I personally disagree with the idea that aquarium lights are for our enjoyment only. I definitely agree that having lights on makes an aquarium look better. However, like humans I’ve observed that fish too have a circadian rhythm so when I turn off my aquarium lights, whether it be freshwater or marine, my fish will go into their holes to sleep or float in the open water column and they either won’t come out or you’ll barely see them at all until I turn them back on. I think lights in an aquarium help to regulate a fishes circadian rhythm. That is, if you switch them on and off at roughly the same time. Love your content guys, keep it up!

@@vorsntioedits301 It definitely makes sense too. In coral reefs, it appears like a desert at nighttime. I assume evolutionarily speaking it’s because mating behaviour for most fish doesn’t occur during the day so there isn’t anything to do, most fish aren’t equipped with nighttime vision and of course predators hunt at nigh so hiding is the most viable option for most fish.

Finally an honest lightning fish deal. Yes I like to keep my tanks on timers, and I hate sunlight light bulbs. Everything is going led now. Old florescent bulbs are getting hard to find. My Red devil does not like the light on. But her room has plenty of natural light.

I found my barbs doing this in my 20L and I basically did some exposure therapy, where I placed extra light on the side of the tank where they hid and I would do this for about 30 to 40 minutes only. Then turning those extra lights off will make the fish feel less intensity. Now my barbs have no problem with the regular aquarium light.

Another great video. I've actually had the pleasure to see bettas in the wild. While they are in shallow waters, that water is covered with a thick layer of floating plants. So, they don't get a lot of light in the wild either. My other plants don't like it much, but I cover my aquarium surface with duckweed and frogbit. My betta loves it!

The main reason we keep fish is to enjoy their beauty. An aquarium, imho, absolutely needs a light. Tried lightless tanks and tanks with different types of light. Best colours on the fish come out in a tank where the lights turn on and off on a schedule, fish’ll adapt to light accordingly. Of course don’t get a super blinding light.

I found a 48" Fluval Aquasky light for 40% off at my local Fish store. I scooped it up for my 75gal Mbuna cichlid tank and they seem to love the natural day night cycle. And I love how the new light seemingly makes their colors pop a lot more than my old standard light. Oh and I don't have much ambient light so without a tank light it would be almost un viewable.

That entry disclaimer is crucial, this is a fish only discussion... My coral tank needs a very good light, and my planted tank has descent ones too (though no where near as strong as the marine light). This topic depends on the Biology in the tank. This discussion changes dramatically when you introduce sensitive photosynthetic organisms. But, in the context you represented this: Totally agree, nice video. I also like how you framed the difference between high-light and low-light aquarium plants, as most of the hobby's current list of plants are low-to-moderate-light plants. Very few are true high-light plants.

I keep a lot of Severums and Geos and I only have my LED’s on for about 3-4 hours in each tank daily, and they aren’t kept to bright at all. I mostly put them on at night to observe them, and when I turn the lights on they absolutely know it’s time to eat. However since both tanks are fairly close to a very large picture window and from sunrise to sunset they are getting a good amount of light throughout the day. By the time 10-11pm comes around they are fairly relaxed and ready for sleep👌🏼

My female Betta and 7 Harlequin Rasboras seem to actually prefer the lights on. It has dozens of color combinations and I can adjust the brightness enough that I can make it super dim to keep the fish comfortable. Also, the second I turn the lights off, my Betta starts chasing all the Rasboras and stressing them out. I have plenty of areas in my tank for them to hide and get away from the light, but I can tell they get noticeably stressed when I turn the light off. Debating if I should even just separate them and put the Betta in her own tank.

The one with the *not direct sunlight can cause algae* ive been thinking about it ever since, been noticing my aquarium gets algae more on the front side more compared to the backside which is faced against the wall, glad thats confirmed for me now. Anyways about the lights do lights make some fishes active or make them do there normal routine something like a Day and night cycle for us, I know you’ve mentioned alot about fishes not caring about the light, but my Blood parrot here always Starts roaming around and it loves to fiddle around the side of the aquarium where it can see its reflection, it always hides whenever its dark, and you can totally see it Laying at its side cause it loved to hide in some tight spaces for some reason, tho i guess the only reason why it roams when theres light is it can see its reflection to interact with 👁👄👁

It's not that bright at night when the main light is off, its just that, there is no switch for the RGB to turn off. Its like having a small night light. Is it ok for my fishes (tetras, danios, angels) or could this stress them out? They seem happy at very active whenever I'm around and when its feeding time as well.

If you keep tinfoils with other fish like oscars and parrot fish, light is a necessity. Tinfoils as they grow start splasing water and they do that when they dont get minimum hours of lighting. In my tank a minimum of 2 hrs in the morning and 2 hrs at night keeps the tinfoils calm and they dont splash water. Also I think, the light might do something to the aquarium bacteria and algae.

Walmart. 5000 K under the cabinet lights. I use them on all my planted tanks. $8 to $10 dollars a piece. Work great. Have to use two on 55 gal and up. No need to buy a $100 dollar light. Also I want a certain amount of algae in my tanks depending on the fish I have in them. I may have 300 plates in a tank and that love to eat algae. The baby’s hide in it.

I am from Canada and my fish aren’t eating and I found out they have internal parasites. Since I am from Canada I can’t get any medication like general cure or anything. Do you have any advice?

Aside from Anubias which other plants do well in low light? And are there any fast growing plants that do well in low light? (For filtration purposes)

I'm having an issue with my 10 Celestichthys Choprae. I got them about a month ago and WOW they are gorgeous. Well I quickly noticed that with the lights on the colors become muted and they stop being active and don't even eat very much which concerns me because they're known to be voracious eaters. With the lights off all night, then turn on in the morning. It takes about a minute from them to be fully colored up and super active which is normal for this fish, to moving slowly with fins clamped and colors faded. Blue light seems to help some but I've also heard that blue light can cause more stress. Can anyone with experience with this fish give me some advice? They ate so unbelievably gorgeous and it's a shame not to light them up, but when I do the colors fade. To be clear these are glowlight danios...NOT genetically altered glofish. These are all natural and come from Myanmar

My Oscar tank is in the basement where there are no windows, so the room is totally dark. Shouldn’t I turn on the tank light in the morning and shut it off at night to simulate the cycle of light in nature? I read that fish’s health can be affected negatively if the tank is totally dark most of the day. In other words, it affects their growth hormone, mood, brain and nervous system. Or can I just turn on the tank light in the late afternoon when I get home from work and have it on for 3-4 hours until bedtime?

i work in my fish room so there is very little ambient light (I work on computers). I do have lighting but mostly because of my plants. I turn down the lights part of the day so they aren't full on crazy.

I only run the lights when I get home from work till I go to bed. Longer on the weekend if I’m home. I like to see my fish! Fish in the wild get sunlight.
