0:47 Mitral valve prolapse symptoms
1:16 Hypomagnesemia and mitral valve prolapse
2:38 Magnesium deficiency and heart health
4:11 Magnesium for mitral valve repair
5:39 Things that deplete magnesium
Today, we’re going to talk about the #1 nutrient deficiency involved with mitral valve prolapse syndrome. If you have mitral valve prolapse, your heart valves are not opening and closing correctly.
Mitral valve prolapse causes floppy, leaky valves that are large and bulging. This bulging, displaced tissue is called prolapse, which leads to inefficient heart pumping.
Mitral valve prolapse symptoms include weakness, fatigue, palpitations, anxiety, and shortness of breath. It’s often described as idiopathic, which means it has no known cause. Mitral valve prolapse is generally treated with beta-blockers or a calcium channel blocker.
In a double-blind study, 141 subjects with mitral valve prolapse were compared to 40 healthy subjects. Sixty percent of the mitral valve prolapse group had magnesium deficiency compared to only 5% of the healthy subjects.
Low magnesium leads to high adrenaline. It also accelerates the aging of the fibroblast cell, which helps you make collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. As we age, the fibroblast cell is very important for our skin, ligaments, tendons, and valves.
One of the first signs of magnesium deficiency is tetany. Surprisingly, 85% of people with mitral valve prolapse have tetany!
Don’t just rely on the RDA if you’re deficient in magnesium. Try taking 400 mg 2 to 3 times a day, working up to this amount slowly. Also, ensure you’re getting enough vitamin D. Magnesium won’t work without vitamin D!
Avoid sugar and refined carbs because they significantly decrease magnesium.
It takes years for a magnesium deficiency to show up and it can take up to a year to correct. Try magnesium glycinate to increase your magnesium levels over time.

I’ve been diagnosed with MVP about 15 years ago due to symptoms of irregular hearbeat, chest pain, back pain and random high pulse. The cardiologist said I may have been born with it. I’m 45. Just keep monitoring it. I went later 2 more times to the ER, wore Holter monitor etc. All symptoms were due to MVP. I started taking Magnesium gylicinate regularly about 5 years ago before bed (400 mg) for leg cramps and a more relaxed sleep. I had a very detailed heart ultrasound about 3 years ago and they could not find my prolapse. It’s no longer there. Nobody knew what happened… Now, I think this may have been due to Magnesium…

Omgosh!!! I was diagnosed with MVP at age 18, I have been under the care of a cardiologist since, I am now 66. I had an ablation in 2002 and it’s helped my wacky, chaotic heartbeat mostly. But several years ago my heart started beating irregularly (significantly) again. So my Dr had me wear 24 hour heart monitor, again. I had 13,532 IRREGULAR heart beats in 24 hours, my Dr put me on beta blocker but it really didn’t make that big of a difference in the irregularity and it made me light headed so I quit taking it. My daughter read about Magnesium so I started taking it, 2 years later when I wore the heart monitor I had 98 irregular heartbeats!!!!! When my Dr called he said this is remarkable, the beta blocker is doing its job to which I replied I am not taking that I am taking magnesium! There was a silent pause and then he said, we’ll keep doing it! But it doesn’t stop there, he started listening harder for the click, it was getting fainter!!! Btw… I do take vitamin D3 but recently ordered your Vit D3 combo! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

@@TheSK1199 I took and still take 400 mg (two 200mg tablets). Curiously, I began taking alpha lipoic acid for neuropathy and wanted to make sure I was not taking too much and, because of my own work, I am familiar with research so I searched PubMed for info on alpha lipoic acid. I was struck by something else NOT related to alpha ipoic acid and nerve problems -- a lot of pretty new research suggests alpha lipoic acid is beneficial for heart and even serious arrhythmias. I mentioned ithis to a cardiologist I know through my work and he said there was some mounting excitement about that ... I am not a doctor and cannot give advice but I'm just saying if you have palpitations, MVP,etc.. you might want to do your own research or talk to your own doctor about taking magnesium ( many forms may upset stomach, glycinate won't) and perhaps alpha lipoic acid.

I was diagnosed with what my cardiologist called a textbook MVP when I was 18 years old. I knew something was wrong when for several days straight I had severe chest pain and could barely function. I thought I was having a heart attack at the time. After that initial episode I would experience “attacks” a few times per year that would stop me in my tracks. On one visit to my cardiologist I asked him what was causing the pain. He told me that people with MVP are typically low in magnesium and that the pain I was experiencing wasn’t from the valve itself, but from the surrounding tissue which becomes very sensitive because of this deficiency. After that visit I started taking magnesium supplements and dramatically reduced my painful episodes. I’m 64 now and still have the textbook MVP, but it doesn’t cause me the grief it used to.

I was diagnosed with MVP 20 years ago. Over the years I’ve gotten smarter about how to take care of my body. I’ve been taking magnesium and vitamin D religiously for at least 10 years. Recently I thought I needed to follow up on how my MVP was doing since I hadn’t had it checked out in over a decade. My cardiologist did all the same tests that originally diagnosed my MVP, but couldn’t find any sign of it! I was even symptomatic back in the day, but feel no signs of it now. I feel better at 49 than I did in my 20’s.

Over the past few days I've noticed I'm not so breathless so it looks like the Magnesium is beginning to work. I also take zinc and selenium. My fingernails are now much stronger. I don't eat junk, over-processed food and make all our meals from scratch plus do all my own baking. I don't like the weird chemicals put into store bought food. I was taught to cook and bake from a very early age. I even make my own chocolate and sweets (we call candies sweets in the UK). That way I know what's in it and can regulate the amount of sugar myself as I don't like anything that's over sweet.

I've trained in functional medicine over a decade and just wanted to point something out here that Dr. Berg said. He said you NEED vitamin D in order for magnesium to work when in reality, YOU NEED magnesium in order for vitamin D to work. If you are taking vitamin D or getting it through sunlight, you could deplete your magnesium stores and cause a host of problems unless you are taking it with magnesium as well. Not only that, but you need K2 to prevent calcium from getting stored in soft tissues as vitamin D taken alone could increase this risk. One example that happened to me here recently. I started getting 10-15 minutes per day of sunlight and by the 3rd day I noticed my sleep was terrible. I also noticed I felt more anxious. Why is that? Because as I stated above, YOUR BODY needs magnesium to activate vitamin D and by me getting more vitamin D through sunlight, I basically was in a deficit because I have not been taking that much magnesium. I knew the problem right away and increased my magnesium intake and it fixed it almost immediately.

Also key to know that many heart meds cause electrolyte deficiencies. So regular monitoring of electrolytes when changes meds/doses is also key. It's best to find the root cause to get of the meds & have less factors to contend with for normal function.

You can also end up with a damaged mitral valve (and thus MVP) after having rheumatic fever. As a kid this happened to me and conventional 'wisdom' at the time said I had to be on a blood pressure reducing drug for life and never do anything strenuous. After a year of that I said screw it, stopped taking the drug and got into weight lifting. 'Magically' (sarcasm) my heart healed itself and there is no trace of any valve damage or prolapse decades later.

OH. MYYYYY. GOODNESS! I was diagnosed with tachycardia in my late teens. I'm almost 44 now. they attempted an ablation - didn't go well - had to pull crash cart and I can't take beta blockers because I have low blood pressure. shortly after this diagnosis I started having panic attacks. Many, intense and regularly. to the point that they diagnosed me with chronic panic disorder and threw benzos at me to manage it so I could have some sort of quality of life. but I've been TRYING AND TRYING to get someone to hear me FOR SOOOOO LONG when I've said I always thought the panic was triggered after I have one of these tachycardia episodes and then this RUSH of adrenaline and THEN I go into fight or flight mode. Could it be this simple?! I'm literally crying rt now because even it it's not the case - this video gives me incredible hope to at least having something I can try to see if it helps me

@@mahitabm.hassan9730It gets better. I'm 2 tears out & still have anxiety, which could be due to other things BUT I no longer get panic attaxks. Expanding your lungs with breath holds daily should help as well, as the body will be already physiologically more distanced from that short breath fight or flight type breathing & you'll be better equipped to stay calmer even when your body is freaking out. You're effectively retraining your body with thoughts and breathing to slowly leave that panic reflec behind every time the heart goes nuts.

My family members had to do the same before dentist visit, as a prophylactic. Then science proved it was not beneficial. The premise is the need for healthy gums & how bacteria in the mouth can dangerously affect the heart.

I remember asking my dentist why I had to take the antibiotic for mvp before a cleaning and he told me that it was because my gums could bleed during the cleaning process and bacteria could get in and go straight to my heart. I said that didn’t make sense to me because I floss every day and sometimes my gums would bleed then, but no one seems be concerned about bacteria when that happens. 🤷🏻‍♀️ He didn’t seem too happy that I challenged him on it. From that point on, I stopped taking the antibiotic. Glad it’s not a requirement anymore.

I can’t wait to try this. Can you tell me, if I eat the leafy greens and make a smoothie with them, if this will still give me the same benefits as if I were to eat them in a salad? My guess is yes, but I want to be sure, and don’t know that if by blending it could change the chemical compounds somehow. Many thanks for all you do!! 😊😊❤

In fact, blending fruits and vegetables does not alter their nutritional value. In fact, it can improve the body's absorption of nutrients. However, it is important to avoid adding sugar, as this can negate the health benefits of the blended produce.

Omeprazole, which lowers acid (which you very much need) causes poorer nutrient absorption & aquired long qt, which can be fatal. I imagine whoever continually prescribed that despite her issues could be legally liable. Its literally on many lists of drugs to avoid, that cause or worsen long qt.
