Mitral valve repair has been widely regarded as the optimal surgical procedure to treat mitral valve dysfunction of all etiologies; including degenerative, ischemic, rheumatic and infectious causes. This review summarizes available data on the clinical outcomes following mitral valve repair compared with replacement.
