That’s an interesting way of doing it, how does the guardian calculate based on not knowing about your other doser ? You modified tank volume ?
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the way KHG recommend you set it up. Have your normal doser set to handle 90-95% of your alk demand and let the KHG fill the gap. Once the KHG consistently has to keep filling the gap, raise your main doser 👍🏻

Wow took about 6 tests for mine to get a good reading, interesting mine was set with a washrate of 1, I noticed a low ph reading on one of my tests thinking the chamber might not be getting washed proper. I moved it to 2 for washrate and checked in the manual, turns out 2 is default, no idea how mine was 1 , but it bought my reading of Kh from 7.6 to 8.1 on the first try and confirmed on second test, salifert is giving me 8.4 , however salifert a single drop colour change could easy be 0.3dkh :) out. be interesting to see if anyone also has an out of box washrate of 1.
@ParkersReef

Yeah washrate of 2 is always good! You can set an adjustment if you need to bridge the gap on that 0.3dkh difference, but I’d just give it another couple days

Ordered one today. freaky as I was watching your old KH Guardian video, was going to hit you up about your long term view. I wonder with that API if I can modify a doser to adjust calcium.
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
The API has all the information you need, but not sure how you would control any other doser with that information other than making an arduino interface. We have made an interface before using an arduino that tapped into the alk doser motor. It measured the time that the alk motor dosed for then dosed other heads based off a multiplication factor for calcium and magnesium :)
@jestronixhanderson9898
@jestronixhanderson9898 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, you got me thinking about a relay that’s powered off the alk motor, this could kick off a very similar “dosing motor” with a variable voltage you could calibrate that second motor. Or maybe the calcium reactor method on the kamoer pump ? Maybe run two kamoers, to be honest though calcium is pretty forgiving and easy dial in manually. The arduino method is interesting.
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
They have a calcium reactor module that is configurable via the standard software. An arduino driving some relays is the best option as it allows you to set time delays, optional multipliers etc

Hi Sam, nice video. I've just purchased a unit. The instructions say use a 500 micron or less filter on the salt water inlet. Just wondering what you use and where you buy them. I believe the check valves provided have a filter in them, but do you use anything at the source? Thanks
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, I've never actually used a filter on the salt water intake and I've used multiple KHG's for years now... I notice the other options on the market do come with a little intake filter, but I feel it is not necessary. Just ensure you have the inlet hose in a spot where it wont draw in too much detritus and you'll be fine :)

I've read articles on DIY reagents for KHG. It would be convenient if not only for cost but more since the OEM can be hard to get sometimes. Also read somewhere that there may be a new security feature in the firmware to detect non-OEM reagents. Have you ever tried making tour own? What's your take?

It would be possible as it is just an acid based solution. I couldn't speak much about the KHG's ability to detect DIY reagents though

Great video as always. Just to satisfy my curiosity though (I'm new to all this), this machine doses ALK as required after its measured, or just does the measuring and logging of results? If its the former, it makes the value proposition even stronger for me. As someone manually dosing by hand - and someone who hates the "Read the colour change" test kits, if this one does 2 jobs for the price of one I'm seriously tempted...

Hi Jay, I'm afraid there is no set instructions as it depends on your router - its more a networking question than a KHG questions. In essence, this is what you want to do: 1. Log onto your router, find the dynamic dns settings, see which providers are available. 2. Create a free dynamic dns account with one of these providers 3. Enter the dynamic DNS settings into your router 4. Setup port forwarding on your router 5. Done! Reach out if you get stuck at any point

Not sure if it’s intentional, but they’re not too worried about fixing it 😅

@@ParkersReef their website has the correct spelling so seems like a dumb mistake, lets hope their basic science skills are better than their spelling.

Just so y’all know 1ml is equivalent to a gram of water it’s weird that the people who made this would not know that considering they are chemists and I learned this is highschool chem😂

Not sure why you think the people who made this don’t know that? It’s more for people at home to measure accurately, much easier to measure weight accurately at home than volume ;)

Cool, but water weighs one gram per ml. Density of water=1

I know that, I think the instructions say to weigh it as it’s more accurate to do at home with scales than a measuring jug

@@ParkersReef makes sense. I guess a scale is more accessible than a pipette or graduated cylinder anyway. Super neat device and nice video. It's amazing how sophisticated the reef tools are now. We're a far cry away from the early days, before people started using two part, etc lol.

The average home use would get within 50-60ml using a kitchen measuring jug or within 1-2ml using kitchen scales I reckon

I was about to say the same / ask the same question. I know that a Ml of seawater weighs a little more than a gram - which makes sense based on dissolved solids, but if its pure (i.e. RODI Water), then 1ml = exactly 1 gram. I'm assuming that the instructions say weigh instead of measure since most of us have scales that go right down to the gram - if not higher accuracy - but measuring liquids to the exact ml is considerably harder...

I believe that is the reason why, much easier for the home hobbyist to be accurate with scales than a measuring jug :)
