KIA Niro is a compact crossover launched back in 2016. It competes with the likes of the Toyota C-HR or the VW T-Roc. In terms of size the Niro is also about the size of the XCeed. However the XCeed can be had with a regular petrol motor, a mild hybrid or the plug-in hybrid, whereas the Niro can be a full hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or EV.
These days electrification is the buzz word in the car world. Some carmakers, like VW, invest in completely new EV platforms. Others, like Toyota, are reluctant to shift from hybrids. And KIA offers three types of propulsion in one model - HEV, PHEV and EV - possibly awaiting to see how the situation will develop.
This is the new KIA Niro. Today in its most popular form so far - the hybrid.

I find it hard to call anything eucalyptus related as ecological.... But then, I am Portuguese and my country has been devastated by eucalyptus...

A comprehensive review. Some details not covered by other motor journalists for example the brake disc cleaning device. Great laid back and comedic approach which makes enjoyable viewing.

I own previous gen Niro FL with digital tacho. It shows revs both in eco and sport mode. I'm already impressed with my old one. Mpg is quite good, even with big wheels. Just did a 400 km roadtrip with 2 persons on board. Got 5,0 l/100kmh, speeds were up to 130 km/h.

What I like about the dash board layout is that the screens are part of the nacelle, unlike many others where the screen looks like an I-pad rammed in the top of the dash. I've ordered my Niro full hybrid. I think right now hybrids the way to go. It takes away the need to search for a charger and one that works! plus I'm not being charged horrendous electricity prices. The infrastructure for full electric is not there yet, so as good as many electric cars are, its not for me.

Hybrids are now with the lowest CO2 footprint if you include manufacturing CO2. EVs won't save us from climate change unless battery production changes radically.

Genuinely got nothing this time. Just commenting to help boost your content, because it's good! I like the Koreans, they have really upped their game. Also I like the way a KIA is offered - packed with a truck-load of kit with barely any options to choose from *cough VW group* 😅 Is KIA still built in Slovakia?

The Niro is built in South Korea. Sportage and Ceed are made in Slovakia.

Like your comments especiallly the one saying that the overtaking power is not enough. I do have a test drive on Niro HEV. No chance to test drive on highway. Nice car, just the power is not enough. By the way EV6 dual motor one is gorgeous. !!! I am in New Zealand. Definitely follow your channel.

Thanks! I'll have that EV6 GT for a test drive in a month or so. Stay tuned! As for the Niro HEV, I'm pretty sure they limited it electronically to keep the emissions down. Still, it's a practical commuter.

I have a gen.1 NIRO HeV model 3. For over taking or when joining fast flowing traffic, I put the car into Sport mode which I find gives more than enough punch to get you going.

Kia/Hyundai along with VW group are leaving other legacy automakers in the dust with their EV offerings. This car, in EV form, is a great younger sibling to the EV6. I've recently begun seeing old-gen Niro EVs as taxis here in NYC which is certainly more pleasant than the horrendous Nissan vans that destroy your back with their suspension & eyes with their look.

It's funny, I would say Mercedes is doing a more convincing job than VW by a long shot. Definately premium segment, sure, but technologically, the Mercedes is far ahead of VW. VW isn't premium, but it is priced between mid-range and premium while AUDI is definately priced as a premium, but with worse tech than a mercedes EV. KIA/Hyundai does well though, quite techy, especially as they are also sufficiently cheaper than TSLA to justify the Korean options (which the VWs are definately not!), and this is not even mentioning that the ID3 was an outright scandal (and a dangerous one at that) at release with software that was a hazard. KIA/Hyundai appears to be better at this whole SW-thing. I know as far as pricing goes, I can only speak for where I live (DK) and the VWs here seem much too expensive compared to especially KIA/Hyundai. VW has a good production capacity, it seems. But the EV-quality of TSLA or the koreans is better, for the price.

I am looking for a hybrid with higher seating so this car is of interest in addition to a nearly new RAV4, CRV or Sportage. Looking back at your review of the previous model there doesn’t appear to be a huge leap forward over this (except styling) and the old one wasn’t too bad to look at.

Hi Marek, I am confused between toyota chr and the niro hybrid. The top spec niro is 4-5k pounds expensive than the top spec chr. Is it a better option to go for the trim 2 niro instead of a top spec chr? The only drawback in chr that i found was the legspace in the backseat. What is your experience when it comes to both of the cars

The new C-HR is coming soon, so I imagine this is the reason for the price difference. While I find the C-HR rather pleasant to drive (especially in the 2-liter hybrid form), I also find the Niro more practical in every day use. But not 4-5k GBP more practical.

Hi Marek.. have this stupid offset headrest more settings like up and down? Im using seat in upright setting, and in most cars headrest just pushing my head to front.

AFAIR this one only goes up and down. I know what you mean with the headrest pushing your head too much to the front.

I don't like keyless entry./start. Where to put the bunch of keys ? Also i rest my hand on gear selector at times

I'd probably go for the standard hybrid, but the older model was easily capable of 60 mpg, It was nice to drive too. I don't like the tacked on look of these new instrument arrays.

They’ll only sell the plug-in hybrid and full electric version here in Norway. I might want to swap my plug-in hybrid with the EV, but I am unsure if it’s good value compared to the competition if you want more than the lower trims.

Watch out for charging speeds (peak at around 70 kW). If you're planning road trips, this could be an issue. Otherwise ~400 km real life range is appealing.

@@MarekDrivesENG good point, for our one to three long journeys a year our generation one Niro PHEV will be a lot more practical. Especially with young kids with limited patience waiting in a still standing car (on a charger for instance).

Prices are spicy!! :( BTW, I like your reviews, but I miss occasional graphics which would help absorb some info better for my distracted mind - especially true when it comes to enumerations, comparisons or number spamming. With those I would definitely keep coming back more often.

The performance depends on battery charge level? For example 0-100 in 10.4 sec is the same with full battery and with 30% battery?

Might be a stupid question... but how does this compare to the Yaris Cross? I'm trying to decide between both while knowing they are not entirelly comparable.

How does it compare in what respect? Toyota is always the better hybrid, but KIA is a better overall package even than the C-HR, against which it competes. More space, practicality, kit...

So-called acoustic windscreen. Acoustic front side windows are always welcome, but often an option (if available at all).

1db less noise inside using acoustic windscreen when we tested Kona. You had to buy premium model though. Not worth the extra 7000 dollars to go premium line for 1db.

I think the design is a quantum leap forward from the outgoing model. This particular colour is really sharp but I wouldn't chose a black accent blade. Maybe a dark grey blade? I’m kind of surprised the PHEV isn’t popular with city people knowing they could go about on full electric 90% of the time but maybe the price is too high? Or maybe the PHEV buyer just goes for the full EV? Anyways, Kia has been doing an amazing job imo. The EV6 AWD looks really appealing. I’m going to test that in a couple weeks.

The Niro PHEV eats trough two energy sources at once in freezing winter, but that’s a common problem with plug-in hybrids. But petrol engines doesn’t like to be running on high rpm from cold start, so there’s some advantages to run the engine in a plug-in hybrid when it’s cold. The new model should have a electric heating system for the cabin that will reduce some of the fuel consumption in winter but might affect electric range.

I would guess people living in the cities choose the EV over PHEVs because the charging infrastructure is better in more populated areas and the EV often have lower toll rates (or other benefits, at least here in Norway).

Modern car should not do any gear shifts in town. so it has to be EV or Toyota/honda hybrid ;)

I was really keen on one of these but they've done silly things with the pricing where I am. The hybrid costs more than a RAV4 hybrid, and the top of the range EV costs more than the big battery base version of the EV6. It makes really hard to justify when some manufacturers here are offering full EVs for less money.

The design is much improved over the outgoing model. However I’d like to see a car shaped car, not a crossover or SUV. I don’t want a big heavy SUV, I want a sedan. I’d much rather have an ionic than a Nero, it’s a shame they killed that one.

Electric vehicles are suitable only for city driving of rich people for now. We don't know the future but there's one thing that I'm sure: everyone who use these cars will get much radiation of the magnetic field of the powerful motor and the large battery, today and in the future. I don't know how many people will take care of this bad reality...

EV overpriced. Half the ice range. I fill my car in 2 minutes. Drive 900km. EV version costs twice the price, range 480km, takes 2 hours to charge even on a super charger. EV toys for the rich. 78% of ev charge up on coal and gas.....baw haw

@@ProPatria1919 Indestructo" safety glass was being used every year in vehicles produced at the Ford Motor Company works in Dagenham, England. "Indestructo" safety glass was manufactured by British IndestructÕ Glass, Ltd. of London. This was the laminated glass used by the Ford Motor Company in 1939. Laminated windscreens are fitted as standard in almost every car today. Laminated side glass? No.

I (used to?) watch all your vids, but my brain blurs over with all these new-fangled electrified vehicles. They all look the same, both inside and out, and without any real buttons on the inside, they're bland and boring. Bring back buttons. Bring back buttons. Bring back buttons.
