Of course, in the heat of reacting to the engineering and composition, I have to say; THAT MELODY the singer is singing is so dynamic/powerful from his growl to soaring hook - immense talent!!!

@president elect George Kirby I completely understand what you mean about the lack of emotions, and when he touched on the vocalist in the video, it clarified what always stopped me from truly liking Haken. The vocalist is very tight in his range during the chorus in most of the songs I've heard from them. What I mean is typically, a chorus has a more diverse range that sort of highlights the vocals as the driving force behind that section, but for Haken it seems to be the complete opposite in the sense that the way they choose to highlight the vocals is by holding a very small range of octaves. Nothing's wrong with it and they certainly choose to write it that way, but it just doesn't do it for me.

You absolutely have to listen to the messiah complex suite from their most recent album "virus." It's split into 5 parts but is no more than 12 minutes. All kinds of meter changing and production tricks throughout the song(s)

Fun Fact: I first learned about Alan Watts from a piece of a lecture The Contortionist included in one of their songs. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iayYgJqY1anIiHU.html Transcript: In other words, that the so called involuntary circulation of your blood is one continuous process with the stars shining. If you find out that it’s you who circulates your blood you will at the same moment find out that you are shining the sun. Because your physical organism is one continuous process with everything else that is going on. Just as the waves are continuous with the ocean. Your body is continuous with the total energy system of the cosmos and its all you. Only you’re playing the game that you’re only this bit of it.

By the way, you'll find a lot of 'Yes' like harmonics in the vocals with huge octave range, Yes, Gentle Giant and King Crimson are massive inspirations for these guys. A lot of people underappreciate them, and they'll often have only heard one or two of their songs, and dismiss as such. Keep up the good work!

I saw them live supporting Devin Townsend in 2019. They blew us away. So powerful . BTW Diego, the Haken Keyboarder, also played live in Devin's Band. A fantastic musician!

You definitely need to do more Haken. They have so many gems, and so much variance between their tracks. This is one of those bands that will be fucking massive when people look back on them in retrospect.

Love your reactions as usual! Cockroach King would probably be the quintessential Haken track to check out! Though its hard to find a song by them that isn't interesting and amazing in some way or another.

Just listen to "The Mountain." The entire record. It is Haken's virtually undisputed opus.

@@TheBilaras97 Because _Visions_ is more accessible. _The Mountain_ requires more listening, and more musical experience in general to fully appreciate. But it is their most ambitious, cohesive, consistent, and well-executed effort to date.

@@alondite215 That's your opinion, man. Objectively both have great songs and okay songs. I prefer the story of Affinity and prefer the 80's vibe, so for me, that is easily head and shoulders above Mountain.

Awesome! I recommended The Contortionist in a Devin Townsend video because they opened for him. Haken was the OTHER band on that bill and they were equally amazing. It was a killer show and I'm blessed to have had it be the last live show I attended before covid-19 kicked all of our asses

Haken was the opening act to Devin Townsend in the last tour, and their keyboardist was also a part of the Devin Townsend band on stage (and mixed the drinks, watch Orders of Magnitude). Massive gig for him... :)

Back at this video because I love your reactions, but I also love Haken and Periphery. Would love to see you dig into Carosel - Haken or Reptile or Absolomb - Periphery and further your relationship with them. Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood (ex-Periphery Bassist) had his beautiful production hand in these. I believe you’d be a fan of anything he mixes. Thanks Decomposer ! 👏🏼👏🏼
