Peds Onc nurses are by far the most amazing people on this earth. Backstory - my daughter was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma in Dec 2020, just one month shy of her 3rd birthday. During her treatment, those nurses were literal angels. The level of compassion they gave to my daughter as well as me and my husband is something I don't think words can express. She had to receive a BMT and we lived out of the hospital for 7 months. Those nurses became our family. We never felt like we were in it alone in the process. You have chosen a field that I don't think you can comprehend the positive impact you will have on Hem-Onc families. Those nurses held our hands, gave us hugs, laughed and cried with us. We will always be forever grateful for their compassion and care!

Woohoo!!! Congrats girl!! 🎉 I started as a new grad in the ER on nights and have worked night shift for a year and a half. I actually really love working night shift. I feel that because you don’t have the typical resources as day shift that the teamwork is better and you become closer with your coworkers. Night shift is also typically less busy (not always the case) so that can help make the transition from student nurse to RN a little easier. Blackout curtains are also a MUST!

Congratulations Kiara!!!!!! I am so dang proud of you for sticking to your passion and getting that dream job. You deserve this so much. I’m SOOOOO excited for the nursing content that is coming. Your future patients and their families are going to be well taken care of and I am over the moon for you on this. Anna H. is amazing and so are you! You can do the things that you want with nursing AND coaching/KZfaq!! Not an RN, but I am an MRI technologist in Seattle. My best advice would be that you will probably have days where you experience imposter syndrome. Golly, I sure did as a new grad. There were days I would drive home and cry from the stress and overwhelming feelings of it. What we do is so important, the mistakes we make can cost another human being their life. And that can be scary… but it makes you good at your job in my opinion. I’ve never let the weight of what we do down, it keeps me constantly checking myself. Making certain every single decision I make is 100% about the patient in my care and for their best interest. The imposter syndrome will fade and one day you will feel so confident and comfortable in your position. Get on a sleep schedule. Meal prep. Have snacks that keep your energy levels up. Do self care when you need to so you are taking care of your own mental health. Especially working in pediatric oncology. You will never forget your 1st patient that passes away. They will all hurt to lose, but there are people you bond with more than others and those ones are hard. I lost one of my all-time favorite patients to cancer in September. It broke my heart, absolutely gutted me. Talk to your fellow friends in healthcare. Because they will get it, we have all been there. Gosh, I think those are all the biggies. If you have anything that you are curious about I am happy to elaborate on any of my own personal experiences for you.

So proud of you Kiara!!! Congratulations! You're going to be such a light and joy for these kids and their families! ◡̈ I've been a night shift NICU nurse for almost 15 years now. In my personal experience as well as the experience of being a preceptor for many years starting out on nights was better because it typically is a bit slower paced without all the extra staff/specialties/family around so you can spend more focused time dedicated to learning and reviewing. Its also great to get a handle on your time management which is the most important thing to learn and the hardest to teach!

You are seriously the cutest!! I have been watching your videos for the past year and love your positive happy attitude! I love that you got your dream nursing job. I am currently half way through my RN BSN program and I literally have NO IDEA what area of nursing I want to go into and it is stressing me out! lol! It seems like everyone else in my cohort knows where they want to be, but I am so picky and haven't liked any of my clinical rotation areas so far (med surg, CVU, ortho, nicu, icu). I'm hoping it all clicks at some point and I have some direction. Thank you for sharing your journey, and I can't wait to follow your peds journey!

Congratulations Kiara!!! It's been so exciting to see you go through your whole journey. I am an RN in Canada, worked on an inpatient surgical unit for 2.5 years and just switched to the OR last month. My advice for new grad you is to take advantage of the time with the preceptor, use it as time to learn and ask tons of questions!!! As someone who has orientated lots of new grads and students, know that you are definitely not expected to know everything!!!! Something else I'm just finally starting to accept - know that it is not your job to fix everyone and to know every little thing that's going to happen to your patients before it does. The human body is unpredictable, and sometimes the warning signs arent there. Sometimes, the warning signs are there, we do everything we can, and it still isn't enough. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. ❤You will be such a great nurse!

Kiara!!!! Congratulations, so excited for you!! I graduated nursing school 2 years ago and I’m a nightshift NICU nurse! I remember feeling so terrified to start on nights because I had never done it before but I promise it’s worth it if it’s in your dream specialty. Definitely stack your shifts so you work 3 nights in a row and have 4 days off to flip back to a normal schedule. Before my first nightshift I’ll try to stay up late the night before and sleep in the next day or even try to take a nap in the afternoon before going in and that always helps! Once you get through the first shift of the week your body usually adjusts for the rest of the stretch! Keep yourself hydrated and rest when you need it, nurse hangovers are so real. And I’ll be honest, the nightshift crew is typically SO fun, you’ll get super close with your coworkers and become such a strong nurse since the resources are often different at night. Put your time in and before you know it you’ll be transitioning to a dayshift position! Can’t wait to see you succeed!!

Congratulations! So proud of you, cannot wait to keep following along with your journey. I work some night shifts (not as a nurse but just in general) my best advice would be to just try and make your schedule feel as normal as possible, you still need sleep it may feel weird to sleep when everyone else is doing their day and don't feel guilty about having your schedule the way you need it, seeing friends and family will get easier once you get used to the a schedule. Good luck, you've got this.

Congratulations Kiara! My first nursing job was in paeds. I started in intensive care but it was too early in my career (I needed to consolidate my training first) so I moved to oncology and orthopaedics. I LOVED paediatric nursing. That led me to primary care nursing, then into hypertension and endocrinology nursing back in a hospital. Now I’m a nurse practitioner. My scope of practice is diabetes education and I work for myself. Night shift is fine if you can sleep when you need to. I found sleeping straight after a shift worked for me, but I know other nurses who preferred to sleep later in the day. It’ll take a while to get used to, so be good to yourself ❤

I’ve been doing physical therapy for 12 years and after working with nurses for so long, I’m now getting my BSN and start an accelerated program in July! After so many years, I’ve always loved acute care, post surgery, and ICU patients. Pediatrics is a given for me, but I always loved the more intense atmospheres. While stressful at times, I always felt like I was helping so much at people’s most vulnerable times. It is, was, and always will be rewarding to me. Yay for all our healthcare heroes!

I’m currently in my second semester of nursing school and I work in the critical care unit as a CNA and I also work as an extern on the unit. Night shift definitely takes some getting used to but it is also slower paced and you will get to learn a lot more and get used to being a nurse easier I believe. I really enjoy ccu but I am also very interested in aesthetic nursing and would love to do both as I own a salon and that is my other passion.

I was there the night they disconnected them and I remember thinking…these nurse have to have such a heart for this because this is soooo hard! So congratulations! Here’s to hoping you become the best nurse you can be and those kids need! I went into High risk Labor and Delivery and I wouldn’t have it any other way…I absolutely found my niche and it’s the most rewarding job ever. I had a patient come up to me the other day (on my OT day, a day I really didn’t want to be at work) he came up to me in the elevator and told me “you were my wife’s nurse and you gave us so much hope and now look at my baby, he survived.” The wife had delivered at 24 weeks. That made me ball like a baby but that’s why I became a nurse to be that hope and light for patients. I hope you get stories like that along the way and reinforce your purpose!

Night shift peds nurse in Portland here!!! Welcome to the peds club!! So excited for you! I absolutely love working nights, especially as a new grad. My biggest tip is to avoid extra caffeine and to stay super hydrated. Working nights is just just like being jet lagged constantly. So nap when you can and drink lots of water to help your body adjust!!

Congrats! Night shift is a lot of fun! When I worked nights, I would get home around 7:45 am and sleep until 12-1(ish) and then get up and work out, do some errands, meal prep, and then go back to sleep for a bit. My hardest part was that I taught myself to sleep in small chunks of time. But, I ended up really liking the shift! My biggest recommendation would be to be kind to yourself while you adjust to the schedule change. Don’t schedule too many things for the first few weeks while you’re making the adjustment! Also, invest in black out curtains and a sleep mask! The sleep mask was such a game changer for me! Wishing you all the best in the transition and with the new job as a whole!

Congrats Kiara! I knew this day would come, your hard work paid off! Thanks for sharing your journey. Advise: Remember everyone (including the most seasoned professionals) had to start from square one. At the end of the day, you know what you know, and it is wise to always ask for assistance, guidance, and the answers when you don’t know something. Enjoy the process and even on the rough days you are learning and developing professionally and personally! Finally, there is no need for imposter syndrome, since your colleagues know that you are a new grad and this is your first job. In most cases showing compassion to your patients and their families, contributing to your team, and alway maintaining a willingness to learn and grow will open more doors for professional opportunity and relationships. Lastly, develop a least two relationship mentorship relationship with people that genuinely care for and about you, and that will provide diverse perspectives!

Congrats Kiara 💓 I've been a night shift orthopedic surgery nurse for 1.5 years and I've loved it. I definitely wasn't excited for night shift when I started out but looking back, I'm so thankful I had those slower shifts to have the time to learn, ask questions, and become friends with my coworkers! And there are so many opportunities to switch to day shift - especially after 1 year - I'm about to switch a mon-fri pre-op position myself (I miss that daily routine life 😤). My advice would be to never be afraid to ask questions, buy black out curtains, make the most of your days off, and find a sleep routine that works for you (whether it be waking up early and napping later, or staying up late the night before to sleep in as late as possible, or just whatever works for you). I just discovered your channel a few months ago but I can tell you’re a smart girl - you're going to do just fine !!! Peds units are always the most fun, joyful units in the hospital - you're going to love it. Excited for you!! 💌♥

Congrats! You’ll be such a good peds nurse :) I started peds nights back in September and I try my best to work 2-3 shifts in a row(we get to self schedule) and then before my first shift I have a normal day but nap from 3-5 and then after my last shift I sleep for around 7 hours and have no trouble sleeping that night too because I’m so tired lol. Nights is definitely a transition but I love the shift and the people I work with! Drink lots of water and don’t overdo it on caffeine :)

So excited for you! You will be an incredible nurse ❤️ I am currently working in an outpatient oncology infusion center and have been since I graduated nursing school last year! Oncology patients are amazing and honestly getting to talk with them is the best part of my day. You will be so overwhelmed with all that there is to do and learn as a new grad but spending as much time talking with and learning from your patients is my best advice. Good luck to you on this new journey !!!

Woohoooo!! So happy for you :) I'm going through the process of applying/interviewing right now, and I got my first offer last week! Had to turn it down cause my heart just wasn't in it... this is honestly the most stressful part of nursing school so far!! Hoping to work in the NICU/PICU, but we'll see ;) Congrats again
