If I remember correctly, this album used the raw vocal files for him, no filtering, and that makes it probably my favorite album of theirs start to finish. Fortress is a close second, but the quality of this one is just astounding to me. Another thing about this album is this was after they got away from a music label and crowdfunded it on Indiegogo. Their goal was $125k and they ended up raising $341,146. Rewards included up to joining in on an album release pizza house party with the band and even features on the album, whether they be vocal or instrumental. Four people supported them to the level of getting features.

I believe all the male vocals on this song were done by Rody, but the female vocals were Kayla Howran, a country singer. Odds are if you hear female vocals in a different PtH song it's going to be Jadea Kelly, another country singer and frequent contributor.

And to think, this incredible band is technically speaking, and of their own admission, considered to be a "Commercial Failure". This is why they funded their own albums after a certain point, complications with the labels, profits, all that. If I'm not mistaken, and I think I'm remembering correctly here, at the time they put our the indigogo and tested the waters of seeing if fans could possibly fund an album - They actually received enough money to fund TWO albums. Protest has always had an intense following. The people that love this band love it with fierce passion. I've seen them live 7 times, I'm in one of their music videos that was filmed here and the song also written about here, met them many, times, I've got signed staged used drum sticks from some of those shows, all of my CD inserts and set lists signed. They've always been humble and grateful for their fans. The song Mist is about one of the first shows they played here, the line "Stood on the shoulders of proud Newfoundlanders" is quite literal. We rushed the stage when they came on and that shit was not prepared for us. Parts of it collapsed. We held it up for them. I'll always be grateful for them and their music.

My favourite band of all time. They cram so much into each song that you can listen to it a hundred times and still hear something new... But I guess that also makes them a bad choice for a first-time-listen reaction haha. Anyway, more Protest the Hero please! You haven't done anything from the album Scurrilous yet, so that's probably the logical next step - C'est La Vie would probably be the most popular choice there, but any of the first four tracks would make me very happy :)

It is likely I've spent more time listening to Protest The Hero than any other band in my 33 years. I remember hearing Kezia by them for the first time in highschool and being speechless. @keepitsecret-dl1pr
@keepitsecret-dl1pr Жыл бұрын
@@Cmoore718 As a drummer, Adler's style of drumming is absolutely nothing like Moe's. The drumming is not as complex as Moe's, it's high stamina and uses a lot of quick double bass pedal. However the actual drumbeats are really straight forward. For example, if I wanted to learn how to play C'est La Vie note for note, it's unbelievably tricky (I've tabbed it out by ear), but learning anything off Volition I'd just have to up my foot stamina. Moe is a beast because he literally changed the beat almost every bar and still made it sound naturally flowing and not jarring at all. His fills were immaculate. Nevertheless, Adler did an incredible job and was extremely disciplined in learning all the drums Luke and Tim had written for him to play. He added his own spin on stuff (no doubt mostly being the double bass triplets that are all over the place on the album) but didn't have much hand in the actual composition. You can hear that the drums were written by guitarists. I remember seeing Adler's vlogs during the session work and he really, really struggled but aced it in the end. One of the reasons he said he wanted to do it was because he personally just loved the guitar work of Protest.

I know everyone has already mentioned Kayla Howran as the featured vocalist, but they also feature Ron Jarzombek (Blotted Science) in the dueling solo. The entire album was funded by an Indiegogo campaign, and there are over 10 featured artists on this album, mostly vocalists, as campaign rewards.

I'm commenting this again, just because I think your reviews on songs are some of the best out there, but here's some outside of rock that I think stand out. Eyedea and Abilities - Glass. (A hip-hop song which is the antithesis of a verse chorus verse chorus song. Just a roller coaster) Shad - Storm. (Off his new album, he steps away from being a main lyricist to make a SONG. Powerful. Talks to your soul) Gramatik - Brave men (Moves and builds and takes off) DJ Shadow - Stem/ Long Stem (Masterpiece of a song and an uncommon fave) DJ Shadow - Corridors (Made with Steven prince who does movies and stuff) Interesting projects for longer listening. Serj Tankian - ORCA (A symphony in 4 acts) Dj Shadow- What Does Your Soul Look Like (One of those projects that stands out and talks to you)

I just discovered you when I seen you reacted to my favorite band the Smashing Pumpkins than noticed you do a lot of bands I love. Would you please react to Dinosaur Jr.'s "Kracked" or "Out There"? I'd also love to hear your take on the Smiths and At the Drive-In!

There's indeed a female singer in the final sequence, her name is Jadea Kelly, she sometimes appears on PTH tracks and she is INSANE!!! I love her work, really recommend

Jadea doesn't appear in this song. It's Kayla Howran.

Unbelievable track. Personally, one of the best metal songs of the 2010s. Lyrically I'm not even 100% sure what it's about but some of the lines are very poetic, and the instrumentation is extremely sophisticated.

Rody in their earlier stuff is pretty green, but he’s really come into something special in this album.

People usually note fortress as the best album but I think that’s nostalgia talking. This one is their best imo. Shout out to Yellow Teeth on this album too.

If you liked protest, I reeaaalllyyy recommend you to check out Hail The Sun. Insane band, insane group, the singer is the drum player, can't go wrong. Maybe the "The 'Fun' In Dysfunction" is a good track to begin ^^

I second the Hail the Sun recommendation, but I'd prefer a song off of Wake, like Disappearing Syndrome maybe. That whole album is the pinnacle of their catalog for me.

I feel like I'd recommend Hail the Sun to people who like Circa Survive more than people who like Protest the Hero.

Please do From the Sky by Protest the Hero. One of their most amazing songs in recent years IMO. Pianos and super slow melodic parts!

I would like to see more old PTH stuff, like The Divine Suicide of K or Blindfold Aside, just because they were totally rhytmically crazier than now-days PTH (still crazy, but more refined and prog, less "mathy" I would argue)

Hi Geebz, this was the first time I’ve heard this band and I thought the track rocked. My only complaint is I couldn’t hear the bass guitar well with my little outdoor speaker. Maybe they pulled the bass guitar back in the mix so it wouldn’t mess with the low growling? Anyway great song 😀
