Man, tires held up like there was no weight on it, the arch didn't sag at all, it stayed balanced and didn't flip the tractor. That is well built log arch. New winch and this thing will be perfect. Nice coffee mug in the background.

Kevin looked good. Might want to add a inverted V at front of arch to catch front end of log to keep it aligned. Also keep your toes out from under that log while holding with only the cable. If something lets go you won't get much of a warning. Maybe upgrade to larger cable just for piece of mind. Where cable goes over pulley is where the most stress is I would think. Good luck Ed

Kevin, having the winch cable looped around the log puts a lot of drag on the winch effort. If you use a wrap of chain around the log and do a straight lift with the cable, you will find it much easier. i would also reduce the height of the arch or as one other person suggested, have removable cross bar at the axle spindles to reduce the center of gravity. Good showing for a first time.

Hi, actually that is not correct. A straight run from winch to log over single pulleys only changes load direction and means the winch load is equal to the log load in dynamic lift. The way he did it (cable around log then back to frame) cuts the winch load in half, and is 25% less stress on the arch at the pulley supporting the cable because the log acts like a 2nd pulley in the system. Now I'm sure there is some friction tension developed as the log is not a true smooth pulley, so it not going to be exactly half. I just did a test in shop. With steel cylinder (simulated log), with straight run vs wrap. Wrap is 45% less load on the winch. In theory is should be %50 less but with friction losses its 45%. Now, in reality, if the log is not well rounded and not.straight, trying to turn it with the cable will cause greater resistance, but that is not likely to overcome 45% force reduction before the cable just slides across the log. This is the power of pulleys. They are awesome. The more you add.the less forces needed for same load but you need a lot more cable takup to move the load the same distance. Do the cable.wrap and your winch will last longer as its sees only about half the load being lifted.

I understand your theory however the friction of the cable laying on the wood will generate more friction while cutting into the bark. Another way is to pick up the log with a grapple on the end of the cable or, use a tackle with the grapple. @@mrpush2532

Great job Kevin! I saw the log rolling as you lifted it. If it stayed stable on the lift it would be faster and safer. You might move the roller bracket to the center and use a strap with eyes to go around the log. This would lift the log up with no rolling. A cheap 12v winch would also be cool. Just thinking... God bless TEXAS and long live the Republic!

I wonder if you could extend it, 16 feet is a long log. Be nice to have some tongue weight on the tractor. Those Binders are a good idea, I was afraid the cables couldn’t take the weight bouncing around, but the Binders took care of that. Good job, enjoyed the show.

You selected a very big log for it's first test and it did great. I expected that to be the case. When you build something you always build it right. A few tweaks and you've reached perfection....or very close to it :) It seems like it will perform for you very well. You sure build some awesome stuff! Thanks for sharing. Be well.

Once you got the weight and balance thing figured out it works great. Keeping the logs as clean as possible will really help the mils bands stay sharper a lot. You did a great job at reinforcing the arch. You could put an electric winch powered by a deep cycle Optima battery mounted up on the reach by the toolbox. A simple plugin from the tractors charging system should do fine keeping the battery up. Well done fella ! ! ! A 3500 lb winch has a larger 5/16 cable as well.

I was just hoping the winch would hold but it appears not going to. You may want to consider a ATV 2000 lb winch as you they are electric and would require a battery source. But you could wire into Kubota system.

If you are truly worried about the thing tipping over what you might do this after the log is up in the air put another pipe from one wheel hub to the other then let the log down on that pipe and that will lower the center of gravity.

Should really shut off the annoying tractor. Im sure once you turn the heavy end toward the tractor it will be mint. That’s heavy, I wonder if you can trust that skinny cable not to snap in time. My 4 wheel winch has a rope, nicer to work with than the cable. Im in the market for the same thing, I will consider this model. Thanks!
