In regards to Mando second season, I'll admit; I loved the Luke scene from an emotional, cathartic perspective. But I do agree it doesn't make a lick of sense from what I've heard. It's why while I'm not against fan service in general, as mentioned in my past comment I recognize it can be very hollow given how the lack of effort/ work was put into having earned the said payoff. Heck, to use a food analogy; it's like being served a Big Mac. Yeah, that Big Mac might fill your appetite, especially if you have been given crap/ not eaten. But it isn't the same as a home-cooked meal or something made by a professional chef who made something whose taste/flavor gets better with each bite and will forever stay with you. And that's what I argue is what separates good from great fan service and writing in general.

One nit pick: The milk way is estimated to be larger than the average galaxy, I think, so the astronomical size of the Star Wars galaxy may be slightly less astronomical. Doesn't discredit any of your points though.
@LightningNC3 жыл бұрын
The Star Wars galaxy is actually slightly larger than the Milky Way. The EU put it at 120,000 light years in diameter, and D*sney (which just plunders details from the EU sooner or later anyway) had only specified that it's "more than 100,000 light years."

Even writing just a good story is a lot harder than people think. I get it, but that’s why there’s a high bar to objectivity to begin with; it’s to push people and get them motivated and let their creative side run wild, but keep it tempered, sensible, and believable. That’s why the late 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s had so many movies we all love to this day; projects that had genuine creativity and ambition. And here we are today, where ‘key jangling’ is such a staple because they know their movies will never meet the quality of the originals, so they have to ride the wave to keep themselves relevant

Key jangling is really a good way to describe it. The entire plot of the Battlestar Galactica (2003-2009) is more likely to have happened than Luke showing up at the moment he did. Luke would have had to have been in the exact direction that the star destroyer was heading for that to happen the way it did because the signal he got was on the planet. The odds of that happening in a single small town are low, let alone a fucking galaxy.

@Avarn3883 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you made this Fringy because I was just thinking about this as an aspiring writer. For me, the best kind of fan service should come in service to details/ elements that are already in place and in turn serve as payoff via a chekoff's gun. What do I mean by this? Well, let me use an example: My Hero Academia. There will be MANGA SPOILERS for the series so if you are anime onlys, you might want to avoid this. There was a moment during the current arc of My Hero where Bakugou Katsuki pushes Midoriya out of the way to save him from All From One and we get a homage where Bakugou says quote "My body moved on its own". This calling back to the first arc of My Hero Academia where Midoriya did the same to save Bakugou. Why this moment was so good was due to a few reasons. One is that it represents the capstone of Bakugou's character arc. While starting off as a bully, Bakugou clearly throughout the series has moved away and taken on the traits of Midoriya. You saw this directly with how he was assessing Shoto's abilities during the Sports Festival arc of the second season but also very subtly as shown in the fourth season when he convinced the arrogant kid to not look down upon others. This in reference to Midoriya's own ability to connect with kids as shown with Kota and Eri, respectively. And in turn Horikoshi does a phenomenal job tying this all together with Bakugou expressing finding something that he lacks and his conversation with All Might and how he admits he picked on Midoriya due to his own weakness. Something that was showcased throughout the first two seasons with him being so frustrated at Midoriya/ angry and even the third season with Bakugou admitting he feels lost due to seeing Midoriya grow so quickly. Combine that with the monologue earlier in the arc where Bakugou reaffirms he'll keep pushing himself in spite of Midoriya's growing power and that he'll be number one, the moment of Bakugou's self-sacrifice wasn't something that came out of nowhere. It took the details I mentioned above and gave a worthwhile pay off that was logical in terms of utilizing the past details strung throughout the past arcs/ seasons BUT also emotionally resonates given it is the capstone of Horikoshi's efforts to recontexualize Bakugou's past actions and thus adding necessary context. (SPOILERS END) In short, that bit of fan service showcased in My Hero for me really is such a great example because the details are such layered and in turn it is logically established given how Horikoshi reminds the readers and isn't out of left field.

I have been saying this for months: The Mandalorian dangles pretty nostalgia (and an Ewok/porg hybrid for cuteness) in front of y’all’s faces and you gave up the cause to give Disney money for a subpar effort. It’s like World of Warcraft players idolizing the Mists of Pandaria expansion because “it wasn’t as bad as everything else that came after it”. And before you say “b-but I’m pirating the show, I’m stealing from the rich to give to the lazy. That makes my slavish devotion to memberberries totes okay”, let me just say that 1) Disney pays Gina Carano and therefore you’re robbing (and not truly supporting) her, and 2) all the praise you keep giving it is helping Disney in the long run.
