This week with the winter chills my heart was pining for ‘Undhiyu’, Gujarat’s or more specifically, Surat’s most iconic mixed vegetable delicacy. A cult dish that heralds the coming of the chill, which is made only in the winter in Gujarat.
So, I decided that I would walk the lanes of Mumbai’s oldest Maharashtrian and Gujarati area in search for some authentic ‘Surti Undhiyu’, and what better place than Bhuleshwar and Mumbadev.
I stumbled upon an ancient shop called Hiralal Kashidas Bhajiawala. Hiralal Kasidas Shah, came to Bombay form Surat over a 100 years ago. With a thriving business selling ‘Kand’ (purple yam) ‘Bhajiyas’ in Surat, he espied an opportunity and set up a shop in Mumbai in 1936. Today, this third-generation eatery is carrying forward their grandfather’s legacy of serving authentic Surti food especially Undhiyu.

A girgaonkar watching this video sitting right here in canada..I have so many childhood memories connected to this place when we used to go n shop at bhuleshwar..we would never head back home without stopping by this place.uncle talking about chutney literally reminded me about that chutney n kaccha papita they serve..pure nostalgia!!uff..so glad that I searched for undhiyu recipe n came across this one..!best wishes to you all😊

I had read about this place for few years now and it has been on my list ever since. Last year December I went there but all the Undhiyu was finished by 12:30 p.m. Picked up some kachoris and bhajiyas and they were just superb. The chutney they give is goddamn awesome. Will try to score some undhiyu this week, fingers crossed...

Undhiyu was invented in Surat and best Gujarati Dish during winter only. There is also another version of Undhiyu which is done in Earthen pot called Matla Undhiyu. Safed ( White) is not dhokla for Gujaratis it called Idra/Idada in Gujarati.

કુણાલ ભાઈ આજનો એપિસોડ બહુ સરસ થાય. અહીં ઊંધિયુંની એકદમ ઓથેન્ટિક ટેસ્ટ મળશે. કેટલાક વાર અમારા ફેમિલી સાથે અહીં આવ્યા હતા અને બહુ એન્જોય કર્યા. તમે અહીં આવતા દેખાડશે તો બહુ સંતોષ થાય. તમે એવીજ ગુજરાતી રેસિપીઝ ટ્રાય કરું પડશે અને આપણે ચઈનેલપર લઇ આવો. આભાર છે.

I don't know why I never never liked this concept of undhiyo. I still remember the advertisement of undhiyo in a magazine, the vegetables used are the ones that I cringe. If to see from this shop I would go for Mug Bhaji and Shreekhanda as I think they would be a absolute delight to taste.

Your expression, your happiness , your satisfaction are all much better with only non vegetarian food 🐓🐐🐖🐋 but yes you also need to cater to your vegetarian viewers
