 or r5 this year.

The picture play button on the right side! FINALLY!!!!!! It was a pain to use the left hand to it! Sound's silly, but it is a big deal to me. On my Canon Mk2 and GH5.

The autofocus on the R6 completely destroys the 5D though.

You hear this a lot when talking about the R6. Might be a deal breaker if your work goes on billboard. My main work is with billboard companies. I shoot things in RAW on my 90D and send to to the printers in JPG around 6MB. So unless the images coming out of the R6 are lower resolution than that it won’t be a problem.

I own a 5d mk4 and have only recently gotten into video within the last 2 years. The video quality while still usable, compared to any similar camera released after 2017 the video quality is significantly worse. Even at its most optimal iso setting in video, the quality is not sharp at all. 10/10 in the photo category though lol my only complaint would be the dynamic range but I mean it’s a camera from 2016 and is still a beast of a camera

can't say I agree, I was very happy with the quality of the 4K footage I was getting out of the 5D MK4 with C-Log. but yes, the R6 and now the R6 Mark II are substantially better

5DmkIV was originally a $3499 camera and has decreased in price as it got older. R5 is the spiritual successor to the 5d series and is priced more closely to the original launch price of the 5D mk IV. If Canon had launched a 5Dmk V it would have likely been $3499. The R5 is the comparable R camera to the 5D series and it skull bashes the dinosaur 5D mk IV.

In newer technology and features? yes But in picture quality? I have the 5d mark iv, and a friend has the r5. I have seen a few things that are a tad better but nothing worth writing home about. If i were to upgrade it would def be the r5, most def not the r6. I dont feel like you are getting enough, sure people are gonna say well it has this and has that, sure, but if i want to upgrade from the 5d the only suitable upgrade is the r5. I agree that it is an excellent camera, but at the end of the day it depends on what you use ur camera for and does that justify the cost. For many yes, but for me atm no. I want to add if u dont own any of these 3 cameras and u are amateur or even pro photographer, amd the r6 meets ur check list then by all means get the r6 dont throw extra money around that can be used for lens , memory cards or other misc, equipment u need. I just think for most that have the 5d mark iv it is not enough of an upgrade as i dont even see it as the successor. That is the r5. Wanted to clear that up as it may have come off that i am totally against the r6.

@@reality150tv That is fair, if you don't see the value, by all means do not spend the money. It is priced very near what the original 5D mk IV was priced at and using your own argument the 5D mk IV wasn't "worth" the upgrade over the 5D mk III either. The 5D mk IV made lesser spec jumps over the mk III than the R5 does over the 5DIV : 22mp to 30mp DIGIC 4 to DIGIC 6, 6fps to 7 fps, better dynamic range and a modest improvement to AF. 5D mk IV to R5: 30mp to 45mp and 7fps to 12 fps (20 electronic) significant DIGIC 6 to DIGIC X, AF difference is monumental R5 is best focusing system canon ever made. The R5 could very well be the best CANON body in the entire digital era as it compares to the competition at launch. Like all things technological, the R5 will soon be "OLD" and that is alway frustrating, I skipped over the 5D mk IV and just kept my Mk III waiting for Canon to launch a mirrorless, the EOS R I bought was OK liked it better in some ways in others not. But my R5, absolutely no regrets, best camera I ever owned save for my 1986 Canon T90 which honestly at that time felt just as bad ass then as this R5 does today.

@@RealtorRod64 5d4 is a huge leap in DR over 5d3 at a time when canon was waaaay behind nikon and sony. you both make good points. i'm reluctant but the 14-35 will hasten my purchase of R5 ;-)
