This video is for those preparing for surgery to get their peritoneal catheter to start peritoneal dialysis.
In this video I tell my experience with the surgery, recovery at home, and what I would do differently.
I hope this video can help others suffering from ESRD/ESKD be better prepared for surgery then I was.
Thanks!

You were right about everything. Thank goodness I saw your video. I never used or needed my pain meds. I had swelling and bleeding after 3days. The doctor took care of it. I thought it was my fault but he reassured me it can happen. I thought I ruined my surgery. I’m on psych drugs so I don’t know what happens when I sleep and thought I ruined my surgery by rolling over. Tuesday I get flushed out. My brother helped me into the house. They sent me home right after surgery so I just passed out on the couch. I drove Thursday but was afraid to drive Friday. It’s Saturday and I took my wife to the grocery store and rested in the car. My mom made sodium free homemade chicken soup. I had pretzels with white chocolate and went back to sleep. I was really knocked out. I was hungry. I sat alone Monday night and cried knowing my stomach would be ruined. I was tempted to get out my touring bike and ride away but since this started I can only ride about 6miles not the hundred I’m used too. Anyways, I’m just going to stay positive for this next year no matter what happens.

I had to grieve for the changes in my body as well. I love swimming, and that was not an option for me. It sounds like your family has been supportive and I am glad for that. It gets easier.

My mother had peritoneal dialysis and when it came to my turn having learnt something from her I insisted on haemo and I'm pleased I did, don't be bullied into having the wrong dialysis for you, one thing the unit will never tell you is the high risk of infection, its also cheaper than haemo. After about 14 months on hospital dialysis I had a anonymous donor kidney that was 12 years ago and am doing well with normal createnine and egfr, I am blessed.

I got really sick around Nov, and started on hd, and quite frankly if it was presented as a permanent solution I would stay with that. I enjoy my techs a lot, but between the pushing of the nurses and the fact that that it can clog up and put me through surgery again and again I had to go to pd. I had that surgery and was off the pain killers by the third day, that first day or two were not fun though, I felt like I could only walk with a noticeable forward tilt to keep from stressing those abdominals. I am now a couple weeks out from pd cath surgery and will be having my last day of hd tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'm gonna like being on pd or not. Both from the standpoint of it being a more continuous thing as opposed to just three days a week, from the stand point of me having to be the one who does it... and making space in my home (& in my life) for the 60 cases of medical equipment due to arrive this week. I am not sure if pd will be a net gain or not. But I'll find out, i'm on this roller coaster ride now, and the only way is forward. I enjoyed your video. Thanks

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm glad Hemo was a good experience for you because at some point in my life I may need to start HD. I hope that PD ends up being a net gain for you! Thanks for commenting.

@@kidneykeeping I tried HD , 5 MONTHS and had flash pulmonary edema , I was in total respiratory failure for 6 minutes until the emts got me breathing again. They got there fast. I was on the dialysis chair. Since I was an acute fsil they assumed and guessed my dry weight. It was 134 and I am 5’ 7 “ they guessed without asking and put me at whopping 175 lbs I didn’t weight that w 9 pound kids at delivery. Lol that extra fluid filled my lungs and squeezed my heart. That’s rare. Because everyone knows their dry weight before starting dialysis with PD I was able to control my true weight myself. Smoother and more control. I hope you love it ….I slept and had to still sit couple hours. Got of at 9 am. Ready for the day.

Thank you for sharing ❤️ I want to let you know that you have been very helpful in my thoughts on my health. I figured most of changes I noticed were simply from getting older and you just deal with it. Now, I am thinking I need to get professional advice. You are contributing to bettering another's life and can hold that close to your heart.

In the “what would I do differently”, you talked about raising the sofa, or bringing a bed down, and getting a booster seat for the toilet. Please keep these preparations in the back of your mind for when you get a kidney transplant, because the surgery involves another deep abdominal incision with similar complications regarding the use of abdominal muscles you described after PD surgery. Thank you for making these videos. You express what going through kidney failure is like very clearly and concisely.

Asking questions is an important part, but sometimes more difficult than it normally is. In our case, we live in a Non-English speaking country and have to deal with our [at the moment] still limited knowledge of the foreign language. We got already a whiff of it when my wife was in the hospital for several days in the past .

Hi. Great content. You stated your gfr was 10 when you had the procedure. Can I ask please if you felt ill at all at that time? if so at approximately what gfr did you notice any problems? Thanks
@kidneykeeping
@kidneykeeping Жыл бұрын
I went back and looked over my "gfr journey". It think I might make a video going over how I felt at each stage. I didn't feel pain or really uncomfortable when my gfr was that low. I was very anemic but they didn't want to give me a blood transfusion because that can make it harder to keep a transplant. I was unable to work and I no longer took daily walks. My husband and I would go for drives but after 20 minutes or so even that was tiring and I would often just fall asleep. I also wasn't hungry and didn't feel nauseous. My body was slowly shutting down and I just wanted to sleep.

I had a similar issue. My muscles did not want to relax enough to completely empty my bladder and I had to go to the restroom more often with not much happening. I had to make an effort to relax and it got better in a few days. For me, it was mostly uncomfortable and I did worry. If you're in pain I would check with your doctor to make sure you don't have an UTI or something else. Hope you feel better soon!
