Another note too, on the Fremont bridge if I remember right is it was hot back then and the span that was floated down from Swan Island would not fit between the approach ramps because due to the heat the joints had expanded they had Fire Trucks on both sides of the span cooling the joints so that the span would fit into place.

You left out a detail about two bridges , there was a structural failure during the building of the fremont bridge approach ramps and the off ramps to no where on the marquam bridge

People need to read more into the actual history to appreciate what Portland designers and the Traffic engineers were doing back then. to say that there were offerings on the Markham bridge that went nowhere, is a misnomer. those off ramps on the east side were planned to connect later to the Mount Hood freeway which was voted down by the voters. it was a long process to decide if they had to take out much of Powell Boulevard all the way out east of Gresham all the businesses and homes that would have had to been removed from that corridor for the new freeway or rejected by the voters and instead mayor Neil Goldschmidt pushed to have the bus Mall built downtown to revitalize the downtown area which was a very wise move on his part at the time. Original Portland native such as myself have heard it all from recent complainers that think Portland is just a trash City they need to read more into the background of this great City because it's been very carefully planned and maintained for over 100 years. These recent transplants that have just come in during the past year of skirmishes, and to start riots, and think they were taking over, need to get a bus out of town quick and go back to where they came from.

The off ramps to no where as you call them were ramps for future highway projects that would connect to the bridge completed or cancelled.
