I partnered with Home Depot to show the Schlage connect keyless door lock. I show the keyless deadbolt installation on my own door and also answer the top 5 questions I got about the Schlage smart door lock. As a teaser the 5 questions were about the battery, override, wireless, security, and hacking. #smarthome #keyless #smartlock

I love the idea of using that little forsner bit you used at 2:09.. very clever. And those long screws also are a great idea. I didn't realise that Schlage make 'finger print resistent' door locks. Excellent video. Thank you!

Spot on! The key thing you mention here is if the deadbolt does NOT move freely this will SERISOULY affect battery life! I have this paired with the Ring alarm and works flawless! I have read SO many reviews saying battery life was 2months or less and that is because the lock is not "smooth"! On my main entry door that "cycles" at least twice (sometimes more) a day I have gotten a good solid 13months and just replaced the batteries before they got too weak before they needed to be replaced. Battery replacement is also VERY easy and does NOT require a re-pair to your hub or alarm system. I got this on "sale" for 169.00 almost 2years ago. Works great! As you stated it may require "special" tools to install as my install also required work and alterations using the EXTRA long screws that further increase the "kick-in" factor. Using the "standard" screws that are only a 1/2" to 3/8" long is WAY easy to "kick" these in! Using the 2 1/2" or 3" screws going into a stud makes it WAY harder to simply "kick" in. Great review!

I’ve been using the Schlage Connect for the over 3 years. Best smart lock out there. And I’ve tried the August and Kwikset Kevo. One thing about the Schlage’s battery life. On my main door where it gets used daily, the batteries lasted about 26 months before I had to replace them.

Is it ok to use original strike plate ?
@ONI1013.
@ONI1013. 4 жыл бұрын
Inquisitve m - Yes it is, as most strike plates are virtually identical in size. But you have to make sure the dead bolt clears the hole CLEANLY and easily. If there’s _any_ resistance when locking/unlocking the dead bolt, you need to adjust or shave the strike plate a little - or else the batteries will get drained very quickly or the motor will eventually get worn out. I used a Dremel to adjust my door frame and strike plate easily. Lastly, one thing to note, if you do use your own strike plate, you may not be getting the same security Grade 1 rating, as the Schlage strike plates uses the extra long 3 in screws.

@ONI1013. 2 жыл бұрын
@@tryphena2691 - Wow. One of our doors we use at least 20-30 times per day, and that one has lasted at least 18 months and still going. Perhaps your traffic is very high? Also, as we try to manually lock the doors ourselves when coming home (and even though it’s set on an auto lock timer), just to preserve battery life.

I really like the Schlage Connect except my zwave doesn’t work. I have 3 and only got 1 to connect to my SmartThings hub and Amazon Echo. But it has a strong motor, much better than kwikset and August which I had installed before. Both those units went thru batteries at fast rates. August integrated with Apple’s HomeKit seamlessly and worked great.

I got two questions. 1.- How durable can it be while being installed in a very hot places like in the Caribbean, where DAY temperatures along the year are between 25 and 35 Centigrades. In addition during rainy days it may get wet. My Front door faces East and the sun and makes things worse. 2.- During vacation times, bulglers can damage the from lock to the point of destroying completly. How easy to be destroyed...Can the door still be open. Thank you so much

Hey Brad, great video but for future topics perhaps discussing which are best for metal doors? As I’ve tried the Nest x Yale device but it wasn’t totally smooth. Kinda bc my door & jamb have alittle slack, if that makes sense. Another words there 1/8”-1/16” play/slack. That’s primarily my side door/outside utility door. But for my inside lobby door leading to the basement I think I’ll try this Schlage device. It looks really cool & comes w/a built in keylock as well. The Nest DID NOT. Thanks again, Brandon!

When buying one of these, only buy one that can be left open. Some will always extend to the lock position after :30. Problem being that the door can be ruined if door gets shut with latch extended.

One thing people often miss in the “hacking” topic is that many smart devices connect directly to your home network. It’s best, if possible, to separate them from your main network though, as often their security leave something to be desired. Some home routers have the option of using two SSIDs (like “Family” and “Guest” in your WiFi), that are separated from each other to prevent them from talking. If your router does this, use the feature! If you get deep into home automation, find a router that does it! One cool thing with Z-wave is that the only thing actually on your network is the hub (Wink, SmartThings, etc). That’s great from a security standpoint!

Great video and answers all the questions. Just remember though that most entry is through a broken window. That’s right thieves break windows to get in. Also any door with a window in it is the least secure type of door. Break the window reach in and unlock the door. Good doors, good locks and an alarm system on the windows is the best.

Courtney B avoid full electronic bolt throw. Trust me I work on these every day. Better option would be SCHLAGE BE365. Yes you can do whatever you want in your home. This guy is a fool, I'd go somewhere else. Security plates /screws are standard with deadbolts and only don't come with the cheapest of locks. A 3/4" screw in the door frame isn't going to stop a boot from kicking the door in. I hate channels like this... They're just shilling for the manufacturers.

Steven Severson yes, you can program it to have the alarm go off if it senses someone is trying to pick the lock. I’m not sure of the details as far as if a good picker can override or bypass, but CNET’s review mentions the pick tampering alarm setting.

There still is a key slot that can be picked, so don't waste your money on any electronic locks that use a key as a bypass when the batteries get low. Go to mechanical entry deadbolt locks. I have had one installed on my two homes for over 20 years I just take it apart and clean and use lite lubrication to keep all the mechanical parts moving smoothly. I have one of the Lockey series locks. I use a six-digit code. You can install additional security pins to use 4 to 8 digit codes.

Not with this model deadbolt. You'd want a "double cylinder" deadbolt so you need a key on both sides of the door. The bad thing about that is, if you have a fire and you don't have your keys on you or near the door, you are locked in.
