My mom just allowed me to stay home every few weeks when I wanted to. So that I won't have to lie, and because it's good for mental health. Only drawback is I grew up thinking rules are generally rational and made for your own good, and that lying is unjustified and should be avoided. Which I painfully learned was definitely not the case in the real world. Basically, I never learned when and how to disregard, smear or lie to authority figures, because I never had to.

One thing I appreciate about a lot of newer parents nowadays is this idea of taking "mental health days." Three times in a school year (with extensions if needed), the kid can tell their parent they're taking a mental health day, and the parent will call and excuse their absence, no questions asked. It makes a kid a lot less likely to fake being sick to get out of going to school if they feel like their mental health is cared about. Additionally, why tf don't parents ever ask *why* their kid doesn't want to go to school? People don't go out of their way to avoid things without good reason.

@@JayAshBranAudioScripts I am so sorry that you have to deal with that. I'm glad that you have at least a few strategies. And I agree with you: Mental Health IS physical health, and doctors need to do their part in screening for it and ensuring that patients get the support they need. In the U.S., we don't have a good history of this or plan for the future to care for the mental health of our citizens.

I never felt the need to lie to my mom about being sick. Sometimes I'd just ask if it was okay if I stayed home (it was rare but it happened), and after she made sure I wasn't skipping on a test or being bullied, she'd usually let me. Kids need the occasional break, too.
