how does it handle offshore rough stuff?

Hi,i did find Spira just few days ago and i love his boat desings. I was planning to get 18` carolinian but then i found out that spira aint with us anymore. Do you have plans in PDF? is there anyway that you could send them to me?? I really would like to build this boat and take my wife and kids on to water. Thx in advance,from Finland

I had a 115 4 stroke and it’s a little too heavy. A 70 4 stroke or a 90 2 stroke would probably be better. A 50 would be too small in my opinion. I built this same boat.

Many use this with motors as small as 40 hp and they'll get up on a plane with 6 people aboard and that motor. Personally I'd use a 50 - 75 or so as ideal unless I was using with with maximum loads. The one with the 40 doesn't plane with 15 people aboard, but it still semi displaces.

@@tjkid07 I didn’t realize that it was a 24 foot boat when I posted my comments so I edited my post. I am considering a 19 to 21 footer and the cost of the motor and trailer and the most cost effective being around a 40 hp motor and build a trailer too fit the boat using an old used trailer. I am kind of stuck with the question of would a19 be big enough and would the 21 be more than I need for 2 people and a dog?

@@drumminsonlive9199 were I live in Louisiana if you build a boat under 20ft in this style with no floatation it’s an illegal boat. Check the regulations in your area.

I don't see any splash coming over the side. Why do you think it needs one?

Because the water is traveling all the way up the side of the hull to the rail... “WET BOAT”

I watched a slow motion play of the side outboard view of the cut water traveling up the side of the boat. At first I thought a splash rail would be useful and a good addition. But then I changed my mind. A spray rail addition would not be beneficial and may be detrimental. After watching how the water travels up the side of the hull, then hits the overhanging top rail, I saw the whole water stream get bent sideways and away from the boat. It looks like to me, we are getting what amounts to a hydraulically extended spray rail. The water hits the top rail, and is directed outboard in a fairly thick boundary layer stream. As such, it is forming an umbrella and capturing all of the smaller spray drops which are then carried out and away from the boat, looks kinda weird and wet, but actually is working demonstratively well at keeping the boat dry. I find this to be a good demonstration of how Phil Bolger was describing the lifting and energy efficiency of a flat bottom over a “V” bottom. He was talking about as the boat moves forward, it is directing the water pressure (energy) down under the boat and generating hull lift vs a “v” bottom spilling water (lift) and associated energy out to the side, thus losing energy and lift and describing how the shape of the forward “rocker” is important in relation to the side shape in containing and redirecting that water pressure energy vertically down into the water column instead of out to the side. The water moving up the side of the hull demonstrates the amount of energy (fuel) being lost to push the boat forward, up to the top of and through the water. The escaping water is energy and water pressure spilling out to the side of the boat instead of being directed under it. Basically, that spray is wasted horsepower and fuel.
