Let’s get a few things straight, OK? A Kia Stonic is a Kia Rio - only with added roof rails, infinitesimally more luggage space, and 43 millimetres of additional ground clearance. And different hair and makeup. This will cost you $5500 extra, roughly.

We’ve seen this kind of cloning before, with crossovers and cars: Stonic is Rio just like Subaru XV is Impreza hatch. Of course, some manufacturers do this without changing the name - like Toyota with Yaris and Yaris Cross.
Either way, beancounters inside carmakers jump at this kind of thing, because the fundamental R&D is already in the can - amortised and paid for - you just jack the car up a bit, you give it marginally different styling, bit of botox if you’re lucky, slap on a new badge - and there’s a brand new SUV, at a fraction of the cost of developing a bespoke one.
Like, don’t get me wrong here: Stonic is an awesome styling exercise. It looks great - the proportions are spot on, and the front end in particular came together really well. Especially on GT-Line, which you’re predominately looking at in this review.
With cars being the fashion statement they often are in the minds of many, there’s all too frequently a line in the sand with the letters ‘SUV’ on one side. The ‘must have’ side. It’s kinda non-negotiable.
So there will be people out there for whom only an SUV will do. This ultimatum will be delivered to you in some way - probably not in the manner of the butler handing you a gilt-edged envelope. For these people (who I would argue can’t see the forest here, for the trees) Stonic will be a contender in the way Rio won’t.
Stonic is priced - and equipped - competitively against its peers, such as Mazda’s CX-3 and Big Sister’s Venue. You’ll pay roughly $10,000 more for a fully-loaded CX-3. However, the Mazda’s not a rip-off. CX-3 delivers roughly 50 per cent more power from its 2.0-litre four, and it has AWD and adaptive cruise, for example - both of which the Stonic lacks.
If you go dollar-for-dollar with CX-3, you’re looking at a front-drive CX-3 Maxx Sport - and then you’re back to manual seats, non-adaptive cruise control and smaller 16-inch alloys. Stonic GT-Line starts looking pretty sharp against a Maxx Sport CX-3.
Hyundai Venue is close to a direct Stonic competitor on price and spec. Like Stonic, Venue is front-drive only, but even here, Venue will give you about 25 per cent better power to weight.
So, there’s your boxed set of three diminutive SUVs, if you want to duck out and test drive today, comparatively. CX-3 for polish and performance; Stonic as the price-leader; Venue in the middle. Just make sure you drive variants at the same price-point, otherwise this will skew your perception.

John, I am blown away with how in-depth your review is. It's more like a PhD dissertation, clearly discussing all the relevant issues. You have definitely raised the world wide bar as to how to review a car. And we'll done for not pressing the f@#$ing dashboard to judge the quality, like so many other reviews do. Some owners of Rolls Royce cars have never pressed their dashboards either.
@AutoExpertJC

Thanks very much Isaac. Instead of doing what most reviewers do (regurgitating the press kit and trying to appease the carmaker that hosted them) I try to approach it from the point of view of 'What would an aspiring owner need to know?'. Agreed on dashboard hardness - what tangible difference does that make?

LUV the out-takes! Thanks John, good to see perfection isn't easy to come by! :-) - oh, FWIW, I think the Stonic looks much better than RIO - strong, chiselled and fresher with those LEDs. The black wheel trim around the guards is a clever trick to hide the gaping space the extra height gives. For a budget tit-lift they have done exceptionally well methinks.

Just as something that popped into my head. The extra 43mm would be very handy in the presence of older couples and the careers of older people, given they don’t require a wheelchair of course, as I imagine that the 43mm would make the car much easier to get into and out of.

@@dinosshed Yeah. 100% with you on that! Whilst I was applying for jobs I would take my grandfather to his doctors appointments because it was far easier for him to get into and out of my ‘92 Hilux than my grandparents’ 2010 Aurion, especially whilst he was having his sciatic nerve trouble! Though, it is starting to get to the point now where SUV’s are getting too tall to get into comfortably, as are 4WD’s and utes. At least, without a sidestep that is! These smaller SUV’s are almost bang on though. I believe the Vitara is about the best on the market for the elderly, as it is low enough to be decent to drive, and not a rollover waiting to happen, but also high enough that it is easy to get into and out of, then again, I don’t have much experience in the SUV market.

@@AutoExpertJC Torque is not 'work'. If I apply 100ft-lbs (torque) to a breaker bar on a wheel stud and it's not moving, I'm not doing any work at all, just applying torque. Torque without rpm (radians per second) is 0 kW / HP AKA "Work", punching 0 rpm into the formulas you provided prove that. (oops, Steve M. On the wrong youtube account).
@AutoExpertJC

@@wotid FFS, dude - I never said torque was work. I said ft-lb is the same as lb-ft, and that torque and work had the same fundamental units, which they do. Context is everything. Thanks for the physics lesson, but I don't need it. You, however, are confusing power and work. Applying angular work mens moving a torque through an arc (I never supplied the formula for that - it wasn't relevant to the discussion). Angular power is torque at rotational speed. Oops-a-daisy. Nice editing; some people see two blue birds, I see one clever girl. If I'm wrong, well, I suppose that is a nod to my view of your editing skills and creativity. The skit with other humans nearly distracted me enough, but I think the numbers match if my blurry deciphering is to be trusted. I tried to not be too obvious as to not pull the wool over the eyes of everyone if I'm right :) I hope to see more live streams some time this year as well as in growing anticipation for the next generation WRX/STi reviews even though I feel the current STi will be my car of choice in to the foreseeable future (which was made taking your strong WRX suggestion into serious consideration). Enjoy all the videos mate, as much as that does nothing for you. Stop being so damn reasonable of a human being as it gives a bit of hope that humanity isn't completely lost, those moments when you see what is trending in society and ponder how did we get so advanced ... that is the magic, the miracle of today. Some people believe the planet is flat, and we are somehow making advances in tech, science, and at times society.

I am quite disappointed that the are able to swap hardware to accommodate us and not do this easy infotainment swap. Things you only find out after you buy the car. The interior & exterior trim on a constant course of self destruction, clutches, brakes, suspension and most of all wheel bearings were a endless money pit. So much for buying a German built car. Meanwhile my Skoda has just passed 100k, apart from oil, filters & tyres everything is still as it left the factory. Yes even brake pads & bulbs. Yes it passes its "controle technique" (French safety test) every time, no problems. She now drives a Suzuki Swift, that too is as reliable as a wood burning stove.

I wonder about the value for money with these jacked up hatches that become mini suv's, 25% more seems to erode the interest that the nice looking mini suv has elicited, think I agree with you on that. It's a great car, I enjoyed the review, and I hate the left hand drive radio in my Toyota Fortuner just as much.

Hi John. Sadly manufacturers can't allow us to save our driving setups that are more fun to drive. ECO mode has to be the default the car jumps back to every single time you start the car. In other modes the car won't meet the fancy official emission or fuel consumption values. Same with Start-Stop-Systems. You have to deactivate them every...fucking...time you start your car.

1.0 litre V twin…. plus, wait for it, Two single turbos with oversized intercooler (suitable for a V8 twin turbo) with twin electric fans sandwiched between the intercooler and radiator. The radiator also having twin high flow fans on a different relay and fuse to that of the intercooler fans? Two seperate exhausts all the way to the back (302 stainless steel with mandrel bends of course), low restriction mufflers 2 or 3 per side (aka hot dogs). Perhaps water injection as an option? Any chance we could supercharge this also (actually, I am joking).

Ricardo says 333cc is the optimal cylinder size, hence 999cc three cylinder engines and the Renault/Merc 1.33L 4cyl turbo
@BruceHoult
@BruceHoult 3 жыл бұрын
It's unlikely that nature would conspire to make the optimum size a round number such as 333 or 500 in our arbitrary measurement system, but it may well be somewhere in that range. Also, as by the definition of "optimum" (or "maximum") for smooth continuous curve the slope is zero at the optimum, if the actual optimum was, say, 400cc then 300 and 500 would also be very close to optimum -- and 250 or 600 probably not far off as well.

I was driving one of the brand new DMAX’s on Friday at work (the VW van I usually use for parts deliveries had a check engine light, so I couldn’t use it), and I was in a narrow street with traffic islands. As I was going past one I had it tell me to brake with a red light flashing above the dash, which scared the shit out of me. The reason, it saw a parked car ahead. I drive down that street regularly, so I know how to take it, and I was positioned in a way to avoid said car, yet it still screamed at me to brake. This actually took my attention off the road, and hence I find it more dangerous than not having the system at all! Between that and it screaming at me for blind spot when the thing in my “blindspot” is in both my mirror and visible out the window... Unfortunately, it isn’t the manufacturers fault that these systems are there, they simply have to put them there to get a 5 star rating. There should be a way for them to be turned off though, as these things drive me crazy when J drive it! That and the incredibly stiff suspension that I didn’t notice in the dual cab tub, (the parts DMAX is a single cab with flat tray). If it weren’t for these, the DMAX is by far the best ute I have ever driven, it has decent throttle response, the brakes are exceptional, you throw it into a corner and it goes, and it is exceptional with an engine, or half a VW transporter on the back! I’d certainly own the dual cab should I somehow manage to have $70,000 enter my bank account. (That is so there is enough left over.) And given the new partnership, I would imagine that the Mazda BT50 would be very much, if not exactly the same! Both absolutely shit on everything else on the market presently

Interesting - e10 actually means 'up to 10 per cent ethanol'. It's unclear what the additives for 95 and 98 actually are, but ethanol is certainly an octane booster. (But not enough to turn 91 into 95 at 10%.)

Well... My wife and I test drove the Stonic (1.4) and then the Rio GT. To us (my wifes' feedback, not biased by me) was that the Stonic did not quite work. The visibility was off out the front windscreen and weirdly reduced somehow. The drive was ok, but found that the benefits of the 'SUV' part were hard to find (ok, couldn't find any). In fact, to get in and out we had to duck quite a bit under the roof. We hopped into the Rio and went 'ahhh, this is much better'. We could see, the car was nimble and fun. There seemed to be more room to get in and out. Go figure. Drive trains could not be directly compared with the cars, however the 1.4 was terrible. Really under-powered. You really had to 'keep your foot in' just to move at an normal pace. Let alone pull onto an on-ramp and get up to speed. You had to really press the go-pedal like your life depended on it. Big 'no thanks' from us. Could see it working for someone that never goes past 50km/hr. The 1.0T was great. 100% agree with your review. Not a 'pocket rocket' but reasonable for a shopping cart. Shouldn't be looking at a Rio GT if you are after a hot hatch. Why I hate seeing 'GT' on models. However, really effortless and great to drive around town. Gets up and goes more than enough for normal use. As far as SUV, we decided IF we wanted SUV to look at the Seltos as that is actually an SUV. If we want a round town shopping basket, Rio GT all the way. The Stonic seemed to us to be the worst parts of an SUV while removing the best parts of the base hatch Rio? We did not get the offering either.

John, your comment regarding the ease of mirroring the display interface for right-hand-drive operation is spot on. It sounds simply too easy, doesn't it? However, your worthy suggestion will fall on deaf, unresponsive ears at Mapnsoft - the KIA/Hyundai software propeller-heads. Their Nov 2020 update for the 10.25 inch displays is laughable. Lots of questionably aesthetic stuff that looks like the work experience kid designed it. More significantly, advertised functionality has simply been removed. It was there when I bought my Seltos - now it has disappeared into the ether (MB Command Control?). KIA Australia's response is non-existent.
