I have a question, im currently setting up a 30 gallon dirted aquarium that I plan on having live plants in. I will use a heater,... and eventually, no filter. would a betta be happy in that, or do I NEED the water flow?

can you do some kind of video or something on thermometers. I am about to pull what hair I have left out! LOL I have been in and out of the hobby for probably 30 + years and never gave this much thought. I recently set up a 90 gallon which is largest tank I have ever had. Well 4 thermometers later and all 4 read different temp, which one is accurate??????? Even have an Inkbird controller. Hellllllppppppp!!!!!!!

Hey guys love your videos! So full of information. I have a question, I have a 20 gallon with a few platies and mollies, would I be able to introduce a couple of female bettas? I feel so so bad for these fish in cups and my fish are quite friendly. Just wondering if it possible? I would love to be able to save a couple if I could. Thanks for all the videos and hope you dont stop making them.

jessie walls: it’s not so much about water flow - it’s keeping your tank aerated and the filter helps to “filter”out nasty stuff in the water. Especially in a tank that size. Bettas like calm waters - I have a tidal HOB on my tank and the nice thing is you can control the flow - I keep it really low - and the water in that tank is crystal clear. And I also have live plants. I’m switching to sand. I like the look better and it seems easier to vacuum and keep clean.

jfdd43: I don’t understand why people don’t grasp that concept. I actually had one guy who thought I was overdoing it bc I have 2 bettas in a 15 G with a divider. He tried to tell me bettas are happier in a smaller tank. I rescued mine from those pet store bowls, they were so happy when they had space, filtration, warm water and live plants they started building bubble nests the very next day. I told him I could survive in a studio apartment but I love living in a house. Same thing.

Shaya Bunny (that got sent before I finished) - I made some mistakes with my guppy tank and have had to start over from scratch. Fortunately, my bettas are doing well. That’s why I love the videos John and Lisa put up. They’re so informative, helpful, teaching us what to do and what not to do. I’ve really learned a lot from them. I, too, was blinding my bettas - I didn’t know! But I fixed that problem and they’re happier, as are the little otos in the tank with them. I love it - the “presidential suite”. You really love your betta, and it shows ❤️🐟

I work at a pet store and it breaks my heart the way they keep them in small, cold cups. The females are the most pathetic cause no one buys them. We had one that looked like she was really old. She lived and died in that small cold cup. I now own 3 females in my community tank and two males in a 5 gallon and 2.5 gallon. I bought them all cause they had been there so long. I wish pet stores would at least keep them in some sort of divided, heated tank instead of ice water. 😢. Oh all tanks are heated, have sponge filters, a cave and plants.

I plan on starting a betta sorority,,, I feel like people dont buy the females as much bc they're "more aggresive" and their fins "arent as pretty",,, I hate going into the pet store sometimes cause I get upset at the conditions they keep the fish in and people kind of brush it off because "they're just fish"
@rootsnwhiskers8351

This is how I ended up starting so many sororities. I felt bad for the females and wanted to save them all. Unfortunately in order to start a sorority you need to do alot of research and make sure to always have a back up plan. They're not as easy as they sound and you can't just throw a bunch of females in a tank together. But a successful sorority is amazing.

I will say, I got my betta from my sister since she wasn’t really caring for him. It was incredible to see him discover that he went from being in a 3 gallon to a 10 gallon tank and that he had so much space to explore, especially since I made him a naturalistic enclosure. He’s regained so much Of his color from before and he’s clearly very happy.

i had to teach myself not to look at the betta at night because he looks very dead when he's sleeping, even though he's actually quite healthy. it just gives me a scare when i see him at night and he just floating motionless and then in the morning he fine.

Another thing you can do to help with the flow and HOB filters is lower the water level 3-4 mm below the return _just_ enough so it makes a little waterfall. If the water level is right at the top (the way I prefer it in my other tanks) the surface water moves too much, and that's where they need to feel comfortable, to breathe and hang out.

I've found that for tank mates it's better to keep them with quite dull fish, browns and darker colours. In my experience I've noticed that some of the more territorial bettas will display at and attack particularly colourful tankmates such as neon tetras and especially guppies. They mistake bright fish for rivals so to play it safe I keep my more sassy bettas with more neutral toned fish.

It depends on the individual betta tho. I owned a betta with some neon tetras in a tank, and he was super chill with them. I suggest getting a bigger tank as well as taking into account that fish have personalitys that vary greatly, so be careful. Happy tanking!

Great tips, though I really wish you would have said no plastic plants for bettas, as they can tear their fins easily. Silk is best if you can't afford/care for live. I have a grumpy male betta who despises light because the poor thing was stuck in a tiny cup 1/4 filled with water on a Walmart shelf until he was over a year old. He'd hide whenever I turned the light on. He's now the ruler of his own 10 gallon kingdom, has so many plants that hardly any light gets through, and treats the two snails like his minions. I adore him, and he'll always be spoiled rotten.

I’ve kept betta my whole life. I’ve put the most effort I ever have into my current one, and started two bigger tropical tanks after a few weeks of falling down this rabbit hole. It’s honestly super rewarding. My freshly cycled 30 gallon is currently housing some super red cherry shrimp and some plant stowaway albino corydora fry! Waiting for the fry to get bigger so I can add a school of embers and find a centerpiece fish that won’t eat my shrimp.

Wow~ another GREAT video and I sure needed THIS 1. I've known for years what a Betta is- but THAT is ALL I knew! Imagine my surprise at EVERY thing that Bettas need to be comfortable + happy! I am SO happy that you made THIS video, besides ALL of your other ones, because I recently found myself wanting a Betta! Sure glad that I watched this video--THANK YOU! Now I have a better handle on what to do. I plan on having a "planted" aquarium, a heater, small light that I can dim, nice community fish that will get along with the Betta, and good food! I do have 1 questions tho-- what are " tanins" When I think of that word, I think of "dyeing boots" Once again- THANK YOU! I have learned SO much about so many different things having to do with fish--- and.... I always TAKE NOTES! 👍

I just got my first Betta from a free craigslist ad. He had been living in an unheated, unfiltered, one gallon bowl since Christmas and didn't look great. I had put together a planted Fluval Flex 9 with half a dozen neocaridina but I wasn't sure to stock it with as far as fish so I have the betta in there now. It was amazing to see him go from a depressed, stationary fish to a super active, playful killing machine. He had an expensive snack on a couple shrimp on the first day but now they seem to have learned and don't stray far from their cave. It seems like he only tries to attack them when they swim. Anyway, he's a pretty awesome fish and has way more personality than I expected.

Perfect subject to start to renaissance of 10 Things! Loved it all, only suggestion is I would have qualified the tank mates thing, emphasizing it depends on 1) the betta's personality & 2) tank size. I know that you went right into tank size after that, but lately I've been seeing some really crazy stocking choices & densities in betta tanks that are tiny and inadequate even for a single species included in them, much less in combination with others. But sounds like that will be covered in the next video, 10 Things of Best Betta Tankmates? I really hope that those who need to see it, tune it! Thanks again Lisa & John! And great guest spot with Joanna!

My roommates and I rescued a sorority of betta fish, they’re healing up from fin rot in a 20 gal nursing tank with dividers so they don’t stress each other out. Eztli, Itztli, Meztli and Tozi are super active and hungry now! Might be time to place them in the planted aquarium we’ve been growing. I don’t like keeping sororities though, might split them up for good if any issues arise.

I started out wanting a gallon bowl "tank" and a betta for me and my kid. Luckily researched 1st. Came across KGTropicals vids. I wanted a 5g but got a 10g (cheap) I put in plants cycled then put in neon tetras, then my betta, then Otocinclus, then 2 mollies. All small, all doing well. No fighting. My kid loves to watch them. Me too. You can do it. Something about adding a plant each add or changing the tank around a little so the terrain seems different. It's everyone's territory.

Hiding spots are key having multiple male bettas in a take. Also the size of the tank. About 15-20gal per male. They are territorial, as long as the have a cave/hiding spot to call their own, they get along just fine. A third thing, to have 2/3 females per male. Was an absolutely gorgeous tank with live plants and guppies. The bettas didn’t breed, but had a never ending supply of guppies lol

No 6 depends on the specific betta. Some of them are more chilled than the others. I have two and one couldn't even be held with a snail as he was getting after it too much, the other one doesn't seem to be bothered. I'd say to be very careful with adding tank mates.
