Kia is recalling nearly 295,000 vehicles in the USA because the engines can stall or catch fire.
A week ago, Kia and affiliated Korean automaker Hyundai were fined by the U.S. government for allegedly delaying recalls.
The recall covers certain 2012 and 2013 Sorento SUVs, 2012 through 2015 Forte and Forte Koup cars and 2011 through 2013 Optima Hybrid cars. Also included are 2014 and 2015 Soul SUVs and 2012 Sportage SUVs.
Kia said in documents posted Saturday by the U.S. government that no manufacturing defect has been found, but it’s recalling the vehicles to mitigate any risk of fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating Kia and Hyundai engine fires in 2019. The agency opened the probe after the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety filed a petition seeking the investigation. When the inquiry began, the agency said it had owner complaints of more than 3,100 fires, 103 injuries and one death. Dealers will inspect the engines for fuel or oil leaks and replace them if necessary. The company is developing a knock sensor software update.
Last week, the NHTSA announced that Kia and Hyundai must pay $137 million in fines and for safety improvements because they moved too slowly to recall more than 1 million vehicles with engines that can fail. The fines resolve a three-year government probe into the companies’ behavior involving recalls of multiple models dating to the 2011 model year. Kia must pay $27 million and invest $16 million on safety performance measures. Another $27 million payment will be deferred as long as Kia meets safety conditions, the NHTSA said.
Kia denied the U.S. allegations but said it wanted to avoid a protracted legal fight.
Engine failure and fire problems with Hyundais and Kias have plagued the companies for more than five years.

Hi Carl, I just seen this video.. thank you so much I’m from CT. We have this Kia Sedona 2018, it has a 163k and it has a regular oil change at the Kia. But, last week, July 12, we went to NJ and along the way goin there, the engine light lit up at noon time. I thought it lit up because it’s almost time for its oil change.The car still drive smoothly,Going back back home at midnight, the car start slowing slowing down . I was with my wife and and mother in law. I checked the engine, the fluids. And found out the engine is out of oil. The oil dip stick is dry. I asked my son to buy me oil. After an hour, about 115am, my son came with the oil. And fill up the engine. The engine starts again and went home safely. We brought the minivan at he Kia dealer the following Monday and told them the story. Now, they said, we need to replace engine. I asked them why? They said bec the engine burnt all the oil and some of the valve got broken. but I replied that .The car had a regular engine oil change with them. There’s no indication at all that it’s burning oil. There’s no oil leakage. Exhaust is clean, no oil on it.. I ended up still paying them for the diagnostic and they said there’s nothing they can do about it bec the 150k warranty passed already. Bec the mileage is now 163k. They’re asking $8500 for engine replacement. Is there a way you could help me out… ?

In August 2023 I had my 2012 optima 2.4 motor and it locked up at 202000miles remanufactured engine installed for free under the recall changed my own oil so no maintenance records and still qualified for the replacement so no it's not true that you have to have the records to qualify

carl i'm not sure you understand what 14k oil changes can do it causes what they call "sludge" that will make the rod bearing fail

I can't believe how helpful that woman was!! Where I live in NJ most dealers service dept won't even answer the phone and if they do, they want to be off the phone in two seconds. And they charge for EVERYTHING, it's always the customers fault no matter what. I even had a brand new car where the clock didn't work and they tried to blame it on me! (my car was less than a week old)

Hi Carl, your videos are the BEST! my 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport with 54,000 miles original and extended Hyundai SUV died on a highway almost being rear ended. I had the SUV towed into the dealer I purchased the car who stated the engine was blown and they would not replace the engine. I had the KSDS inspected twice and Hyundai stated it's ok. Hyundai is unreasonable and do not care about anyone. The help you are giving people is invaluable and you are a GREAT person.

Dropped my car off on March 2, 2021 due to engine failure. I was told it would take 3-4 days to diagnose the issue and at that time I could receive a loaner. Waited 2 weeks no update. Kia Covington pike location in TN. Called once a week for updates. I was told 3 weeks in that the machine they use to diagnose issues was broken and it would take a week to fix. ANOTHER SETBACK! Fast forward to 4/20/21. I went up to the service department and demanded an explanation for all the delays. I was told to come back in an hr to speak with a supervisor. Came back as I was told and saw my car had been moved. Service rep informed me that it had been diagnosed and approved for replacement. Offered me a loaner as well. It’s been a whirlwind with Kia. Hang in there everyone! Thanks for the videos they kept my spirits high ☮️ -Peace to All

well thats bs my engine already has 250k miles on it so ifigured they would just deny me on that alone, but it has burned oil since day 1 I just noticed and didnt even do oil changed just kept adding oil and change the filter from time to time

I got my engine replaced in April 2021. My Kia Optima is a 2015. Crazy thing was after they paid for my engine replacement the next day my transmission went out. And of course I had to pay for it. But yeah I had no problem getting them to replace my engine.

I have a 2021 Kia Seltos S. Purchased new June 2021. 22k miles. About month ago it started to knock. Took it to South Austin Kia. Three weeks later they said they are dropping a new engine. Then they asked for maintenance records. I do my own oil and have all the receipts from the oil and filter changes. Also have pics of me doing the changes. I have yet to submit them but I'm going to do that today. I'll update on the response

Might be a bit late but; 87k miles 2013 Sonata. ZERO ISSUES from Hyundai to get my engine replaced. Had failure but was able to drive the last mile home. Had car towed in December to Hyundai -> Just received car back 2 days ago with new engine and it's running like a champ again. I did not provide any maintenance records. I believe they pulled Carfax to see my records. I did ensure that before bringing it in the oil level was good and coolant was good; Probably a good tip to prevent them from thinking it was an error on YOUR part.

I have a Kia Optima 2013; I am a third owner bought it at 151k kms 4 months ago and the car is in dealership. It has ksds sensor and I am being denied for replacement for big gaps of oil changes in CARFAX reports. How can I proceed? my 15k is down in this car in 4 months, I am a student

Hi Carl, I don't like being cynical but I think you are correct about Kia seizing on anything they can in order to avoid replacing defective engines. It will probably take another class action suit against Kia to get a final answer regarding maintenance records. Kia seems to be making PR blunders left and right now. And that is why your wife drives a Toyota...... 'Nuff said! Stay safe and thanks for this task you have undertaken.

Do you recommend you call Kia? From one dealership they said it’s not under warranty and the other dealership says it has a lifetime warranty. Interesting difference.

They won’t replace mine, my 2016 Kia soul has 35,000 miles on it, I had no idea there was a recall until my engine started knocking, they said I ‘waited too long’ since the recall. So then I asked if it would be covered under my warranty, when I brought my car in they gave my car and ECU software upgrade (which is also a recall, that I didn’t ask for.) They said they can’t process any warranty claims for 45 days after any recall work has been done. I’m so over this company. I’ll never buy one again.

@@Xxwalkingdeadgirl my buddy has a 2018 Kia Soul 2.0gdi engine that's making a.engine noise and you mentioned you waited to long since the recall? What recall are you referring too? I know theres a current recall for a 2020 and 2021 Kia Soul 2.0 gdi engines but not sure if there was a prior recall that you are referring too?

@@ddemier There was a recall on the 2016 models as well, but I was never notified and didn’t act until it was already an issue. After it was all said and done, my engine failed, Kia America called and apologized for my complaints on the cars performance not being addressed properly at the dealership (apparently they didn’t do a full diagnostic like I asked them to, just said “yup that sounds bad” and jumped to trying to sell me a used engine, didn’t bother to check for the recall) and offered to replace it, I had already sold it and replaced it with my new Subaru. Will never buy a Kia or Hyundai vehicle again. Driven minimally, maintenance regularly and the engine fails at 35k miles? No thank you, never again.

@@ddemier it’s recall 19V120000, if it is knocking, the engine is about to fail. I was able to sell mine to CarMax with no engine for about $8k, I’d advise him to do the same.

you got to go to more than one dealership, the first dealership asked me for maintenance records and I was like ok? but what does that have to do with the error the manufacturer committed? even id i messed up the engine would have given out early anyway...which it did. anyway i called a few spots 3rd time was a charm never even asked me for records of any sorts period i brought it in literally two hours called me back saying they had placed the order with head office to get the engine brought in and id have the car back in 3 days.

My Optima spun a rod bearing at 130k miles. The dealer found no sludge in the oil pan. Firmware was up to date. I sent them receipts from the mountain of oil filters I've purchased - always change oil myself. Repair was approved in one day. Car was ready a week later.

@@dalevalentine2264 Sounds correct. I wonder if they would cover the replacement engine failing? Probably wouldn't occur, since the failures are caused by contamination in the manufacturing process, not the design.

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! So my sister is currently having this problem for her 2015 Kia Soul. It's in the shop and they are saying that its an engine problem but it's due to the lack of maintenance. She's got an oil change every other month because the oil was burning so fast. We truly believe they are giving us the run around for several reasons. Are we able to speak with you to talk this through?

My 2018 Kia soul is burning oil bad ...I bought it a year ago 16,000 cash..I have a 7yr or 100,000 miles I'm at 69,000 .. bought it with 13,000 my job I had put a lot of miles on my car..I even changed my job to slow down miles ....they told me oil consumption is not included in replacement of my motor...told me my long block is gone....and also my steering column need replacement as well as my motor 12,000... I've only had car a yr an1/2 and owe 1,800 on it .....idk wat to do I live in Brockton ma, plz help ..they said I need 24 oil change receipts ..since I've had car....I didn't save oil change receipts

Basically, Kia and Hyundai will try to avoid replacing the engine. My 2015 Sonata just started to malfunction with the P:1236 issue. Thanks for sharing

I have a Kia optima I always go to the dealer for all my oil changes so there will be no discrepancies because I have a 10-year warranty and if anything happened I'm going to want to use my warranty with no questions asked so that's my advice always go to Kia dealership for all of your oil changes that way they will have all of your receipts with no discrepancies at all

I have a 2020 optima S bought new. And I only go to my local Kia dealer for all oil changes ect. One it still under warranty and two just for this reason. They did it all and have all the records on it. I also make sure to bring it in before the oil is due. Like with in 500 miles. Fingers crossed I never have to deal with this.

It makes sense that they want to see the car’s oil changes had been done on time, to rule out whether the engine failure is due to the owner’s negligence, or it’s strictly related to the recall. He went 14k miles between oil changes, that’s 2-3 oil changes that he missed. That’s negligence.

Not true. He didn’t go that long. I called my local KIA dealership, the guy I’m helping lives in North Carolina. He’s the only owner of the car since 2013 and he only has one payment left. He’s taken care of the car since 2013! So for this dealership to decline him is just crazy but I know from experience knowing they’re running out of engines that they gotta find some way to slow these engine replacements

These engines fail regardless of how often you change your oil. Change it every month, they will fail. They started failing the day they left the factory. They were damaged in the assembly process, this is the reason for the recall. Mine failed and caught fire 9 days after it's 14th oil change.

The way an engine looks internally when oil changes are not done is completely different when an engine is abused or taken care of.

My daughter had the engine in a 2012 Accent replaced/ rebuilt by Springfield Hyundai in suburban Philadelphia. They tried the maintenance log thing her and he said that I did all the maintenance (which I do)...

I’m the original owner of a 2014 Forte. The engine blew back in May with 98,000 miles and I had the knock sensor recall completed in February. I did not have to provide any maintenance records, but it took nearly 4 1/2 months due to a parts backlog. While they were test driving my car after the engine replacement, the transmission blew and they replaced that under warranty, too. So 98k miles and I have a brand new engine and brand new transmission in a car that has been paid off for three years. Before this all happened I was planning on trading it in next year, but I’ll probably hold on to it now.

Mine was replaced 9000 miles ago at 91K miles. 2013 Optima 2.0L, third engine since the first owner. The dealership I used gave me zero problems about replacing the engine which surprised me because I've had issues with extremely simple things with them. EDIT: I gave zero maintenance records when my car was in.

I have a 2014 Kia Optima, I brought my car brand new with only 4 miles, now I have around 101,101 miles. I have alwalys kept up on my recalls if any and have all of the maintenance records. I was driving one day then all of the sudden my car would not accelerate and engine light came on. Was told by my Kia dealership that I need a new PCM. My car has been sitting at the dealership for going on almost 2 months, cause first they said the part is on back order (they are waiting for the part to be made, and no telling how long that is going to take) I was told that more Optimas are having this problem with getting the part. I am looking at around $1600 for the part & labor. I just hope after getting this done I don't run into any engine problems. I do remember Kia sending me paperwork like a questionnaire asking about the engine and if I had any repairs done, I did fill out and sent back to them. Wow! That’s another horror story! All I can say is try to avoid paying anything because they know they are supposed to replace these blown problem engines and it looks like they’re trying to screw people over cause they’re running out of engines.

That is BS. I was told the same thing two and a half years ago, until I received a recall on the engine in the mail. Question did he receive a recall letter in the mail 1st thing.

Hi my friends kia got a recall and has been having engine trouble for awhile the part that has the trouble is not the same part as the recall so now they have her car she’s been using a rental and they don’t want to replace her engine due to it not being serviced with them she did it at other places can they do that

Going through that now with a 2015 Kia optima engine failer. They have denied fixing the engine due to not getting an update to the car before the engine fail. I was never notified of said update. I have never been happy with the dealership I bought the car from and heard maybe going to another dealer might help get it fixed. Right now it's been over 2 months car is still at the dealership.

When did anyone stop me and say you need an update to drive your car? You don't know the world is having trouble with the cars until something happens to yours and you get online and look into it and see. This is cray how Kia is treating people.

I have and get nowhere. I just bought a new engine with KIA and they put it in but it's not cheap 6,000. Now I get got in the mail a letting saying if I install the engine Knock Sensor I will get a lifetime warranty.Crazy Right.

Hyundai dealers in NH I have dealt with won't even answer their phones in the service dept. You get voicemail, leave a message and they won't call back. You have to go there or make an appointment online. Afterwards the paperwork says you need fuel system cleaned, radiator flushed, air filters changed, among other stuff on a car with 20k miles. I wonder if they are laying the groundwork for rejection when the engine goes, saying I didn't maintain it properly. It's a 2020 Kona

My car is a 16 Elantra GT 116K and I am wokring on the same thing. I work for Chrysler and told them I already found the issue they said bring it in so we can inspect it. I told them I work in a shop and always have done my own oil and every other service. I told them my engine is clean I have pulled the pan and found the rod bearing on 3 to be scorched lol.

Never mind the 50mm lens. I really like you for contributing to solutions that is helping so many people. A lot of people are becoming more confident in the face of the intimidation tactics from Hyundai and Kia (how I see it). And what is with this asking for his name thing. Is the dealership recording information and forwarding it to headquarters so that if said person goes to another dealer, they have information to go on that might help them deny the claim?

I live in NJ, I have a 2014 Kia Soul with 83,000 miles. Yes Kia did replace the engine (Jersey City Kia) they didn't ask for any proof of service documents. But they kept my car for 3 months and after I got my car back my flexpipe was mysteriously cracked and my air-conditioner is blowing out hot air. I will keep you informed.

It says in the class action that you don't have to provide these documents anymore....mostly because some people change their own oil etc. Tell them to go to someone else. A lot of places try to slimeball ppl. I'm having mine looked at this week. My engine literally died yesterday. If they don't fix it....lawyer tf UP! How has your new engine been working? Or whatever they had to do to your kia engine to fix it, hows the performance been?

I haven't had to get my engine replaced. I called for a guy in NC who was denied. Unfortunately lawyer or now, KIA is pretty covered in their ability to deny an engine if they suspect foul play. They have tons of money to waste in court fees. With that being said I've heard of new horror stories where the dealership is denying your engine if you don't have the knock detection sensor software update on your car which is totally insane! Let me know how your situation goes. Keep me updated

Just before Thanksgiving I had put my 2018 Kia Optima PHEV (w/service update) in for service at a Kia dealership after engine failure and they called me yesterday asking for maintenance records. I bought the car 15 months ago as a used Fleet vehicle that had 22,000 miles so being the second owner, I was certain the maintenance records from the first owner were available to them online and I was able to get Sept 2022 thru Nov 2022 records and asked if they needed every single one of my records but they said Sept thru Nov was good enough

I was unlucky on this. i bought my car from Hertz Rentals and the warranty changed to 60k. at 107k I changed out my catalytic converter and then found the oil consumption issue. I called Kia, then DMV KIA BBA, BBA, and finally checked the lemon law with all these details. I was denied due to warranty expiration. One thing I found something interesting about this whole ordeal. For those stuck with the car like me. Try Liqui Moli engine flush then afterwards the Liqui Moli oil treatment. My consumption has decreased. I am not saying this fixes it but it does reduce it. Either way, it is a band-aid for a sad problem from this car brand which is also known as Hyundai. By far the GDi engine does this the most.

Just having this issue now. No records, was just refilling disappearing oil with no dash warnings of low oil. Dealer is filing a claim and asked for records but I don't have any. I had brake work done in August, the mechanic topped up the oil but it was basically gone 6 weeks later.

They replaced our engine at 105K miles. We had owned it for two weeks - bought it from Auto Nation. There were some maitenance records on the car in the purchase process. Auto Nation tried to give us a used engine (they where on the hook if not for the recall) but we pushed the issue of the recalls and they finally turned it over to KIA. Once it got to KIA it was a smooth process and they did a great job. I was aware of the engine issue and probably wouldn't got the car if it didn't appear cared for.

You don’t need your records prior to the settlement. But after like Aug 2020 in theory they can ask for it. But I just got my engine replaced and they didn’t ask for my records. But honestly after Aug 2020 can’t really damage the engine to that point.

They will see service history of your vehicle through CARFAX, unless whoever was servicing the car did not report it to CARFAX

No auto manufacturer will honour an engine warranty if you cannot prove you had oil changes performed at required intervals. All owners manuals clearly state that.

My 2011 kia optima ex turbo was running fine until 5 may 2023.....engine just shutdown...all the lights turned on and I coasted to the side of the highway. Was towed to a kia dealership about 3 miles away. Yesterday Sat. May 21 2023 I got a call that my engine had already been replaced for free and was ready for pick up. This is kia of North Austin.

What if you do your own oil changes, don’t have receipts of the oil and filter, but have records of when you did the oil changes (date/mileage), and saved packaging of OEM oil filters with mileage and dates written on them?

Our engine on our 2016 Kia Optima just went out 3 weeks ago. Our Kia dealership is so backed up. It’s finally getting looked at tomorrow. Our car started making a knocking noise and the next day the engine completely stopped working. I had no idea that there was any type of recall or lawsuit with Kia regarding this issue. I’m so worried that Kia will deny us because we didn’t have the Knock sensor installed. Our car has never been neglected. We have all the records for the maintenance on our car. If we had any idea about this issue we would have had taken care of it. Who has 10k to fix an engine? I certainly don’t. I feel sick about the whole situation

Our 2018 Kia Soul was denied an engine replacement because we didn't have the last 10 oil change records, only the last 2. We purchased the vehicle from Hertz just over a year ago. Working on Hertz to give us the records but I can't believe this is a thing...

@@randallturner8048 whatever they can to get out of honoring the warranty on damaged and / or seized engine. they could say the wrong oil was used, or wasn't changed frequently enough. they'll go as far as if the oil filter on the car is not a kia (or hyundai) o e m filter, damage could have been done, n can't honor warranty. kia n hyundai sux.....dealer personel, n their cars. toyota way better.

always keep all your receipts on service of a vehicle. You need it for oil service proof, filter change, duraion, mileage, , brakes. andf this could be for tires, rotors

Hi Scottie, Thank you for sharing your automotive knowledge; I have learned a lot. I currently drive a 2017 KIA Sedona with 99500 miles on it. Overall it runs really good, except the gas injection module going out at 68000 miles which was 8000 miles out of the warranty period. It cost me $650. My question is, you had an episode talking about the KIA engine recall. Is this including the 3.3 Lt engine on the Sedona?

Yes that year is covered but you have to make sure you have the ksds on your car. If not you might have to pay out of pocket and then seek reimbursement. You can find out more information in my latest video where I talk about the steps to get reimbursed. You have until aug 9th.

My car is the same year and my engine was also just replaced due to excessive oil consumption. There’s protected archives on the internet that only dealerships and auto repair businesses have access to, but they are all aware of these Kia engine recalls. So keep going until you find one that knows exactly what it is. Your Kia should also have a lifetime warranty now. As long as the reason of engine damage is part of the recall, the warranty should absolutely cover replacement as well as replacement of other parts that were damaged as a result of the engine seizure.

My 2017 Santa Fe was burning a quart every 500 miles. I drove for 30,000 miles like that! Even took it across the country with 5 quarts in the trunk. Thought as long as it has oil I’m good… then I went to pass a car and it seized up on me. Hyundai just approved a replacement.

Hello I have a 2013 Kia Optima LX 2.4l And its starting To make a knocking Noise and when I looked at my dipstick there was chunks of metal on it and I think my engine is starting to go I DO HAVE THE KSDS UPDATE. ! But can I still be declined for engine replacement or am I covered THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Take your car for oil changes at the same place that keeps record. I keep the receipts in a file just for my car. I may not get them on time though. 🤔 Does something have to be wrong to get a new engine?

Yup, if nothing is wrong with your engine there is nothing to fix. " Don't fix what isn't broken". I personally change my oil myself.

Thanks for your attempted owner help. I am not a Kia/Hyundai technician but can tell you that NOT performing oil and filter changes per manufacturer oil change requirements listed in owners manual will allow a manufacturer to legally decline an engine warranty failure due to excessive wear caused by that owners failure. The inspecting dealer mechanic will likely remove the engine valve cover to inspect or at least remove the oil fill cap using a small mirror and light. If he sees a lot of black sludge deposits he will suggest the dealer ask for verification of adequate oil and filter changes for that reason. If it looks normally clean proof of those oil changes likely will NOT be asked for. The mechanic does not make the decision to accept or decline warranty coverage. The dealership does because if their warranty engines which are often routinely inspected on site by manufacturer representatives show clear lack of oil change maintenance the dealership may be required to eat the cost of engine and labor.

I need help. I bought a 2016 Kia Sorento on Oct 2nd 2018. I just paid it off Feb of this year. April 20th it starting knocking and I immediately pulled over and left it and had it towed first thing in the a.m. to my closest dealership. This is when I found out that I was screwed. I never was informed of the knock sensor upgrade actually the only contact was a tow hitch recall which I don't have.( until NOW and I'm getting stuff frequently) I only had my truck 20 some days when this campaign started and Noone let me know I needed the upgrade. Not KIA not the dealership where I purchased it. And I had checked the recall stuff after hearing about the fires. But this was never on there. Now 2 months later my truck has been and still currently between 2 dealerships. I've been told something new each time i spend 3-4 hrs on hold , transfered, disconnected or not called back. They always gave me a glimmer of hope after each call promising to call after they contacted the dealership. until yesterday when i was denied. Being told I was notified in December about it. My truck was 20 days old why haven't you contacted me before now. I'm 55 years old I'm disabled, I raise my four-year-old granddaughter and I live in the middle of no where My extended warranty was scam and I am screwed. I don't know if there's anything I can do and I could really use some guidance. Please.

Really wish I knew about all this before I bought my 2015 Hyundai sonata 2 weeks ago. Bought it from a Kia dealership here locally. Now I find out my engine might go at any time. Ugh. I've emailed Hyundai, and apparently they'll get back to me. I've checked my vin and nothing comes up. I'm going to call my local Hyundai dealership tomorrow and find out what's going on.

All you gotta do is get the ksds on your car or call and make sure you have it. If you don’t then schedule to get it. Then you’re covered when the engine goes out. It will go out because when they made the engines they made faulty rod bearings

my wife bought a 2012 Sorento with 2.4 gdi new. it now has 100,000 miles on it and it uses over a quart of oil every 1000 miles. we took it to our local dealer for a consumption test and they said it was magically only using .6 quarts every 1000 miles and kia considered this normal usage.

My sonata engine died brought in on recall took a week for them to look at it then they asked for oil records i do myself said i could call credit card company but he said its ok and i got a call next day saying it was approved and i could get loaner next day now im waiting for car to get fixed cuz they need an engine i guess that they have to order
