Khum Min the elephant is welcomed into the free herd by a very forward female!

Filmed in July, 2010 in Northern Thailand. I was part of a group who walked an elephant called Khum Min from a life of work (trekking) to a life of freedom (with a mahout/minder). This video starts where the previous footage stops (his chains have just been removed). How long will it take for him to integrate with his new herd?!
Khum Min will now live as part of this herd in the jungle (close to a remote Karen hilltribe village). The hope is that by providing these eles with a safe, happy herd environment, breeding will take place.
Asian Elephants are an endangered species due to habitat loss and poaching. There are between 41,410 and 52,345 left in the wild. If you'd like to support the protection and conservation of Asian elephants, please donate to the reputable non-profit organisation 'Elephants in Crisis': www.elephantsincrisis.org or www.elephantvoices.org
Hope you enjoy these beautiful moments!
This elephant release was part of the documentary 'Journey to Freedom' by award winning film maker Martin Guinness. Trailer can be viewed here: • Walk to Freedom - trailer

With all the human suffering and desperate human need out there, this seems to be such an enormous waste of valuable resources. When we can get our homeless vets with PTSD taken care of, then we can worry about these elephants " supposed" PTSD. Pfffff. SMH

This poor elephant lived a horrible life - I watched the earlier video of him being rescued AT NIGHT and the spiked chains being removed. No animal should be treated like this and I'm so glad he's free and will live out the rest of his days in peace and free of pain.

It’s sad that they had to be slaves at all. I’m sure that the life you are giving them is incredible and to be free from slavery and abuse is so beautiful. It would be an added bonus for them to have the bell removed one day so they can have their ultimate freedom and be truly free and happy. They are so lucky to have your organization to look after them. 🙏🏻

I love so much what you do on that Elephant free center , or what it's called. Learn so much about those amazing creatures, binge watching your videos. Try to imagine how they feel... After all those years living hard lives for humans, being a personal object struggling year after year.. Then suddenly moving yet again, but this time, to a place they doesn't recognize.. Friendly people, other elephants, water, sand, mudd, grass, and one day chains off, other elephants come chain less welcoming the elephant out in the woods, free and... Maby the new elephant think it's a dream, or when do they realize it's their new home. Free as possible and if needed, nice humans to help. It's so amazing what those people have built up and do to help elephants, and even new babies are born 😍 Glad I got the chance to see this on KZfaq. 🌹🌹🌼🌼🌸🌷🍀❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😍😘

To you who question the bell around the neck etc. Please remember that these elephants have spent years as prisoners of humans and freeing them is a slow process. The bells ensure they are able to be tracked and if anything goes wrong they can be found. The leg chains have gone, the slave is as free as it can be.

I bet the elephants would prefer the bells not be on them..it's just 2 pieces of wood hitting each other they would have to be very close to them if they are tracking them that way and not to mention other animals hearing them and coming to investigate the noise....

There are lots of paranoid people posting here. You should note in the video that a mention was made of electric fence and corn fields (property in the area owned by someone else). The elephants will still be escorted by a mahout since the elephants do not know the area and need to be guided in order to keep them in the safe area. The mahout doesn't need to prod them with a stick. If you have ever done any hiking you will know that a good stick is handy for protection from snakes, pushing assorted greenery out of the way, and assistance on hills. The elephants are following him without the need for him to force them to do anything. The mahout is helping the elephants create a routine path for herd travel in the safe zone. The herd will need to travel to find enough food to eat.

The elephants are free to roam a select area that is protected for them. The bell is so they can be found and returned to the protected area should they wonder off. Outside of the protected area is farms and they get raided by the elephants if not attended to. The farmers want compensation for their lost revenue. It is a delicate balance between the native people and native animals. These elephants will no longer be worked, or ridden. They are as free as they can be in the world we now live in.

Nice job. Great to see these intelligent creatures being set free from the chains and human servitude. I'm puzzled though because in the wild, bull elephants are not usually part of the herd. The herds are lead by a matriarch and the bulls usually only come into contact for breeding. How has this worked out with Khum Min?
