The e-Niro and new EV6 might be the stars of Kia's electric car range, but the Korean carmaker's electric journey started off with the Soul EV back in 2014. The current car, launched in 2019, carries over the original Soul EV's quirky styling but now has a very useable range.
It's almost the forgotten child in Kia's electric car range, so does that mean it's the one to avoid? Nicki Shields finds out

I bought a second hand First Edition 2020 Soul EV back in August. They are amazing cars. Very happy with mine. Only covered 4000 miles in just over 2 months. The second hand stock is very limited at the moment due to the chip shortage. I saw ONE, Yes One 2020 First Edition on Autotrader just now! . There are a few more earlier models for sale. Crazy prices.

I have a 2020 version first edition. Love it. 280 miles +/- 20 depending on the temperature. Have regularly done 200 mile mostly motorway trips with 50 miles left.Last week did 280 miles, 95% motorway with one 15 min charge stop and 30 miles left at the end. I will be hard pressed to match that mileage on another car and its disappointing to see the new Kia and Ioniq have less.

Let’s not forget the Harmon Kardon sound system in the 2020 version. Apparently it’s 660 watts, with 10 speakers. Mainly for the front seat passengers to appreciate it as they get the midrange and tweeters. Part-Ex’d my 2019 Leaf for one in Feb 2021 and I really can’t see me changing it for anything else and that includes the EV6 or Ionic.

Absolutely love the look of the new soul ev, seriously want one of these in 3 years time once my current PCP is finished lol, like the look of blue one or the cherry red one you get on Kia website 👌👍

I understand that the latest Maxx version no longer has a heat pump or the headup display as compared to the 1st edition version.

Problem as of today is that there in not a single 64kWh Soul for sale on the second hand market!

I tend to go electric when I get round to changing my car, this is highly likely to be the one. Would like a new one but it will be at least a 2020 model. I like something a little bit different and it would be a lot quicker to find in a car park than my current grey corsa!

It was the 2014 Soul EV that I drove for 5 minutes and made the decision my next car was to be electric. That 2020 on was an obvious choice but price put me right off! I bought a Ioniq , 3 years ago, never looked back since. However if we are expected to pay 55k for our next EV I’ll be back in an ICE car I think 🤔

Be careful on those range figures, for the 27 and 30 you are giving the NEDC figures (In real life expect 100 for the 27,124 for the 30) yet the WLTP for the 64 2020 mode (I’d say year round in mixed driving expect 4 miles per kWh so a range of 256, more in summer less in winter). I’ve had a 30 and now a 64 they are very capable cars, throw a roof rack on and a box and negate the boot issue for the times you need more than the boot allows (but drop the floor and take advantage of the height and it’s more capable than you would think)

Generally love your stuff, however, in this video it was a shame you did not have an older model also to compare in the video.

The video intro, showing a gaping mouth, is now behind the times. You must now stand with stretched arms raised above the head. Higher the arms higher the views. You are welcome 🥴

Does not really matter what the brand is when it comes to secondhand EV’s, because the battery packs are going to degrade to a point where they cannot power the vehicle. There are many early Nissan Leafs out there for example that are virtually worthless because they need a whopping £14k worth of battery plus fitting. EV’s are adding to our throwaway society by only having a relatively short lifecycle.
@Joe-lb8qn
@Joe-lb8qn 2 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. The Leaf was a special case, the battery chemistry on the earlier ones was poor and never used since. Also look at fully charged you can get a new 40kWh battery for much cheaper than that second hand (RL gets his replaced). There are tesla 's with 400km of miles still at 90% original range. Kia/hyundai (as an example) come with 8 year warranty they dont do that because you need to replace the battery after 3 years.

@@Joe-lb8qn situation with Early Nissan Leaf is very real. As is any BEV with a failed cell that is out of warranty. Here in North America Tesla 100d that require battery repair are being sold mostly for parts. Some OEM warranty battery packs for 8 years but not all. After that you are on your own. Regardless of actual battery chemistry, residues on older BEV’s will be non existent. I guess it’s good news for major manufacturers that vehicles are scrapped earlier and earlier as it will kill the used car market in one fell swoop.

@@eltonkingsley5617 Besides, it would be rare to have to replace the entire battery pack. For example, there are 192 individual cells that make up the 24kWh Leaf pack, so it would only be a case of replacing any individual cells that had degraded to a point of limited use. In the meantime, during usage of the car, the owner would be saving a huge amount on the cost of fueling it - for example, my Leaf costs me about £1.50 to cover 100 miles, saving me around £1000 per year in fuel compared to the 55mpg Prius I had before. And the servicing is about 30% cheaper... And I don't pay any Road Tax... And I can park for free in my local city... 😎

@@michaelgoode9555 In the year that you have taken to reply to this post, several thousand early Tesla model S EV variants have either been scrapped or had their battery packs replaced. So not bollox then. Buying a Kia or sister brand Hyundai with a seven year warranty may seem like a good idea but what happens to that vehicle at 8 years old and now on the second hand market. Take the risk of the battery pack surviving, or walk away leaving the vehicle with no residual retail value. EV’s may be the future of motoring, however battery chemistry and the charging infrastructure have a long way to go prior to their being mass adoption.

This is nonsense. The batteries on anything but a Leaf will likely outlast the rest of the car.
