In this video we look back at the cases of teenagers Damone and Robert as they were spending their first years inside a maximum-security adult prison. Both Damone and Robert were in the prison's Segregation unit, where they were locked down 23 hours a day, 7 days a week. As prison guards leashed the boys with a leather strap and walked them to a holding cell, we interviewed the boys through the cell cuffport and asked how they were surviving isolation, what landed them in prison in the first place, their family history, and ultimately, what they hoped for their futures. We then see updates on the boys 13 years later, and find out if the hopes and dreams they told us about as teenagers turned into reality once they were adults.

There’s always someone badder than you. He talks like he isn’t a bully and how he wanted to go to adult block but in reality he’s going to learn the hard way that everyone has to mind someone.

In this case, I think you are right, but I have heard that kind of thing from people who would benefit a lot if they had counselling or classes available to them.

Why does he think he needs $100 shoes? Someone needs to explain to him he doesn’t need expensive shoes. He needs to get his life together.

It is very striking how they are given almost no rehabilitation in kids' prisons. Adults have more available. It never would have occurred to me that they don't make these kids go to school or a GED program, during the day or only get individual counselling in dire situations, I saw that from another of your Docs.

@addie_is_me - Thank you for commenting, and thank you for watching our docs. We should clarify that these 2 boys are in an adult prison because they were waived from the juvenile court system to the adult system. Unlike the juvenile facilities where more programs and educational services are offered, the adult system offers fewer opportunities. In this particular prison, kids under the age of 18 were all housed in a special cellblock called YIA (Youth Incarcerated as Adults). In that cellblock, the kids who were getting their GEDs did have school during the day, but Damone and Robert were no longer in that unit because they were sent to segregation after they got in fights on the cellblock. In Seg, there are zero opportunities to do anything but sit in a cell 23 hours a day, 7 days a week. We're not sure how anyone really survives it all. We appreciate you watching their story and taking the time to comment. We hope we helped explain things a little bit better.

I can tell you as someone who served 10 years in Illinois DOC. They dont want to rehabilitate you and make no attempt to. Prisons are a business and they want to keep people locked up. At the time the system got 35k a year per inmate. They want people to stay in or reoffend so they come back. Inmates are nothing but cattle for profit. I made it cause i mentally choose to not because the system did anything to help me.

These kids should pay for what they did but isolating for a long time just causes more issues that make it harder for them to be successful on the outside.
@CalamariProductions

@kimharris7429 - yes, segregation/isolation only compounds the issues, especially when someone is in segregation for a long time. It's counterproductive, as you say.

50 & 45 years, very sad but I didn’t see a bright future for either of these kids when I first saw their videos. They didn’t even bother pretending to have learned a lesson and both struggled a lot imagining themselves doing something positive as adults. I doubt they ever saw another life as a true possibility

@hp2474 - Sadly, both boys had such chaos in their lives from early on that you're right -- envisioning a life with hope and opportunity seemed to be beyond their imagination or expectation. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with envisioning a better life for yourself, I would hope we all do. Sometimes speaking positivity does come into existence but it takes action too. From the beginning hearing their stories was clear they would face big hurdles. The boy smiled as he spoke about his family members in prison like he was proud 😢 instead of doing better for himself. So sad

@cristyluv1205 - Damone was released from prison following our first interview with him, but sadly was re-arrested in 2018 and convicted of attempted murder. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison. His projected release date is 2063.

The second guy throws a chair at someone and cuts the teacher’s wrist but says he isn’t violent? Also he said he went in juvie at 9 and LIKED it! He committed a crime to see his brother rather than going to visitation or calling him. There is something seriously wrong with this guy. He isn’t safe.

We had hoped that once they were out they would find some glimmer of hope and opportunity somewhere. Re-entry back into a community is hard enough--doing so after spending so much time in isolation and going back to the same environment that got them in trouble in the first place even more so.

@@CalamariProductions What the hell is the point of the juvenile system??Just to warehouse them until they are old enough to join the adults?? Find some of these kids to report on who became lawyers or teachers, or something. You owe us that much, these are very sad! Lol

My son was good I until he got with this girl at 17 and things started to happen ! He wanted to impress her . He was working at grocery store but that girl wanted him to pay for her nails , hair , eat out all the time! Since 2018 (18 years), he is been in jail about 7 times ! Chargers : stealing , resisting arrest , fight (bought a knife from someone who was bothering his girlfriend) and selling drugs. I bailed him out when he fist got arrested. Second my sister in law did bail him out. The seventh time , early 2021 and I spent $6,000 for him to to get out! Probations after probations but he never followed through ! He is now in prison (25 years old) for selling fentanyl. I am not going to visit him or send money for him! I bought him TV while in prison , sent clothes for him ( prison in Canada allow inmates to wear street clothes); I send money for his birthday and Christmas and that’s about it ! I am not going to be that mom who enables his kids for bad behaviour! Good thing he got himself a nice girlfriend before he went to prison . I have watched this documentary when it came out, thanks for the update .

@lovesallanimals9948 - Interestingly, Miles and Colt were in the same Youth Unit cellblock as Damone and Robert when they were young teens (before Damone and Robert were sent to Segregation). We see many different types of kids when we film inside, and it's always great to see kids like Miles and Colt do so well once they're released. It's a really difficult road, both during and after life inside, and we always hope for the best. Thank you for watching their stories.
