Uptake in School shootings in the US is the number 1 reason I homeschool, followed by bullying, peer pressure, and classroom distractions. I do have tough days in which I almost want to throw in the towel, and its usually when a child hates the task at hand (could be reading or writing or math) then proceeds to have a meltdown or flat out refuses to do it. This makes me feel angry, helpless, and hopeless. Thankfully its not something that occurs everyday, but when it does I question my decision to homeschool. Then I think of all the harm Im protecting my girls from, how much I love them, and how my selfless act of homeschooling them is completely out of love and how giving up and putting them in public school would be detrimental for SO many reasons. We also love our co-op, its big (100 students) and its a lifesaver. I hope God gives me the fortitude and ability to keep homeschooling all the way through highschool.

I secretly second guessed myself a lot in the beginning, especially because my husband was quite unsupportive. Our school-aged kids ended up going back to public school for a couple of months last year and it was a terrible experience. We pulled them out before Thanksgiving. My husband is very supportive now and we are on the same page. We do not plan to ever send them back public school... if they ever left home it would be some kind of private/charter school.

Every time I have to drive by the long line of cars in the school’s car pool pick up line (we see it on our way to my son’s occupational therapy), I think, “homeschooling is much easier than that even on the hard days” lol. I wouldn’t want to tackle that car pool pick up line EVER! 😂

Thank you so much for this. Pulling my 4th grader out of public school next week to start the homeschool adventure and have literally had all of these thoughts within the last 24-48 hrs. I guess bc now it’s becoming “real”. Glad to know I’m not the only one. Last week my 4th grader (on his own) told me about how even some of the young kindergarten kids (“not just 5th graders, mom”) curse, flip each other off and talk about “sex/gay stuff” and the teachers don’t have any real power to stop them. It was very sad to hear because it bothered him too. And we really like the school he’s at! My heart breaks for all the kids - definitely different times than we had growing up.

Loved this video so much! I wanted to add something crucial! I just recently had a few college courses where I had to observe an elementary classroom (I homeschool and have for 3 years and plan to indefinitely) but that teacher even struggled with some thoughts you mentioned here! She voiced her concern to me that with the current curriculum she was worried about testing her kids reading skills again because she just didn’t think they were learning enough or even what they really should be to be where they should be at this point academically. So all this to say that these thoughts are normal (as you stated) and public school teachers are having the same struggle and concerns!

Thank you for sharing. I felt the same as you and I had some sleepless night because of those thoughts. Most of my mom friends they believe public school is much more fun and beneficial for the kids so I struggle with my vision is right? or not. Even I know there’s no right answer…Am I doing good things for my kid? So many thoughts come and go but I talked to other homeschooling parents and I noticed public school parents don’t know real homeschooling is. We can done school work in 2 hours or less and kids can go to park, rock climbing on real rocks, homeschooling sports programs, pool and play with other friends, and they can have much more free time for themselves. I didn’t like kids are so tired to come back home from school like workers. I don’t like kids “learn” they have to follow someone and do something by order all the time. That’s why I choose. Maybe I will back to public school for my kids but not now. Now homeschooling is best choice for us.

I’m struggling with this now. My 6th grader has become very lazy with her schoolwork and my mental health is in the toilet on top of the regular stress. Not ever having time during the day to take care of myself and spending all of my time standing over my kids, facilitating every activity, cleaning up every activity, never having time to go to the gym, go to appointments myself, clean, etc is taking a serious toll on me. I also wonder if my 12 year old needs to be held accountable a little by someone other than just mom. But then I struggle with the guilt of possibly sending her back to public school. My youngest will be in kindergarten next year so there’s that decision too.

Fear of missing out will make us crazy. We have a responsibility to do our research on what is available in our area for homeschoolers. My kids are good at sports, and I thought I was preventing them from the opportunity because they aren't in public school but my oldest have been and knows she doesn't want to go back. I remember the tears, frustration, and anger with public school. Co-op has made a real difference in implementing "school" activities, so we are good. Before co-op local homeschool groups met daily.

This is our 4th year and my children have never been to daycare or to public school. At least once a week I contemplate putting them in public school but it is almost always because of the pressure. Knowing that I alone am in charge of their education is overwhelming. My biggest fears are that I am not the smartest person and finances. I am afraid they will not get certain experiences because I can not afford it. We are not a family that can take vacations and do all these extra stuff. We also live in an apartment. It is hard seeing most homeschool mamas living in the country with lots of property to explore and do things. I do not EVER want to send my kids to public school but I definetly daydream about what it would be like. The grass isn’t always greener thats for sure!! It is hard to be content and fully happy with how I homeschool because I always fear I am doing something wrong. This is where faith in the Lord gets me through.

I appreciate this video! I dont think I ever anticipated to feel the turmoil I currently feel regarding homeschool. I have three children and we are four years in on the journey, never public schooled. Long story short, one of my children has an incredible need for social interaction and is what you would describe as extroverted. I wouldnt consider myself introverted per say, but my social needs are probably 1/6 of my child's. After four years of co ops, sports teams, field trips, hiking/nature groups, playground groups and having to become friendly with all of their friend's parents... I am so burnt out, and this sudden realization has left me a bit whiplashed. I was just trying to rise to the occaison of being in charge of it all, I didnt realize how completely unsustainable our mode of operation was becoming. Currently re imagining what school will look like for us since PS is not an option for our family in this state. Ive laid it at the Lord's feet and I have faith God will guide me with his peace, first and foremost. But i think these conversations are so important to have! With your spouse, children, friends! Sometimes acknowledging things don't feel right is the exact thing you need to open the door to what does ❤ Take care and God bless the decision making process for you and your family 🙏

Gosh this video is so refreshing. Every single thought you said has gone thru my mind. It’s our first year, 2 months in and I’m struggling to find balance. I work from home and there are days I’m so busy we just can’t do school, my 3rd grade daughter requires so much hand on attention from me that’s is so hard to do it all. I’m powering thru and I know we are just going to need to find our flow but the amount t of guilt I have that I’m not doing enough is always on the forefront. Socially, there aren’t enough programs out there and between my work schedule it’s hard to commit since it really all falls on me to navigate jt all. I definitely go back and forth with how I feel. All we want is to give our children the best.

I will say the first year is the hardest or at least it was for me. I think coming out of public school and that being ll my husband and I ever knew with ourselves and 6 of our seven children. COVID confirmed what we were already feeling and opened our eyes to how it could be at home and gave us the confidence to go for it, but I struggled with self doubt big time that first year. I would read the standards and be so overwhelmed and doubt would set it. Researching and choosing curriculum was a bear in itself. But then, I allowed myself to let go and remember why we chose homeschool and one of those reason was so we could do school our way. I think once you give yourself grace it allows you the freedom to tailor your child education to them. Hang in there momma you’ve got this. You know them better than anyone.

In Washington homeschool kids are eligible to try out for and participate in sports in the district where they live. This may be the case in your area. Also check into recreational leagues for whatever sport your kiddo is interested in. In the current environment I think elementary age students would benefit from having a parent on campus. 50 years ago my mom felt that the only way to make sure my school experience was optimal was for her to be there. She was never in my class, but she volunteered in the other classrooms or with the school nurse. You definitely have to be involved. For parents who have the time and education to home school it's a great option, but it's also good for kids to get out and meet the rest of the community. And a lot of parents don't have that option. It's hard on public schools and parents who have no other option to lose a lot of kids to home school. Ultimately, it would be great if communities could be more invested in their schools. Not just school board members, but volunteering on campuses, PTA and showing up to school board meetings to really look at the curriculum and be well informed. In the end all the kids in the community are the community's responsibility. It's great that you took the time to really think through the pros and cons of your situation.

Last year our family moved to the best school district in our area and everyone asked if we would send our kids to public schools now. I considered it for a bit, especially since at the time I was severely sick with baby #3 and couldn't do much at all. Then I watched a few schoolboard meetings (they post them on YT) and I just felt sick to my stomach seeing everything going on and the things that were discussed were honestly shocking to me. We pulled our oldest out almost 4 years ago when she was in PreK because in the short 4-5 months she was there, multiple things happened that I didn't approve of how they were handled, or rather not handled. I don't see public schools in our lives anywhere in the near future. We considered private school but honestly the issues are creeping up there as well. Our biggest issue is definitely socialization. We've tried a few different things but everywhere il take them, no interacting is actually happening, they just get whatever activity done that they go for and that's it. (Art Club, Science Club, Music Class, Girl Scouts, Church) I'm sure it doesn't help that my oldest is extremely shy, but she wants friends so badly. I'm just at a loss of how to help with this. 😔 You made lots of very good points. This is a great video for people who are doubting or even just curious about life with public schools. I myself have been imagining all the things I could get done if my girls were in school all day 😂 but then we have random amazing moments through the day and I can't imagine not seeing them all day every day.

Yes, private schools are no better for sure! Mostly because they have money hungry owners who do not care one bit about the students. Only lining their pockets. All three of our kids went to a public school. One now homeschools, one I am about to pull out to homeschool, and the other thrives on the battles proving liberal teachers wrong because he knows true history very well. I am a tutor for private schools. Both public and private are terrible.

My oldest is getting ready to turn 17 and when she was in kindergarten she did K12 online which is a public school online then came her 1st grade year and she wanted to do public school in person, I pulled her out of school in August and now she is getting her GED because in my state you can not graduate from homeschool. My middle child went to public school until age 12 then she was homeschooled for a whole school year then she decided to go live with her dad and step mother and they put her back into public school again (she's now 14). My youngest is going on 2 and my husband and I have decided to homeschool him so we are going to homeschool him from the beginning of his education and in hopes to keep homeschooling him until he is in 12th grade and able to take the GED test (unless things change and I hope they do in my state homeschoolers can not graduate from homeschool they have to get their GED or go to the state captiol and take a test to graduate) so that's we are planning on for the future of my husband and my sons education and a little history of all 3 of my kids education

What are your plans when your children are homeschooled and they're studying high school level chemistry 1&2, organic & inorganic chemistry, algebra, biology ,physics, geometry and calculus and they and including you don't understand some of the subjects? How will they experience the full extend of Chemistry and/or Biology if your children are not exposed to a lab? Would you consider putting your children in a public school (high school level) when they become older and the science and math classes are more extensive and difficult? By the way, I have nothing against homeschooling or public school because I understand each have their pro's and con's.

There are options for homeschool science classes with lab exposures as well as homeschool kids can take college level courses while in homeschool for dual credit. Homeschoolers have plenty of resources available to assist in teaching subjects the parents may not be “experts in” most teachers only have a bachelor’s degree and aren’t experts in the subjects they teach. They use curriculum and resources just like homeschool parents do.

There are many contributing factors. We do have a severe teacher shortage and these are a few reasons why. Quality canidates can make more money working in other fields, the school systems incentive the worse behavior in children, lack of standards over time lead to a cycle of poor instruction and bad working conditions and the weakest people are pulled in to fill empty positions. Just because students are in school doesn’t mean they are learning or have teachers who adhere to high standards. Lack of care in some cases, lack of knowledge in most.

In my area there are scholarship options that will pay for the private school costs. You may have the same option in your area.

Public schools are worse than ever!! Now is NOT the time. Why are you letting your kids decide this? Don’t let them decide this. Not a good idea at all. Public school teacher for 27 years here and left last year because it is traumatic every single day. Trying to make it easy on yourself. Man, please don’t do this. You are doing it for ALL the wrong reasons.

Not sure if this is meant to be negative, but to clarify homeschooling does not mean your kids are locked in the house all day 😆

I agree but if these folks live in a bad neighborhood my kids would be in a private school.

@katemiller7874 you are entitled to your opinion. Homeschooling works for many families. Schools are not what they used to be 30 years ago.
